In the mid 90s, I lived in Louisiana for a short time. While there, I got a job as a maintenance mechanic in a production plant. It was 12 hr, overnight shifts and my job was was to keep the machines running all night. Each machine had pneumatics, hydraulics, natural gas heating chamber and glue mixed with sawdust. So, sawdust, hydraulic oil, high pressures and open flame, 24/7. I was also on the fire team.
Anyway, took a week or 2 to learn everything, I brought in a tool box with all the hand tools I'd need and then I'd buzz around all night, getting any machine that broke down, back up and running. There was me, another young guy that just got out of the navy and showed me how to rebuild a hydraulic cylinder and a our supervisor. Everyone else were machine operators.
Every time something broke, the supervisor would say to leave it for day shift. That didn't compute with me. I just kept fixing shit. After about a month, he yelled at me and said to go upstairs to the lounge for 2-3 hrs every night and take a fucking nap.
So, I went up there and they had a big welding table area and a spot for rebuilding heating chambers with pipe, ceramic insulation, etc. So I learned about that shit and fabricated fence parts for home at the welding table every night for a few hours.
All that to say, my single experience defines the rest of the universe.
Night shift people are slackers.
