Higher oil pressure after oil change

About a month ago, I drained the oil to do an oil change. I was going to install a fumoto valve, but had less-than-ideal results, seen here: https://www.tundras.com/threads/well-this-just-happened.131921/

I filled up with 7.7 quarts of 0w-20 mobil 1 extended mileage after installing a new oem filter, washer, and original drain plug. Oil pressure gauge read significantly higher than I've previously seen, exceeding the 3/4 marker on startup. The needle returned to a bit under 1/2 at operating temp. I checked the oil level, and it was above the high mark. I drained enough oil (the fumoto would have been appreciated for that task) to get the oil level down to about 4/5 of the way to the high mark on the dip stick, so I'm okay with oil level.

The oil pressure is still reading higher than it did before I changed the oil. The oil pressure needle would sit just over 1/4 at idle, and would sit around 1/2 under heavy acceleration. It now sits a bit under 1/2, maybe a bit over 3/8 at idle, and comes close to 3/4 under acceleration.

I installed the car scanner app to get a more precise oil pressure, and it's exceeding 80 psi at startup, and sits in the high 70s at idle until warmup. It seems like the oil pressure stays within normal ranges (25-65) after everything's warmed up, with idle between 10 and 15 psi.

Am I obsessing over a non-issue, or am I reasonably concerned?

 

I have noticed the same thing.

Not sure what it was doing prior as it was brand new. Did the first oil change at 556 miles.

But I do notice 3/4 marker at start up and then backs down to 1/2.

Nothing else seems off or different. But do notice the same thing.

 

I think you may be overthinking this one.

 

Just did my 1st change 2 days ago. Pressure gauge is the same…. 3/4 on start up, and just a bit under 1/2 at idle. 3/4 under acceleration until things warm up. Then 1/2 unless the rpm’s get over 2k

 

Yes you are obsessing over a non issue. That gage is essentially an “idiot light”. Anywhere on the scale it’s fine.

 

Sounds like perfect oil pressure now to me. Was the drained oil original fill? How many miles?

I have had real oil pressure gauges in race and sports cars and I like to see some oil pressure increase on fresh fill, particularly when going to a slightly more viscous oil. For example back in the day racing spec miatas a certain 5w30 (could have been rated 5w25 if that was a category as it was definitely less viscous on the spec sheet) and I'd see slightly less oil pressure than say an Amsoil 30 wt and maybe gave me 2 more hp

Definitely nothing to worry about but curious as to what you drained to understand more. Oil definitely thins (looses viscosity) over the oil change interval, some worse than others. No idea how the new 3.4 oil pump works but more simple designs can most definitely show the oil's loss in viscosity with lower oil pressures.

Wouldn't new oil have higher viscosity than used oil?

 

If it's the same weight as what the truck came with from the factory, I'd imagine it would be the same, if not slightly less viscous due to less particulate leftover from the machining process.

Anyway, 80 psi just seemed high to me.

 

Do you make lots of short trips? We’ve seen oil reports of fuel diluting the oil lowering viscosity. Getting rid of the fuel could bring up the pressure but I don’t think it would be a huge change.

 

I had no change when I did my first oil change. The gauge has never gone past 1/2 and settles in at ~1/4. Maybe a TSB was applied to the newer trucks and I am still running older software??

I just did another oil change and my pressure is 3/4 startup and just under 1/2 (perhaps 1/3 overall) at idle. Is there anyone that can also share if this is where they are seeing their oil pressure?

 

Yeah I am on quarts and added 7qt to start with and checked the level. Then a bit more to where I could ensure it was within the limit.

 

My manual says 7.7 qt or 7.3L. But as others have said the dipstick is lame and its hard to make it out on the level.

 

My oil pressure gauge has read 5/8-3/4 on startup, and just under 1/2 at idle for 200k miles since new. 0 is bad, 100% isn't good, but most anywhere between depending on RPM is good. As mentioned above, the gauge is less of a gauge and more and indicator...

Edit : didn’t pay attention to this being a 3rd Gen thread. I wouldn’t think the gauge readings would be much different but I’m no expert.

 

That is the Oil pressure I see all the time. I'm at 5500 miles on current oil and plan to change in next two weeks. Overall, at just over 12K mileage and this will be the 3rd oil change.
