Yukon 4.88 Gears

Yea I need the regear for sure.. my truck feels like a 4 cylinder and that shit Erks my nerves.. but was thinking so much about this 4.88 which I've heard good things about but I can't just tell that once I get the 4.88 that a bigger gear would come out sometime soon since every other truck brand has bigger already

 

Yea that would suck buddy. Those 5.29's will work great with your 37's. That big beast will get it's pep back. Are you gonna get the Auburn LSD also?

No, I'm not doing the Auburn.. I've spoke to Deeds about it.. I was going to do it but truthfully it would be a waste for me. I don't off road, I'm 100% street truck. I dont know maybe it would be cool to have it but I wouldn't use it. Maybe I'll change my mind but by the time I get ready to do them but as of right now, it's a no.

Can you guys explain to me the biggest reason you're upgrading to LSD?

 

Traction

 

The auburn LSD will automatically engage both rear tires when your tires loose traction. The stock setup on your truck will transfer most of the power to one tire when it looses traction. Say you want to punch the gas both tires will engage equally instead of more power to one rear tire. At least that's how I've always understood it.

 

Great mod, when I do gears I'll absolutely add the LSD as I have on other vehicles. It's all about traction.... stock, the Tundra uses the brakes to keep tires decently hooked up (ie when one spins it adds brakes to that side), which is a loss across the board on power delivery. With a good LSD, power is applied to both rear wheels and there are no brakes involved.

If you want both rear tires to hook up properly get the LSD.

 

That's pretty much how I was told it works.. it's also for people who are mainly off roading and pulling shit..

I spoke with deeds about it and went over all the pros and cons with him and he sells this stuff and told me I honestly wouldn't get it.. it would be irrelivent for you to get it and that's why I'm not doing it.. I get the " well of you're getting the gears done it doesn't cost much more for Labor to add it in since it's already open, but like I said. I'd have zero use for it except to blow another $750.

 

It's not just for offroad. It's also for slippery conditions like rain, snow and ice. Joe, you get a lot of that.

Doesn't matter where you drive ha... with the LSD, when you mash the pedal, both rear tires hook up instead of one and then the other after the stock system applies the appropriate brake. Dry/Wet/Pavement/Dirt/Sand/Mud/Snow. How is that not a better thing, particularly if you are tearing open the diff anyway? It's a no brainer to me based on all my other vehicles.

Having said that, I do enjoy two nice black marks when I leave on occasion, regardless the surface ha...

I'm waiting on those 5.29's!!! Even thou I'm at a BBQ at a friend of mines house that lives across town uphill on the freeway and feels like I'm towing some RV Behind me.. I hope it comes with it the next few weeks.. for real..

 

Check the Nitro's, they come with all OEM bearings and seals vs aftermarket. I also went with the Auburn LSD. I had my local Toyota Dealership do mine. Book says 4 hours front, 4.5 hours rear. Shop rate was $100.00 per hour. The front axels are a bitch, they are built to not wear out and so they are very tough to get apart. Toyota wound up breaking one so that was on them. You will not regret the expense or the performance.

 

Why does the front being IFS matter?

Any particular reason you aren't going front and rear ARBs?

 

If you do a locker on a front independent suspension it's a lot more complicated than a straight axle front end. Here is a great article to help explain why.

So auburn LSD or ARB air locker? I searched but couldnt find the proper Auburn for the tundra. I would think the Auburn would be an easier, cheaper install with lower maintenance because of no pump, tank, lines, etc.

 

So an Auburn LSD is an automatic engaged unit. It engages when it senses loose tire spin. Examples would be snow, rain, spinning tires or something like that. A locker is engaged by you using either air or electrical. I would suggest you call Auburn or a locker company if you have questions.

Yes. Those are the exact part numbers given to me by Auburn gears. I have those exact parts installed on my 2017 Tundra.

 

Very cool 1upper. Are you happy with it? Any reason to go with ARB over the Auburn? Did you do the front diff as well? Does it make noise when engaging/engaging? How long have you had it? Miles?

 

I'm not familiar if ARB has a LSD. I went with Auburn from a personal recommendation. I only did the LSD in the rear. I replaced both front and rear gears with G2 4.88 gears as well to help offset my 37" tires. I don't hear any noise from the LSD or my gears. I've put around 8,000 miles on them so far. I'm very happy with the setup. Finding a good mechanic is key though.
