Pretty much over here and power is back on. Still have shell shock from Fiona this time last year. Glad this one was tamer!

Just back in Ontario from the East coast, getting some planning done on our property in Cape Breton. We left Ont last Thursday & then left Cape Breton Thursday ahead of the hurricane.

just reporting on mileage, I did about 4600km total in the week. 7 gas ups, getting over 700 km/ fill up & never took more than 100l. Tonneau cover, no trailer or racks, wife myself and gear. Running stock sized Falken Wildpeak AT3W P rated tires. Hwy speed averaging between 120-130 km/h typically around 122-125.
Hand calculated mileage per fill up below. I don’t use fuelly, once I enter my info in my app, it only shows the mileage not the distance, or volume used for each entry. So all I have is the mileage numbers.

1- shortest run, gassed up just before entering Quebec so only 500 ish km this one fill up - 12.4 l/100 - 19 mpg ($1.59/l)
    2 - Edmundston 12.4l/100 - 19 mpg ($1.83/l)
    3 - Canso Causeway 13.3l/100 - 17.7 mpg ($1.87/l)
4 - Albert Bridge after driving around on the island for the week 13.0 l/100 - 18.1 mpg ($1.86/l)
5 - Kings Landing outside Fredericton 13.8l/100 - 17 mpg ($1.96/l) - should have gassed up the night before the price jump!
    6 - St Hyacinthe 13.4l/100 - 17.6 mpg ($1.69/l)
    7 - Newmarket 12.6l/100 - 18.6 mpg ($1.73/l)

Im sure if I could be easier on the go pedal, I’d be able to get 20mpg, but there is no fun in that!

I can say, it was a warm in the bits moment on our way back, to see several multi truck hydro crew convoys heading down in advance of the Hurricane making landfall so they could be ready & closer to deploy.

those are good mileage numbers, although I have 295/70r18’s to go on my tundra that’s yet to arrive so I likely won’t see those numbers. My current tundra has 275/65r20 and after you factor in the 8% difference in tire size from oem I get mid to low 13L/100km on highway trips. Around town always see 18-20!

I don't generally worry about it if we're in a heavily treed spot. If we're not, I generally roll it up if it gets windy or when we're away for the day.

Anyone know when Fountain Tire normally does their 4 for 3 sale? I've been watching for the last year or so and haven't seen any ads for it. Wife's new car needs winter tires and wheels and the Corolla needed new summer tires this year, though that will be waiting for spring now.

Was @ Bon Echo and saw they had group site with electricity, but only 15amp.

On the booking page you can search for electric, but I think most group site with electric has been shut down for the winter.

After re-wire the whole chassis it was finally operational, had a good time, over winter going to add more batteries, the goal is be able to do hold a week's of electricity, (about 11kwh).

For you fellas out west, what have you guys found works the best in deep snow?

AT3W was great around city, but one drive up north I discovered in deep snow it was oooooook, and it seems I need to make that trip few more times I want to be prepared, I'm kinda stuck cause I need 18" wheels and 35s (or about) for clearance and I'm towing with it.

I've narrowed it down to Duratrac, are there other worthy options?

I ran Duratracs on a personal truck and have run them on a bunch of work trucks in the patch. I'm not a fan. They wear down quickly and get loud. They're also crap on ice Good on gravel, mediocre in mud. They're popular mainly because Fountain Tire puts them on a 4 for 3 sale now and then.

I loved my Cooper ST Maxx, but they're a very aggressive tire so some people might not like that. Not super great on ice but in deep snow, mud and gravel. The downside is they're heavy, and not 3 Peak rated, just M+S. They could also do better in rain.

I'm currently running Falken Wildpeaks. I'm super happy with them. Great performance in all conditions without being overly aggressive. The only tires I've found to perform better in winter are dedicated winter tires, specifically studded Nokian Hakkapellita.

I'm with @Outbound with the Cooper Stt Max heavy but a great tire in the snow. I found them decent on city streets in the winter too.

I have to take a look at them.

305/70r18 seems ok, 70lbs, my AT3W is right now about 66lbs so its within expectation.

Is it worthwhile to get studs? does it do anything in deep snow?

My brother is a big fan of Toyo. He has the same experience with Duratracs as Aaron.

Studs only help on ice, not in snow.

As @Cpl_Punishment says, studs only help on ice. They do wear down too and lose effectivness over time. I run them due to living up north and getting lots of hard pack and ice. If you have softer snow and dry pavement often in winter, don't bother with studs.

    Very oversimplification.

    Studs = grip on ice
Sipes = grip on ice and harder snow
Blocks = grip on softer snow
Groves = pushes the wet stuff out and helps the snow from sticking
Compound = softer is better in cold temps as it can still flex

If you want more traction on soft snow you want more sipes and blocks. Bigger blocks with wider spaces between are best for soft, fluffy powder. Mud Terrains can be great in powder.

If you want more traction on ice you want more studs and sipes. On ice, you want lots of small patches of surface contact so the blocks should be closer together.

If you want the best all around, you go with heavily siped and studded blocks with deep grooves like the Nokian below. They don't look sexy on a big mall crawler 4WD, but they work the best.

possibly oversimplified but I’d say one of the better descriptions of winter tire “types”.

each and every tire is a compromise. Ideally you select for the conditions you’re most likeky to encounter, and/or the type of vehicle.

my frontier had non studded nokian r 3 ‘s and they were very good.

wifes rav (awd) had nokian studded and there wasn’t much winter the rav couldn’t handle. I’d bet you could almost drive up a frozen telephone pole.

there is a rav4 hybrid in our household with studded nokians. Not sure if its the extra weight of the battery or what but it puts my truck (w studded winters) to shame in the winter.

    Lots of stuff!
We are heading to Porteau Cove next week to hopefully get some kayaking in. We are getting some colder weather but it should be nice to get away.

If it is too cold there we will track down @Mattedfred and check out that campsite. :)IMG_8077.jpg
