Increased tire noise over time - any recommendations?

Morning tire fans,

Long story short... my 295/70/18 Cooper SST Pros have gotten insanely loud over the last 5k miles. I can feel the lugs when driving which is vibrating interior pieces, and the hum is driving my family crazy. It doesn't bother me much... but as the family car, I need to fix it.

The SST Pros were great when they were new, but at half tread life, they are too loud. I also felt my last tires, Nitto Ridge Grappers, got pretty loud over time, well before their useful life was over.

Are there any all terrain tires that come to mind that mind their manners longer than others?

I've heard good things about cooper AT3 XLTs being quite and mild mannered.
I just got a set of Toyo AT3 that I'll be putting on next week due to finding a good deal.
I DON'T RECOMMEND wrangler duratracs, mine are annoyingly loud and my kinfolk had the same issue with duratracs on a Silverado that become too loud

 

That's common with most AT tires. Keeping up with rotations help some.

 

Any come to mind that are better than others? I'm honestly not sure why I ever got the SST Pros. Of course they were going to get loud...

 

I think it's common with the Load E tire compound. I just let the exhaust and stereo drown it out lol. My last 3 sets have been Ridge Grapplers.

 

How often do you rotate?

 

Every 10k on these tires. The basic front to back.

 

I have Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT on my Tundra and they are quiet. My wife had Wrangler Duratrac on her TrailBoss and those get loud if you don't rotate often, ultimately she didn't like them so we went to Falken Wildpeak AT3w and she likes those much better, not quite as quiet as the Discoverer AT3 XLT but close. I'm interested to see how the Wildpeaks do this winter as I may switch to those for my next set.

 

I think Nitto site says 7500 unless otherwise annotated.

 

I do mine at every oil change, every 5k, fronts straight to rear and cross the rears to front.

 

I have had the Yokohama X-AT's, Toyo AT3's, and Falken Wildpeak AT3W's. If you want a quiet AT my recommendation is the Toyo AT3.

 

That might be part of the issue. I run Duratracs, which are notoriously noisy tires, but I rotate them every 5k (at max), and my last set was quiet (yes, seriously) for almost 50k miles with no chunking.

Speaking of rotations, the generally recommended pattern for RWD/part time 4WD vehicles is a rearward cross:
Rears go straight to front on the same side.
Fronts cross to the opposite rear.

 

hmm, seemed like the general consensus when I was comparing the Toyo AT3 to Wildpeak AT3w was the Toyo was louder, that's why we went with the Wildpeak on my wife's TrailBoss. Did you ever test both in snow? If so, which do you feel performed better?

 

I am curious about this also. I am looking closely at both of these. The Toyos are lighter per tire, which is a plus.

 

I can't argue here. The rotations were done at a Discount Tire, but I am positive they just went back to front. The wear on my tires is pretty ugly...

 

now that you mention it, I looked at my notes from my last tire rotation and the rears forward and fronts crossed to rear is how I did it as well. I never remember and have to look at my notes lol

 

Ha! I hear you. Seems like it took forever for me to not have to look it up.

I finally realized my truck spends most of its time in REAR wheel drive, so I do a REARward cross. Simple mnemonic device.

My General Grabbers A/TX have about 20k miles and about half of the thread left. They are more noisy than when they were new, but not anywhere obnoxiously noisy like KO2 were on my wagon. Wagon was killing me on paved roads.

Also my truck's frame is coated with Noxudol 1600UM, it's an asphalt-like stuff that doubles as road noise cancelling. I have no problems going 75-80 MPH and listening to audio books or talking to the kids in back at all. Wife's new V8 Sequoia on stock Michelin LTX2 is not much quieter, maybe the engine sound is less pronounced. It has got its frame sprayed, too.

Rotating wheels FL<>RR, FR<>RL at every oil change at 5k intervals.

 

I'll look when I get home, but the manual shows a rotation diagram. I can't remember is it shows crossing the fronts when you move them to the rear.

 

You bought mud tires and they're loud on pavement?

 

Normal, however rotate every 5k miles and it will be reduced. Some brands and tires are worse than others but once tread wears down and the rubber ages and hardens some they make more noise.

 

Loud was ok. Louder, I've been told, is not ok.

 

I drove both the Wildpeak's and the AT3's on some pretty crummy roads in Wyoming and Idaho. They were both fantastic for me. In my mind, the AT3's were a tiny bit better.

The Yokohama X-AT's leave a bit to be desired in the wet and snow.

 

There is the Michelin LTX A/T 2. They are pretty darn solid tires and they are quite beginning to end.
They don't have the look and they are probably not as capable off road. But if you spend most of your time on the road????

 

You make complete sense. Unfortunately I am an idiot and can't go all the way backwards from the Cooper SST Pro to a pure street tire. I do lug dirtbikes around from time to time and prefer the look and function of an AT. The MTs are definitely overkill.

 

Toyo AT3 seems to be a pretty nice tire. I am starting to lean towards it. My prior tires were Ridge Grapplers which were great at first, but got very loud half way through.
