Should I trade in for a used Tundra or keep my paid off Silverado?

If the goal is long-term, hassle-free ownership, Tundra all day every day. If you are the type who likes to maintain your own vehicles, it is (almost) a joy to work on. Everything is laid out well and easy to reach.

With my Yukon XL, I had to remove an exhaust bracket and use a ratchet strap to pull the exhaust out of the way just to drop the transmission pan. So much of the way GM vehicles are put together just seems to be a total afterthought.

Mostly agree. But how about the starter on a first Gen? Or the alternator on these? They all have some head scratchers when it comes to how they decided to put them together. Sometimes packaging wins over repairability.

I have no experience with a 1st gen.

I've heard the starter on the 3UR-FE is a PITA, too. But maintenance is FAR more hassle free in my experience

Almost agree. Having to remove the skid plate on either is a pain. The cartridge filter on my 2019 could have been mounted on the top of the engine like my 5 series was or like my wife’s JGC and then oil changes would be a breeze.

That design is actually a plus, since oil filter does not drain and always have oil. Oil pressure builds up quicker.

If it was that important I feel like that 5 series wouldn’t have made it to over 450k miles with no rebuild required. Didn’t smoke and ran like a sewing machine.

    10w40 or 20w50, too? ;)

I had a non-turbo inline 5 from Volvo, that thing runs until compression rings wear out.

I love both my old 2000 Tundra and my old 2005 Suburban. Tundra has 250K and Burb has 305K. Both been super reliable. Tundra clearcoat failed. Burb has intermittent Vortic lifter tick. Tundra held value better. Burb is worth essentially nothing but much more comfortable highway cruiser. Just drove to FL and back at 80 and it’s smooth ride. Love em both. Chevy is easier to work on. Go with your gut

I went from a 2013 Tundra to a 2015 GMC Sierra and it was nice. Good gas mileage, comfortable ride, all the bells and whistles but started having issues with the electronics. I kept it for just shy of 2 years and noticed when the new year came it dropped significantly in value. That may not be the case these days with the way the market is but it was enough of a drop for me to unload it before the problems and the value got worse.
Glad to be back in a Tundra. The extra in gas is worth the reliability to me.

Don't think either decision is wrong. I would hate to take on payments on a large loan at today's rates, but you're looking at around $10k for a 3 year newer truck. I think you also get a longer warranty on CPO? Is that still a thing? I'd probably make the change and get that $10k paid off as fast as I could. I had a '14 Sierra, and both the wife and I wish we'd bought our Tundra then instead of waiting until 2020 to get it. No regrets going to Tundra, other than not doing so sooner.

I don’t think it’s an issue. Apparently an anti siphon valve keeps the filter full - I know the early FJ Cruisers had the filter inverted on top of the engine and I never heard of any problems other than the mess of removing one.

The fact that they are selling a used Tundra for more than it was new should tell you something. You obviously don’t drive that much and upgrading an 18 Silverado for a 21 Tundra for only 5-6k would be a no brainer for me. The 21 Tundra is the best year to get for a used truck and being a limited it will have all the latest goodies. I’m not sure what model Silverado you have but the 21 Tundra should have all the bells and whistles your 18 Chevy has. Plus you get the reliability and solid resale value. Most importantly you get to join a great group of knowledgeable enthusiasts!!!

Yeah with interest and taxes I think I’ll owe more than 5-6k in total (maybe 10+?).

My Silverado is a LTZ so the features I will give up are heated steering wheel, memory seats with cooling, side mirrors tilt down in reverse and are power-folding, better sound system, plenty of under rear seat storage with no modification needed, and the extra power from the 6.2.

But yes I have had two tundras in the past 2001 and a 2012. I traded in the 2001 on the 2012. I got rid of the 2012 because of the terrible MPG (it came lifted 6” with 32.5 in tires).

This is a hard decision as I was hoping my Chevy would last but as others have said these don’t have the reliability/peace of mind that Toyota does.

'21 limited nightshade 4x4 MSRP was more likely around $54-55K if not more. My SR5 MSRP was almost $53K.

How terrible MPG is your breaking point? I only got 13-14 stock around town. I’ve also had a Denali trim 6.2 - I don’t miss it. More power was nice but not at the expense of GM reliability.

21 crewcab 4x4 tss package. The sticker price back in Oct/Nov of 21 was 53.5 and the sticker price on the 21 TRD Pro was $58.5, I found a used 21 for $48. Couldn't justify the 10K increase for Pro.... I shouldv'e done it though

Again, third and last time, then I’ll shut up. You can find a nicely equipped low mileage 20-21 Tundra for whatever you sell your Chevy for. Then you owe nothing. Paid off Tundra. Just saying.

Found 4 for sale within 500 miles of Dallas. My friend has one too. I like the dark accents and color keyed / no chrome look of them.

Also my fathers 2020 Pro was also $55K sticker. I can’t imagine there was that big of a jump in 21 other than dealer markups

The TSS package was all port installed or dealer installed package and was total of $5K added. The bad thing is its hard to find a tundra SR5 thats not TSS if its not TRD package in the south.
The Pro I looked at was 58.5K before the dealer added $995 for some paint protection BS. (could've been for running boards/safe/tonneau cover)

The end of the 21 models got hit with a heavy MSRP markup.

Is a Tundra that is 3 years newer with 3,000 more miles worth another $10k?

Honestly unless it has some features you just have to have, it’s prob smarter money wise to stay with the Chevy.

Sales tax would be $3,000 in my state plus doc fees, them pitching you a warranty ect. I think this is at least a $10k jump when considering fees.
