I'll take the online ones for a good laugh. I have no idea how accurate they are.

I’ve had two real IQ tests (testing after multiple TBIs) and anecdotal observation tells me the little website quizzes are much shorter and results tend to be consistently higher.

EDIT to mention you get 5 separate scores (perhaps from 10 tests, been a while) and the IQ score is an average of those, but consistency and range are assessed just as much as average. Would be odd to test at 85 in one area and 135 in another, and more normal to see a 105, 115, 100, 120, and 105 again, for example.

Whatever this forum told me to do
I’ll share my experience with IQ/Aptitude tests.

TL;DR = we tested 30 folks @ my previous employer – it looked like a perfect bell curve.

So – the owner wanted to test his leadership team to “assess” them. OK. so, he found an aptitude test from one of his industry buddies. This was in 1999.

Well, I was the dude tasked to compile the data. (controller at the time)

    In short:

The owner/President scored ALMOST the lowest.

Our best Operations VP tied the President.

Most folks fell under the AVG.

The folks that scored the highest were those that used their brain for analysis & tough decision making/process improvement. And – those that read a lot.

I did well - I placed 1 std dev to the right with about 3 other folks. There were no 2 std dev folks.

    What it taught me?

The folks that you knew/thought were “brain smart”, generally are.

The folks that get things done “street smart” place in the middle of the bell curve.

You need the brainy people to improve processes.

You need avg people to get the work done.

You need a full bell curve to run a damn good distribution business.

And…..the Pres & CFO were allowed to take it a second time, and then they scored highest. Fvckin’ cheaters. Both were raging narcissists, that could not handle the grandiosity gap that was shown to them.

It wasn't an easy search way back in 2006 when I wrote the test. After that, I stopped caring

    Too many, but not enough....
As a former student of psychology, IQ tests dont REALLY mean anything in the largest of contexts. There is alot of cultural bias built into those. Example, a witch doctor in africa would score lower than an infant, but he can survive in the jungles of africa with a stick, whereas you, who may score at a genius level, would probably die in an hour even with any tools you think you would need. For them to have any bearing, it would be an extremely limited scope and it would have to be administered, and more importantly, interpreted by a professional.

Aptitude tests are different, they can actually be useful in determining where your strengths and weaknesses are in a certain context. Like the army tests to determine what job you would be better at.

Real IQ tests can ONLY be administered and interpreted by a professional. And yes, there is cultural (NOT racial) bias. The most used IQ tests were developed by highly educated people, who are MUCH more likely to be found in the most advanced countries. That said, there are some IQ tests that seek to remove that bias through different means of testing. Web-based IQ tests are worthless parlor games.

And a high IQ does not guarantee success in any way. There are homeless people with IQ's >150. They made bad decisions and have not applied their intellect to improve their situation. Likewise, there are MANY CEO's and political leaders with IQ's barely above 100 (100 is by definition the average), and probably quite a few with IQ's <100.

Agree with this. To quote the poster in my 4th grade class that has stuck with me for 30+ years, "Your I will, is more important than your IQ".

But but but what if the witch doctor used to be a western medicine doctor in, say, Johns Hopkins? He got burned out one day and left for a sabbatical in Africa then got lost in the jungle, but was found by a long lost tribe of other Johns Hopkins ex-doctors. I've heard this happens from time to time.

Highly recommend it. You could even have one custom made. If it seared into my brain for this long it will definitely do the same for someone else.
