What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

I happen to ride bikes (mountain, road) also, so I have quite an assortment of tools. It just so happens Park Tools' cone wrench set works perfectly also. I have other cone wrenches, but my Park cone wrenches absolutely haven't spread even a fraction of a millimeter.

I mean, I realize it may not be in everyone's budget to buy the whole set, and sometimes on fleaBay you can find the same set for $20 or a few bucks less. Hell, I had a spare set I'd sent to an acquaintance up in CT after his shop burned down, I'd never do that if it was a $100 set.

I'm going downstairs to pull the links now. I installed them per the instructions, and they're just loose as shit now, and making hella noise. I guess I compressed the bushings too much and probably need a new bushing set. But I tightened to where they "should be", so I dunno how much their previous owner wrenched down on them or if he RTFM during install.

 

Ok, I'm link-less. Below is that Park cone wrench with Mountain flex-ratchet to install/remove. Thankfully no lifting/shifting required to install/remove with truck on-ground.

Time to go on a short test drive. If clunks are gone, swaybar is coming out. I suspect it should ride fine w/o the bar given those 700lb springs in the Toytech c/os. And this reminds me, I need to address my bumpstop situation...

And I'm linkless... and man the swaybar bushings are hard as a f'n rock. I should probably order new ones. I don't want poly, gimme that rubber.

Welp, that's one less clunk sound, and it just exposed another issue.

My OEM hangers/shackles are clunking too, where they meet the spring. Awesome. I don't think there's anything to lube back there, so I'm curious what the hell is up with this.

 

Good info for anyone who needs it in the future: If you have the SuspensionMaxx links for our '00-'06 tundras + 07 Sequoia (stock 6" links or 7" extended links), the bushing kit isn't listed on their website (yet). The kit you need is p/n SMX-LRKT. It runs $19.99 and they're quick to ship out. I spoke with Brook over the phone, totally awesome to deal with. This is why I like buying from smaller companies, US made stuff. Good luck getting the kind of quick info and service I did today on scAmazon.

The difference between our kit and the SMX-LRK1 at their website: The lowest bushing on our Tundras/Seqs is smaller than on the other kits.

 

I just got new hangers when we did my leafs. If you have a hitch it'll need to come off to get the hanger bolts out. Mine did anyways.

 

Yup, this specific clunk would've started when I installed the new lifted ATS HD leaf springs. Had to pull the spring+hanger combo, then move the hanger over. That's the joint that's clunking: At the hanger/leaf joint. Weird I didn't notice this at first, I might've just attributed it to 'settling'. I play my music loud, though, and you know it's got clout to it. Might've missed it in all that noise.

I'm going to back off the hanger bolt after I pull my swaybar to see if the clunk reduces or goes away. I torqued to spec (125lbft) but who knows.

Also ordered new swaybar bushings from Toyota Parts to pickup local. Hoping to get the swaybar and links back in again this weekend. If not, the only days I'm working the next 2 weeks are on Mondays so I got time before t-day. Gotta get it done before I go back home to nola for a few days at EOM, no wrenchy wrenchy time. I've also gotta get these damn subs installed.

 

The wiring gets tucked up above the gas/brake pedal and through the firewall into the engine bay

 

What model subs did you get and, where are you putting them. I was going to put one under the back seat but there's not a lot of room under there.

 

Kicker CompRT 43CWRT81, a pair of them, both are DVC 1ohm, 300W RMS/ea, shallow mount. I wanted a few wiring options, either stereo @ 2ohm/ch, easy mono @4ohm, or mono @1ohm if I switch up to a monoblock amp later (currently have a JL HD900/5 waiting in the wings).

Current plan is to run mono @ 4ohm... will see how the HD9005 handles and go from there...

JL's documentation shows the mono channel on the 900/5 will pump 500w RMS regardless the load, which sounds strange to me, but I figure if that's truth, may as well push a lighter load to it for heat reduction purposes, since it's driving everything. This was the most logical fit for my specific setup.

Ok, so this is interesting.

Sound is actually not coming from the shackle/hanger. It's coming from the driver's side leaf pack. The bottom two leafs are making contact and when they shift apart ... "klunk" ... then when they shift back ... "klunk".

Have video. May upload later. Tried shooting some lube in there with zero effect.

 

Thank you for the very thorough answer. That set up should provide some decent thump. My set up is a bit more modest. I ended up getting the MB Quart RA1-710.5 - 5-channel amp with 50wx4@4ohm and 350x1@1ohm for the sub. I will just be doing one sub. 3" mount depth sounds more doable than what I.saw initially. I was hoping to do a box under the back seat but at 5" no. Thanks for the info. Bob

Haha thanks me too, yeah this is my 4th first gen, but the first access cab I've had. Picked it up locally a couple months ago and liking the size a lot. The second gen with 35's was just too big for dailying here.

There may be, but this is just the overcrowded parking lot at our office (we own the building) and that is just my regular old parking space.

Picked up new swaybar bushings.

but I gotta say, I hardly notice the swaybar isn’t there. Maybe it’s just the heavier springs with the Toytec c/o but even hitting circular on/offramps at 35mph had limited roll. I’m thinking I may keep the bar off for a few weeks just to give it a go.

also realized the removable slider cab-side window on the camper is squeaking like a MF so I took it out. Almost like there’s sand in the center window track that needs to be blown out.

I think my replacement bushing kit for the SuspensionMAXX extended links is nearby, I can hear UPS coming thru the hood. Still need to run the sway bar clamp hardware thru some Krud Kutter from it being rusted due to HVAC drain seepage.

Mines been in for several years. I did cut the mounting screws down to size… not sure if that somehow makes it sturdier

Sad news everyone: The unfortunate time is coming close, I have to sell my Tundra. I'm starting a new position Jan 1 that requires me to have an American made vehicle less than 5 years old. The best gen must move on to a new owner... (insert Retreat trumpet music here as the Tundra flag lowers)

For now, I'm going to drive the Tundra until upper management tells me otherwise. But when that day comes it will be listed on this forum first.

 

Is that even legal? And technically, FWIW, the Tundra is "made" in Alabama. It's also one of the unusual vehicles known to go 1mil miles with regular maintenance. Mine was "made" in PA or IL, I forget which.
