SGU is going to Anza Borrego! Anybody interested in rolling with us?

I will be in Borrego Springs Thursday afternoon. Driving home Sunday. This trip will be mostly desert trail so we can stretch our legs and work our suspension. Bruce and Roy recently installed long travel front suspension and I have revalved all my bypasses. You don't need a fully built truck though, we stay together as a group, wait for everybody at turns, and help each other with breaks and stucks. This will be a great opportunity for you to see a large portion of the park in one weekend. You will need AT or mud tires, full size spare tire and tools to change it, VHF comms, and backcountry camping gear as we'll be doing dispersed camping. You will also need to bring extra fuel, at least 250 miles off road range. I get about 7 mpg off road so I am bringing 10 ga extra fuel. Bring extra water, 1 ga per person per day. You will also need to bring firewood, 2 to 4 bundles per truck.

We like to meet new people so don't be shy! If you would like to go, post here and pm me your email address and phone number.

Beer drinking and general shenanigans will be encouraged.

    Role Call:

I have the following trucks confirmed so far:

@osidepunker , Alex solo. 4wd Tundra. Arriving Thu 2pm, leaving Sunday morning
@roypark , Roy. 4wd Tundra. Arriving Fri morning. Leaving Sat afternoon
@papasmurf , Bruce. 4wd Tundra. Arriving Thu 1830hrs. Leaving Sun morning
@jc153 , John. 4wd Tundra. Arriving Thu 1830hrs. Leaving Sun morning
    @hoagie , 4wd FJ, arriving Thu 0000hrs, leaving mid-day Sat
@djkaosone, Dave, Eurobox, arriving Fri around 4-5pm
@noSKills858 , Tacoma, Sat day run 9-10am at Fish Creek

    Tentative:

@zackbremer , Zack, 4wd Tundra, arriving Thu eve, leaving Sun
mrturner, 4wd Tacoma, possibly arriving with Hoagie

    Route/Itinerary:

    Final routes TBD

Ok so the loose plan is to camp Thu night somewhere north of Clark Dry Lake bed. I’ll be in the area Thu afternoon. Fri morning we’ll make our way east, through the dirt, to Salton Sea and fuel up. Then we’ll do dirt south through Ocotillo Wells. We will cross hwy 78 and blaze a trail south to the RR trax by Split Mtn. Then we will cut west and camp in Fish Creek Fri night. Sat we will head east along the RR trax and run to Superstition Mtn. I’ve never been there so we will play it loose. Then we will head south to Plaster City. We will fuel up at the chevron in Ocotillo, then decide on a camp. Depending on time of day, we can head through Valacito wash and find a camp there, or continue up to Blair Valley. We could also backtrack and camp by Superstition. Sun we can mess around in the morning then head home. If anybody has suggestion on routes, or places they want to see/do, let me know. I am flexible. I designed this route so we could bomb some trails and fully test our new suspension setups over long distances.

You will need to have some good fuel range for this trip. Friday’s run will be around 125 – 175 miles between fuel stops, but it will be lots of super soft sand and high speed. I am expecting 5 – 7 mpg on my truck so I am cutting it super close with 35 gallons total fuel.

    Meal Planning:

Thu dinner: Jilbertos in Borregos Springs
    Fri breakfast: JC
    Fri dinner: Roy, Korean BBQ
    Sat breakfast: Hoagie
    Sat dinner: Bruce
    Sun Breakfast: Alex, breakfast burritos

Would definitely have to plan it out. I'm originally from Nevada and have to plan months out in advanced to go home. Whenever I am out that way again I will have to hit y'all up!

I love Borrego. So much cool stuff out there to see and it varies so much from the north end to the south end of the park. Fun times at The Squeeze...

The FJs had about an inch of clearance on either side getting through there. Once you get through it, there are some super fun sections including one of the steepest sections I've ever driven down.

If you don't have it, I highly recommend picking up this map. There are also interesting tidbits in this book.

One of my favorite routes is to take the S2 to Canyon Sin Nombre and head north. Follow the wash out to Del Diablo Dropoff which drops you down into Fish Creek Wash. You can take that out through Split Mountain which will take you by the Wind Caves. Super cool. Well worth the stop and hike. You'll wrap around the Fish Creek Mountains along side the gypsum railroad. At the second trestle, you head south towards the Carrizo Badlands. Take Painted Gorge Road up to the top of Carrizo Mountain. Killer views going east. Come down the mountain, head back out Painted Gorge and you'll wind up just west of Plaster City on S80. You can take that back to S2 or out to I8.

I'll dig out some pics but here's an article I wrote for American Adventurist. Tons of pics.

It seems like there's not as many guys on here that get as serious about off-roading as the TT transplants. I think it's freakin awesome how outfitted all you guys' rigs are!

Updated first post with a loose route/itinerary. You will need to have some good fuel range for this trip. Friday’s run will be around 125 – 175 miles between fuel stops, but it will be lots of super soft sand and high speed. I am expecting 5 – 7 mpg on my truck so I am cutting it super close with 35 gallons total fuel.

Damn Alex, looks like an action packed trip. I'm jealous and wanna go fast. One of my goals is to ride in something that can handle the fast stuff at 70 mph in a full sized.

I have been watching videos on the new Honda CR450F...my need for air time and speed is hard to resist.

My wife is going to shoot me.

    Good times!!

    Hah totally relatable.

Looks like a great weekend. Love the pic of the LR4 slammed in the desert. Made me chuckle. Those mud flats can be wonderful traps.

haha! Just add some Foxs to the jeep and turn it into an ultra4 rig and then you can do both

Yeah we got lucky. It happened 4 miles from asphalt. We decided to just camp in the wash because it was pretty nice and try to troubleshoot while drinking beer and making fajitas. We ended up drinking lots of margaritas and eating lots of fajitas and not fixing the landy :drunk:

Dave had a bumpy ride home. He said it literally felt like driving a dumped civic

Excuse me for asking whats probably a dumb question, but I'm curious since I've been reading on suspension. Are those limit straps attached to the rear axle in the pic?

Cool pics Alex. Looks like that high center pic is Superstition. I have been high centered on that same ridgeline in a Rhino in the middle of the night with minimal lights. Luckily we had another car following and got back to camp in one piece. Hope you all enjoyed your time. You all have some nice looking trucks......

Yeah man! My rear is strapped at 17" sprung travel

Thanks homie! Yep thats superstition. We had lunch by one of the antenna peaks. That was actually my first time there. I have driven past it plenty of times, but never directly to it. My truck doesn't do well in the sand lol Its a fat pig and I don't have lockers yet. But that was a tough ridge. Even when I took it at an angle I had to get speed to get over
