2022 Tundra vs 2022 F-150 opinion?

I probably will never pull the trigger on a bigger truck unless we significantly upsize the boat. Max F-150 payload is 3,325 (single cab 8', small engine, 2wd etc) and using the same parts as my truck, so I figure I have a pretty large margin of error built in.

 

Isn't that for a unicorn F150? A more basic truck with the Heavy Duty Payload Package?

no flaming man, but I doubt that, Ford (or anyone really), isn't know to put a large margin of error in the payload calcs, its quite the opposite, they got caught taking off parts, etc. If there was more payload rating to be had, they would have put in in there

 

take it easy man, I wasnt slamming the 2nd gen, I was just having a bit of fun, and I agree, slightly overload is fine, I did it a time or to with my older tundras

and yes, this one is only 200-250 lbs more, but in reality for my specific situation , I also had 320 lbs of sand in the back to make it ride even half way decent on these SHIT ASS northern IL roads.

so its like I gained 500 lbs plus now with no sand needed, HA

 

What I mean is, I don't expect my frame to buckle if I put 2000 of red oak in the bed.

It’s a trade off with the speciality color. Black > tan head liner but solar octane > terra

 

Ya, I agree with that, be cheaper to swap the head liner and pieces than to repaint the entire truck as well

I do think that occasionally more than slight overload on any of these trucks is fine. The guys who put a million miles on their trucks at 2x the rated payload capacity showed us that these aren’t hard and fast rules that will ruin your truck when exceeded.

There are 2nd gens at 9k lbs with no one in them on this forum. And that’s without a boxed rear frame. Trucks go (and stop) just fine.

I’ve only read of a couple of failed axle bearings…one guy put a huge hay bale in his bed and then hooked up to a large flatbed trailer with 3 or 4 more giant hay bales. He used his truck like that for who knows how long before the bearings went out. Fun way to spend money I guess

 

Ya wonder how much weight my auto load leveling would auto level, lol.

I loved that while towing and hauling, I wonder if they have it set to a max, like anymore than 1500 it won't do it or something.

 

I just came out of a 2016 ram ecodiesel. Crew cab, 6.5’ bed w/ram boxes. 948lb payload. I shit you not. My 23 Limited crew with 6.5’ bed says 1405 on the door, but with full tank and otherwise empty the delta between gvwr and actual scale weight was 1505. Good enough for now.

I have no idea. Is that an air system? I don’t have any experience with that. The hydraulic system on my LX is nuts. There are guys on the 200 series forum pulling campers that put their rigs 1k+ lbs over their rear axle limit. The AHC system levels them out just fine.

Better accelerate that maintenance schedule tho

 

Yeah, my son had (just sold) a GX and from what he was telling me about that system, its pretty advanced

I kinda wonder if we will see them go DOHC like the corvette z06 motor. I feel like fords approach to cylinder deactivation in the 5.0 Coyote is ironically simpler and I really have not heard of any issues with it yet.

 

My buddy has a 6.2 in his AT4 and I wasn’t impressed with it. Felt like it had more lag than my truck which doesn’t make sense.

 

I am thinking the 6.2 will be gone. Everybody likely planning for continual tightening of fuel economy standards out at least to nearly 2030.

 

Tundra SR is what I would get or if not enough payload the base F-150 payload package

 

I like that you can spec a locker on pretty much any Ford, although who knows what you can do in 2024 now that they really limited options.

An XL 5.0 with 3.73's and a rear locker would probably be a great setup.

 

If it has to be a new half ton, I think you’re already driving it. Tundra SR with the detuned V35A-FTS. Add a locker if you really want one. I’d prefer aftermarket to the OEM from Toyota which doesn’t engage unless you’re in 4Low. Lame. I get into some hairy situations off road and still haven’t been able to get my open diffs no locker SR5 stuck.

Ford 3.5 Turbo lag very noticeable in cold weather compared to the 6.2 which is very smooth.
Common sense and physics says the Tundra turbo lag with cold weather must be worse with the 3.4L and more weight? Asking. Anyone compare?
The mileage on the 6.2L has gone into the crapper with the cold weather. I asked what it was and he wouldn’t tell me or he didn’t know – its that bad. LOL
he will keep to 40,000. Ride is important for him with the miles he does. Says it has the best ride so far. Better than the Ford F150 Limited.

Question for those with 6.2L.
He wants to put in premium to see if mpg improves. Says manual recommends it but doesn’t say its needed. Does mileage improve?
For what we pay for premium gas here I can’t see it being worth it. Plus all gas now has Ethanol in it.
