All 1500s have dropping capacity issues. If you are spending $80k north buy a diesel HD. The capacity will do everything you need, the engine warranties are 100k miles, and the resale values are off the charts.

 

Not going to argue with you on capacity. However, I'm most definitely not going to spend that much on a truck. My issue is that the powertain on these HD's are not good long term, whether it is the transmission or engine. I hear the warranty argument a lot, but when something craters on your truck and the dealership won't give you a loaner, with months of parts backlog, you have a serious problem on your hands. It is becoming an increasing problem.

 

I think there are a lot of HDs on the road with 400k plus miles that say different. I am still in contact with the buyer if my 2008 Dmax w/ Allison. 275km still going strong. Dont base you onions on the internet. A few people with problems make it their 2nd job to trash a brand; satisfied customers are too busy enjoying their trouble free rides to spend all day on the net

 

Old diesel reliability and new diesel reliability may not be the same thing. Current crop of trucks seems to be more problematic and less reliable across the board.

 

My opinions are based on me working in construction, in the field with HD trucks. We've had many HD trucks fail us through various problems. I don't just base my opinions on internet hearsay.

That point aside, supply chain and part shortages are a major problem across the board, so I'm not very eager to jump into another brand knowing that what I have is generally on the upper end of reliability.

 

Who says - the people selling cars? My truck hasn’t depreciated 20% in 7 years. Paid $45k in 2016 - now selling for $39.5k.

 

Honestly I can't fault your decision to go to the raptor, its a bad ass truck, While the TRD Pro has stepped up in this generation its still not on par with the capabilities of the Raptor.

 

I have owned 2 Raptors, the SVT Raptor was the best built construction wise. The Raptors I have owned were both fully loaded decaled out models. I would say that the parts in them are as cheap plastic bits as you can get. Don't get a sunroof model unless you want to have to replace it anywhere from 50-60k miles. Additionally, the Fox shocks underneath them has increased in price even tripling or quadrupling the original price of the shocks. UAW is a JOKE, they complain about not being paid enough while not producing anything not to mention they historically has always supported the democratic party. They get what they vote for and then when they don't get enough money they whine like they are slave labor. It is crap, the UAW has destroyed domestic vehicle production in the US.

 

Yeah but, Raptors also have amazing on-road characteristics. Nothing else rides like it.

 

Yes, you get better ride quality on the road, at least initially. However, there is a price to owning a truck with Fox suspension.

Having (and still owning) a truck with Fox shocks, they tend to leak after 30-60K and need to be rebuilt, which is a problem. It's getting harder and more expensive to rebuild them. The springs are setup to where a normal spring compressor will not work. You basically need a Branick wall mounted spring compressor. The rest of the rebuild is not your typical DIY job.

Maybe for avid offroaders who do these maintenance intervals, this isn't an issue. I think the majority of Raptor street queen drivers are probably driving around with blown seals after 50K.

 

RAS HD is pretty great.

I could just add some new leaf packs, box the frame, do a legit brake upgrade, and toss a Harrop under the hood. Who needs a diesel?

 

I'm considering trading for this.
1 ton, led upgraded lights, 2 or 3 maybe 4 tone paint. Free BLNOS under coating!
Has adaptive alignment and I'm told it makes up your mind where it's going.

Have you looked into something like a Trailer Toad? It's not perfect for every situation, but it's a solid way to bypass the payload issue and keep a reliable Tundra vs going HD.

Sure thing. I was looking into it when I was still in the market for a travel trailer. Things changed and I went a different route, and changed trucks, but I would rather spend on something like that than the shop bills of a big 3 HD truck.

 

It’s okay - I know it’s been a rough day with three more engine failures reported. I think it’s the first time we’ve had three in one day.

Generally speaking most vehicles, yes, but not Toyotas. Sticking with generalities, they generally take about 4-5 years to hit that 20%+ mark.

That also tracks for trucks in general. They hold value better than other vehicles. Notice the date of 2020, so nothing to do with the crazy value inflation.

I think the confusion is with the bold bit. You previously said "They say you lose 20% when you drive off the lot. You are ahead of the game." and I think that was ambiguous enough to be interpreted as you stating that Toyotas lose 20% driving off the lot as well. While the average across vehicles may be a 20% loss, when dealing with an exception like Toyotas it is best to not use the average. The average IQ is between 85-115, so saying people have IQs in that range is not inaccurate, but if we are talking about exceptions like MENSA (Minimum IQ 132) then that point is irrelevant. The average IQ doesn't apply to MENSA and the average 20% drop doesn't apply to Tundras.

The way you phrased it made it sound as though you were implying that it is in dispute.
