Oil capacity change from 2017 to 2018

Does anyone here know why the oil capacity changes after 2018 to 8.5 quarts from the previous 7.9 quarts. Just did my first oil change on a new to me 2020 5.7 and it took .6 more quarts than my previous 2017 5.7. Just curious as I couldn’t see a difference in the oil pan and was under the assumption it is the same engine configuration they have ran in all the previous years. Thanks all

I’ve always used the manual as a guideline instead of a rule. Drain it. Fill it until it’s full. It takes what it takes. So it should be roughly 8.5qts but my last change took 9 to get to full. Had one that took 8.

 

Observe an oil change interval of 2500 miles, plz.

 

Put in 10 qts just to be safe.
More oil is better.
Plus you can extend changes to 2750.

 

I agree more oil capacity is better overall but what is puzzling to me is I could not pinpoint where the extra oil capacity was coming from. I had both 2020 and 2017 side by side and the oil pans are identical. Also I see a lot of people on here have varying results on the stick depending on the amount of oil they used but for me personally to reach the top dot I have used exactly what the manual specified on both 2017(7.9qt) and 2020(8.5qt) with filter change. I do know they moved the factory back to good ol USA in 2018, just not sure what may have changed(beside the damn trans cooler missing and updated electronics)

 

It's to compensate for 10K mile oil change intervals.

The longer you go on your oil, the more likely it's gonna burn half a quart every 10K. Then dealers will say this is normal.

 

Possibly could be the case. I was always under the impression that too much oil within a quart or so was worse for the engine than running a quart or so low. Putting unnecessary extra pressure on the seals where as within a quart low was still inside the dots on the stick. Maybe I’m just being paranoid

 

This is what makes the most sense, since the engine, pan, etc hasn't changed. If anything, fluid capacity should be less since they removed fluid coolers (not sure if they removed oil cooler, made it smaller, it's the same, yada).

Do not put 10 qts of oil in your 5.7.

 

The oil cooler is a good point. I did not think to compare the two before I sold the ‘17 but maybe with added line length and/or increased line size would explain the extra capacity. It’s just odd to me because as this forum goes not a lot of changes like this would go unnoticed as most folks on here are very observant and do their own maintenance

 

Against my own habits I had wife's new V8 Sequoia serviced at the dealer while waiting for the warranty parts. They put in 10.5 qts of oil. How do I know that? I replaced that oil 3k miles later and did the same mistake: assumed my oil jugs are gallons, while they were 5 qt in fact Noticed only when was disposing of old oil and saw the label on the jug.

Btw, V8 didn't give a sh*t about +2 qts of oil.

 

I would think making this mistake once or twice should be no big deal but continual over fill I would be cautious of the extra pressure this may create

 

Interesting. Where are these windows located on the tundra? Never mind just reread and you said drain lines. Just specifically a turbo thing?

 

No, it's the opposite in fact: pressure loss, due to aeration of the oil that gets into contact with the crankshaft.

We need to appreciate 3UR more: I once spend more than 6 hours in the ditch trying to free my Tundra, the cabin was tilted even more than the bed on this picture. All the oil was on the driver's side of the engine, I feared it would cause the oil pickup tube going above the surface and starve the engine to death. No. 3UR didn't care. When the game warden finally pulled me out, the truck was purring like it did the day when I took it from the dealer's lot. Myself was sore and full of regrets that I didn't buy a winch yet, but Tundra didn't notice anything.

 

This is why I lurk here. Solid advice and good stories that reassure me I made the right choice swapping to a Toyota. To be fair it took so long because my ‘94 f150 would not die. Still runs but has 350k miles so reliability isn’t quite where I feel comfortable making the 8 hour beach trips anymore

Dad bought it new and gave it to me when I turned 16. 240k miles on it in 2006. I drove it until late 2019. Still runs great but shifts are a little off in hot weather and of course every engine/body mount needs replacing along with pretty much every other piece of rubber. All stock with the exception of alternator, water pump, etc. I’m most proud of how well the paint held up. Planning on a full rebuild in the upcoming years with my now 1.5 year old son. Oh ya, these old V8 Tundras are tough as coffin nails. I regret I chose to spend so much time laying under less reliable vehicles and haven't switched over to Tundra a decade ago.

I'm passing my 2005 Volvo wagon to the oldest son in a few years. It failed all around, only the fuel pump and like 20 bushings in the rear subframe are original at 270k miles, but it took me to places and taught how to do important things like a full engine or transmission rebuild And he wreck it anyways

 

That’s how I feel. I know a lot of people hate on the tundra for being such an old style design but for me that’s what drew me to them. If I want my ass massaged while I drive or cylinders to shut off on the highway I would have stuck to the big 3 but somehow reliably seemed a bit more important. Go figure.

 

This is true. I would never put my kids in anything at first I wasn’t ok with watching the tow truck taking away totaled. I also have a 15 year old daughter so my main focus is crash test rating and reliability. I’m almost certain the first one won’t last. She’s blond through and through

 

5 hours after driving test my daughter had her first mishap. 6 hours fixing on a Saturday and thank the good Lord it was only minor damage to the car and no damage to her or the other driver. This last post aged well…

 

I know the 4.0 Tacomas had oil coolers but did not know 5.7 Tundras did.

 

My 2017 has always taken 8.4 quarts to get to the full line on the stick. Sounds like the manual in 2018 finally caught up with the reality.

 

Gen2: drives to 1M miles even with low oil level because of misprint in factory manual
Gen3: randomly dies of oil starvation

 

I thought the top dot was "excess" or at least it is in my 2017 Gen 2 manual. Manual states something to the effect of, come up to operating temp, shut down, wait at least 5 minutes, then check with the dip stick dots toward the engine.

 

They know you'll lose a bit to the damn cam towers.
This reminds me of the Tacoma I had that was WAY off. I think I had the V6 dipstick in the 2.7
