Anyone used the mobile 1 oil filter

I’m about to change my own oil at 2k miles. Before I go on a 4K road trip. The only thing I could find is the mobile 1 103A. Has anyone else used one? I’m surprised about how small it is. Thanks in advance

 

I have used them a lot on other vehicles, but not on my Tundra with only 500 miles on it. Never had a problem, they make a high quality filter. Champion makes them as well as K&N filters. I’ll be curious to hear what other Tundra owners say.

 

Toyota ones at the dealership are usually only about $7.00 around my parts (Colorado), so I didn't see any reason in going with anything else. Think you might be able to buy those on Amazon or possibly ebay/fleabay. I actually ended up using a oil filter wrench adapter from my now gone Suzuki SV650 motorcycle that I had laying in the tool box (grabbed it thinking there is no way this will....whelp yep it fits perfectly). So I used an oil filter wrench that I used to use to change the filter on a motorcycle. I was a little surprised as well at how small it is. Guess that's why there is close to 8 quarts in the engine (key to pollution is dilution).

**edit- only buy from what may be a reputable source on the Amazons or fleabay. If you are close enough just go to the dealership and you can usually get them cheaper buying them through the dealers online shop and then picking them up at the dealer.

 

I just did my 5k oil change and used the Mobil 1-103a, had zero issues. It says it will last 20k miles, so I might not change it at 10k and wait until 15k. I also added a Fumoto Valve for cleaner and quicker oil changes.

 

Careful about ordering from sites other than Toyota dealerships. There are fakes out there... should be able to find some videos on youtube about that. They are relatively cheap at the dealerships.

 

True. I was at the Walmarts and they had a "toyota" filter on their shelf that was supposedly a "Toyota" filter because it was in a Toyota box and when you open the box its just a black filter with no writing on it at all. Unlike the OEM Toyota/Lexus Filters which have all sorts of writing in multiple languages and actually have "Toyota" on them. Valid advice, don't always trust everything you buy on the internets or hell even find in stores these days. What that tommy boy reference "If i stuck my head up a butchers ass, then I'll take his word"? No no thats not it "If I take a steamer in a box and guarantee it.... don't remember....you get the idea. I mean tommy boy technically is the correct source here....

 

Yes, there are other threads out there on the counterfeits. There are legitimate dealers that sell on eBay as well, but when the counterfeiters can make them look 100% identical on the outside, why risk it to save a dollar or two. There are plenty of dealers that will sell at a discount from their dealer site. Seems a lot less risky to just buy them from their sites. You bought an expensive truck. Do you really need to save $2 on such a critical part like an oil filter?

I keep reading here about Toyota filters for six or seven bucks at dealers. My dealer here in WA gets $12 for them. I’m going to have to try some neighboring dealers. I’ve always used WIX filters. (Over 40 yrs now) John WIX and his partner invented the spin-on oil filter. They do an incredible job. They have one for our Tundras and one specifically for synthetic oil. The

Not sure what part of Washington state you live in (I've lived in Vancouver, Puyallup, and Aberdeen), but at Toyota of Lake City in Seattle they are selling them for about $7.62. The key is buy them through the online portals and pickup in store and they are usually a better price than the parts counter. Also through out the year they usually have some special 20% or 25% off's for parts and will knock the price below $7.00. You just have to check often to catch the special sales. Typically though if you show the parts counter the price they offer online they will typically match it at the counter too. The cavate to that is not every dealer has a online parts ordering system because that way they can charge whatever they want if they aren't transparent.

You need to reread my comment, I'm trusting it for 10k, not 15k.

 

Its more a cost thing for me at least...mobile 1 oil filter is around $15 or $20 for the two options Advance Autoparts sells around the corner from me. Or go to the dealer which is about 3 or 4 miles away and get the filter intended by the god given engineers at Toyota for less money....basically two or three OEM filters for the price of one Mobile one. If you don't have a Yota dealership near by, then I don't see any issue going to the autoparts store..... and based on testing and teardown I've seen on the university of Youtubes WIX is probably the filter to buy in my opinion. Fram filters at the autoparts store are comparable in price and I've run those many years with zero issues too, so it probably doesn't matter one bit what filter you use. I might go WIX filters once out of warranty or might stick OEM, but for now OEM is cheap so I'll keep using em....we all know you are long outside of the warranty period and as you've shown it usually doesn't make one bit of difference if you buy the best or just use what you have till the wheels fall off.

 

@Eurodriver and we also know if you had the option to use a angle grinder/sawszall to remove the oil filter you would be all over that.

So unless my reading is off, this sounds to me like you trust it till 15k. Not to mention I have seen a 10k oil filter vs a 5k and its very different. Let alone 15-20k. But you do you.

 

No, difference. The same beating of the dead horse just like what oil is better. Change it regular and you will be fine no matter what you use.

 

He says he changed it at 5K, so if he waits until 15K that is net 10K. That's how my brain sees it anyway.

 

I’m in Olympia and dealing with Toyota of Olympia. And you’re spot on!! I walked in and paid over $12 for a filter a month ago and just now bought one online from them with the option to pick-up at the parts counter for $6.64 !! Twice the price if you walk in??? That’s Ludicrous!! Guess we have to pay for the counter guy to look it up and go get it?? Someone had to take my printed order, go get it, and put it in a holding bin. Whats the diff? Thanks for the heads up. Will be interesting when it comes to something big like an alternator.

 

So let’s do some math. I just changed my oil filter at 5k and I want to use it until 15k, how many miles is 5k to 15k?

So when I see people come in at 20,000 or 10,000 on their oil services with problems it is not the oil filter. It is the oil that breaks down and not the oil filter(among many other reasons too). The marketing on the oil filter to tell you 20K is just to sell you a filter and make it think it is better than the others. The Full and Denso filters we use at my shop do not have any mileage ratting on them? My assumptions on Mobil 1 filers is that they probably do not make them but buy them from a quality builder and relabel them!! I would stick with a trusted filter company like Wix, Denso or just buy the factory Toyota filter from the dealer if it is easy. As mentioned above they are priced well. The only part when buying from a dealership is there is no rule that they have to sell at list price. Most dealerships have multiple prices. One if you walk in, one if they install it and one for wholesale.

 

You start by stating that the filter will last 20k, and you go on to say you will wait till 15k. So I took it as 15k total, just like another member did. But you do you, not my engine. PS, I hear the Mobil filters add 5hp.

 

I hope you’re joking. That’s a load of crap. You’ll get more HP out of some good muffler grease ;-)

 

Forgot about the muffler grease. Blinker fluid is also good for some decent HP gains but not as good.

 

Go to project farm if you want real test on oil filters/oil and about everything else.

In all of my years of research on oil and oil filters, I have never come across a company that states one oil or oil filter is better than the next. There are small-time people doing their own research, but no major labs doing this research. It is all in what makes us feel warm and fuzzy and believing the companies marketing! You talk to Asian car techs, and they like Eneos or Idemitsu , European car guys like Liqui Moly !!

If anyone has found a company that does this, I would love to know. I look into about once a year to make sure we are using a premium oil for our clients
