Yup, snow here in ChiTown. I'm experiencing the same stuff an hour north in Milwaukee, makes me really miss the 1GT! Need to put the snow tires on the Insight.

And yeah, O'hare can really suck. My childhood home is a 10 minute drive from there, so I've flown out from there plenty of times. We didn't fly often, but you get really used to it. One thing that I can say about O'hare, and maybe this is just my experience, but getting your baggage back always takes significantly less time than it does at Midway. Multiple times I've waited hours for my baggage at Midway, which only makes me more unhappy, as I hate flying.

 

I recently found some trees growing in my backyard that my PlantNet app is saying are Burr Oaks. Never heard of that type and Wikipedia says East TN isn't in the native range.

Does this look right? I'm seeing conflicting pictures online. I've got 6-7 growing back there.

 

We have these popping up all around us. Likely a white oak. They spread all over thanks to squirrels.

Thing is, most of the wild ones around us rarely get above 6ft tall and pencil-thin, even after 10-15 years.

Same here yesterday, no snow then it dumped about 5 inches in 4 hours.

So here I am plowing the damn soccer field again because of course we have a game tonight.

 

that acorn i found was a small one. Usually closer to golf ball size.

 

I'm pretty confident it's not a white oak. The leaves look completely different. I have a massive white oak already. From your link the closest match is a Blackjack oak.

I've got a ton of different trees growing back here. Willow oaks, Tulip Poplar, Black Oak, Maples, Red Bud, Hickory, Sycamore and then whatever this one is. Leaning towards Burr Oak.

 

Young trees almost always vary in leaf shape, often significantly, until they've past a specific age, so you can't necessarily use that guide for GA as a de-facto source. Ask any arborist, they should tell you the same.

Look at what other oaks are nearest and you'll likely find the parent tree.

 

Mine was added by the last owners. 4 if the 6 trees they planted have died, because they're planted in blind holes.

I take back my previous comment. I can see some similarities with the White Oak but the other one is less pointy and bigger.

What do you mean by "blind hole"?

 

Holes drilled into rock that doesnt have a drain.
My dakota fire hole in my yard is one, this is another.



When we get enough rain for water to stand, it stands for a week or so. When we dont get enough rain, the rootbound dirt dries out fast.

 

I see some features that look like swamp white oak. Is this tree in a moist or dry location?

Fairly dry but we do get 50-60" of rain annually. I do see some similarities.

My app is saying 10% chance for Swamp White and 16% for Burr Oak.

 

The app is engineered to go by mature leaves, though. 15ft is pretty significant, I dunno. Post oak was my other guess, but white oak is far more prevalent for us 2 hrs south, IME. Seeing the two side-by-side, though ... I dunno.

I had a few-year stint in life where I was growing and grafting trees, native and fruit. I had a couple of trees at least 10 years old and as many feet high from nearby parents, and the leaves were different, the younger tree with fewer substantial branches always had larger leaves, often 2x larger. I was told by Trees ATL's arborist pretty much what I posted above: Basically, "You can't identify based on immature leaves, you can ballpark, but you probably won't get the identity right. And you can't always trust the bark either. Bark, leaves and fruit if you can ballpark age are good enough to nail down most species."

 

The weird thing is that there are several of these growing close to each other, different sizes, and I'm getting different results with the app for each leaf I submit. So I really have no clue. There are a lot more species of oak tree than I was aware of.

I should not be surprised. I recently learned that the Great Smoky Mountains near me have more species of trees than the entire continent of Europe. Tennessee is the most biodiverse inland state.

 

Oh, gotcha. I am not accustomed to soil as rocky as yours. It's impressive there's as much negotiation* as there is!

Thought i had a pic of my DFH on here, but it must've been in a pm. There are three 12" wide 18" deep holes under the mower deck.

& i used to run a pipe into the bottom for air, but i wait until the next day now, so the hole fills with charcoal chunks & ash, then stays warm for 3 days & if i need to get it going, i shove a pipe down there, and poke a tiny hole in the top ash. Heats up & starts whatever i throw at it.

 

the stray cats shit there & polo turns the soil. I cleaned it out all the way down & threw a 40lb steel bar at it, and a 12lb sledge, still holds water. Heat doesnt work, flakes the edges, thinking about setting up a trigger & tannerite. Seeing how far i can launch a plow disc.

 

I never realized how powerful that stuff was. First time I saw it being fucked with was on FPSrussia. Saw this (Tannerite explosion) yesterday... wholyshit. Demolition ranch/abandoned resort

Mature red oak leaves are pointy at the leaf tips. Almost like a needle.
