It wouldn't pull the D9 Cat like they thought it would although they tried for 5K?

My dealer had 3 very low milage trade ins on the lot when I was there recently and when I asked why, they were double cabs. The people that bought them realized too late that the back seat was way too small, sucked it up and traded them on the crew max.

Given some of the travel trailers/campers some people try to pull behind a half ton truck, you may not be too far off the mark. Stupidity is rampant. "Der. Truck do trucky truck stuffs. Der"... two years later when said idiot breaks their truck "stupid POS truck no do trucky truck stuff no more. Sumbitches lied me into spendin' dollars more than I had!"

So Toyota put in a new torque converter, transmission and now a new engine.
It sucks that it is all taking so long but it does sound like they are actually serious about fixing the truck.

If you want out I'd go the lawyer route.

I didn’t spend the money to just swap out stuff.
That’s even worse. You think the people driving a demo gave a crap about the break in? No throttle smashing, hard braking, letting trans warm up?

Sorry you ended up with one of the few hundred ‘22s and early ‘23s with the secret engine assembly issue/failure. Very upsetting I’m sure. Good news is that was corrected and the other 250K G3s aren’t having that issue. At less than 1/4 of 1% failure rate it’s still a very low number. I don’t have comparison figures for the big3 but I believe it’s compatible or lower.

Because Toyo isn’t speaking about it no one has official data but I and others have found no reported bearing failures on anything later than early 23’s. ((Will just take one to blow that all to hell)) There are more joining the 100K mile plus club now without issue and that’s reassuring. (( and some of them are driven hard!!))

@ryanwgregg - can you share the latest known production date to suffer a bearing failure?

Tundras.com has a subforum for 2.5 gen - which means it's on the internet, so that automatically makes it so.

So far latest build date with bearing failure is about April 2023.
However, higher milage where failure was reported so far is about 65k miles, most of failures around 15-30k miles.

Assuming on average people drive 15k per year, we won't know if the engine bearing failures stopped or not until about April 2024 (or much sooner)

Okay maybe I missed something obvious, but wouldn't a truck that new and with only 5K on the clock still have warranty? Having a major repair under warranty is one thing. Having a major repair and footing the entire bill is another enchilada.

I have 10k miles on my 23 at this point and have had zero issues yet. You probably either get a bad one or a good one. Anyway the engines are assembled in a different plant, I am sure so the quality is probably a result of that factory and nothing specific to the way the truck is assembled or made in San Antonio.

Wow. I am very sorry about your misfortune. I sincerely hope this gets resolved to your satisfaction. I can certainly understand your frustration. In regards to the title of your post, what would be a good choice for an alternative purchase? A previous generation Tundra I guess would be good if you could find a low mile well cared for unit. Other than that, an F-150 with an ecoboom? A GM or Chrysler Product?......:monocle:

Just added a cat protection shield.
Vehicle is still covered under 3 year 36,000 mile warranty. Yea it sucks it happened. Should not have to pay anything for repairs. See if they would give an extended warranty as a good will gesture. Does not hurt to ask. Otherwise as long as it is still under manufacturer warranty you can purchase an extended warranty. If they will not give you one the least they could do is give you a discount on it.
    Sorry about all the hassles.

I'm pretty sure very few new trucks/cars are going to be properly broken in when you buy them. Test drives and a-hole dealership employees are abusing new cars before their break-in all the time. When I bought a new RX450H, the salesman told me to floor it during the test drive, so I can feel the power. I was thinking, how many other people have floored this car I'm about to buy. Other few test drives I've been on, the salesman has told me to floor it, so I can feel the power. They don't care about it being broken in. Good luck finding a car fresh from delivery before it's been abused too.

Sorry. Not buying it. Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren, and other high end performance cars, yes they do. Some of those engines are run at high power on a bench before being installed in the chassis. Mass produced assembly line vehicles are given a quick operational test and leak check at the end of the line, driven off, and parked for shipping. They don’t have the time. Slower lines like Corvettes and Land Rovers at least get a short run around a test track.
