Many laws are put or kept in place specifically to be revenue generators. Case in point, Highway 43 in in Alberta. Divided highway, 2 lanes each way, good condition (as far as northern Canuckistani highways go), damned near a straight line. Speed limit? 110km/h. There's no reason other than revenue generation that the speed limit couldn't be 120km/h or even 130km/h. Highway 2 from Edmonton to Calgary is the same.

Everyone drives 120+ on hwy 43 anyways. They're not unsafe speeds and modern vehicles are more than capable of maintaining safe handling at those speeds. It's all revenue generation for the province.

There was a study, (I'm not digging for it now), that came out a few years back and basically came to the conclusion that the majority of people will drive at the speed most comfortable and safe for the road. On highway 43, that means 120 - 130km/h. Sure, some people drive slower, and some people drive faster. The vast majority though will be within that range. Set the speed limits to the commonly denominated speed and leave it at that. According the study, most people who do 130 in a 110 zone won't start doing 150 in a 130 zone. 130 is the intuitive speed, and thus they stick to it.

Having an artificially low speed limit just increases the risks of wrecks as people doing 20 - 30km/h above the limit are now significantly faster than those obeying the speed limit. If the speed limit increases, the people obeying the limit will generally come up to the faster speed, reducing the risks of slow drivers meeting fast drives. Suddenly you have 95% of people doing 130 instead of 60% doing 110 and 40% doing 120 - 130.

So I dropped a glass scale on the steps today and it exploded and then just had a coffee pot fall out of a coffee maker when I opened the rear door on my truck and it broke on the ground so I'm on a real roll.

Exactly. It's like saying speeding laws are stupid because they're just revenue generators for the city.

All joking aside, my LEO buddy loves front plates because it allows him to watch for stolen cars as they pass. If you're not running a front plate on a car they're looking for then he might spin around and check in on you. Buy yeah, no one pulls over for it anymore around here. Think they actually officially made it a non-stoppable offense recently. But you get dinged for speeding if the cop is feeling moody you could just be stacking tickets on top of tickets.

To be a law it should have a clear and articulable purpose. A rear plate is sufficient for IDing a car. If it were not front plates would be mandatory at a federal level.

Apples and oranges. Speed laws can at least be argued from a safety standpoint because lower speeds are lower damage in case of accident. IIRC every 10 MPH increase in speed statistically doubles the chance of death starting at around 30 MPH on up. Sure, it won't prevent an accident but stats show a 60 MPH crash is twice as survivable as a 70 MPH crash.

A license plate is for identification and proof of fee payment. A rear plate satisfies this. Requiring a front plate doesn't change this beyond a level of convenience. It's unnecessary. It 100% does give additional excuses to stop and/or cite anyone who may not comply. It's not a leap to equate it to revenue generation over identification of a vehicle. Hell, even a rear plate is only a halfass vehicle ID because it can be readily and easily removed, stolen, or put on a different vehicle. If they really want to make it vehicle ID, it should be something akin to a permanently affixed serial number (VIN) that is part of the vehicle from the point of manufacture. The fact that it isn't would point more toward it being revenue driven, especially because a stolen plate on a car will get you past 90% or more of the average passing on the road of a LEO. They aren't actively running plates and would have no idea you put somebodies stolen F350 tag on your Tundra.

Dude, don't start bringing the Feds into this conversation. If that's your threshold for "fair" then...:boink:

I wish I could add more fuel to the fire but it's Friday and the booze is kicking in. I'm in too good a mood...but honestly, they actively run plates in my town...the Parking Pricks have license plate scanners and they just drive around in their EVs and hand out tickets if the machine beeps at them. And the fuzz runs anyone's plates they can read while they're driving.
