TPMS different 05 to 06?

Hey guys, local ad from a shop close to me has 4 TPMS sensors that work for tundras. Thing is , they are telling me for sure it won't work for an 05, it has to be an 06+ ....

Sounds weird to me as I was thinking most things are identical 05 to 06? I could be wrong obviously but can anyone confirm this?

This shop is not Toyota specific or anything, they could also be wrong

 

I have a 06 double and I would play it safe and go with

Denso 550-0103 TPMS (Factory OEM). You will need 5 if you are replacing them all. The spare tire requires one.

 

Here's what I'd add.

First off, if it's not Denso, don't use it. It follows the rule of thumb: If it's something you can't easily access or takes more than an hour to replace, so it's painful to replace later due to compatibility/premature failure, then use OEM brands (Denso, Aisin). I suspect they're probably using MX Sensors, not Denso.

If it is Denso, get the part number. I say this because from what I've seen Denso has different part numbers depending on your type of wheel (steel vs. alloy). Like, the sensor Jerry linked, 550-0103 (formerly 550-0101) is alloy wheels only (on some applications) and appears compatible both my Access Cab Limited in '05 and '06 flavors, lots of Tacomas, Toyota and Lexus SUVs etc.. However, I see 550-0104 (formerly 550-0102) is advertised as only for steel wheels, like my full size spare. What I've never been able to get an answer on, is whether 550-0103 can be used with steel wheels or not ...

Funny enough, I just hunted. @jerryallday's part number will work with the OEM steel spare according to this review from an '06 DC owner. Which is awesome, because I have a spare from my wheel/haul upgrade, and I need to install it in the truck sooner than later. Oh - and cost isn't too bad buying these straight up considering they're good for 15-20 years, just don't buy 'em on scAmazon/fleaBay lest you end up w/fakes. I got them cheaper off RockAuto (Amazon was higher at the time). Receipt below for (5) sensors with 5% discount. Bet I could've done better if I'd have ordered thru SummitRacing.com or tpms.com

Don't feel too special. Technically nobody has to worry about this. Based on video on the 'Tube you can easily go into the system and delete all the sensors, and there's nothing for TPMS receiver to communicate with, thus no communication broken.

 

Would love to find that video to see if it actually works on my wifes 2017 on all ID's.

What I do know is that when I was attempting to remove ID's for hers, I had to at least adhere to what Techstream and the FSM said. Meaning I had to have an entry even if a false entry of min 0000000 or max FFFFFFF. I have not tried more than one with the same format but would love to see if it can be done.

The video was using one of the Autel 'Maxi' tools. Lemme see if I can dig up the video. I ran across it while trying to glean how to bypass my flashing TPMS predicament.

 

Totally coming up empty, and I usually browse in private mode, so no video history (it would've been months ago when I wrote up how to clear TPMS codes out using OBDLink MX+).

I'll poke around again later, and tomorrow. I want to say the person I was watching was using a Maxi808, but it may've been in Techstream, I really don't remember. But they were able to replace with essentially empty data. I don't think it's possible to change the Main Tire value to zero in Techstream, lest that's how I'd try to accomplish it. I want to say the only options are '4' or '5'.

I'm also curious if it's variable. From poking around just now, it sounds like some newer vehicles, like the 2018+ Camry, allow you to register a summer and winter tire set and easily toggle between the two, without needing a tool like ATEQ's QuickSet. I know that'd be nice for some dudes like @daveeasa who - I think from our previous conversations - had a similar tire change situation.

 

Yeah, I have OEM sensors in my winters and some DT aftermarket ones in my summers. But only one of three trucks has TPMS so not a massive deal. I just take them to DT and go do my run workout. Getting close to time to do that.

I could see going with autel and cloning for the next set of tires on the ‘16 but I’ve also had plenty of trouble when I had a TPMS in my spare as it was getting picked up by mistake and messing things up. Yanked that one and I’m finally stable on TPMS for now.
Would be super cool if scangauge could serve as a TPMS receiver too. I wouldn’t mind having it in the other trucks.

Denso 550-0103 for all 5 tires. I am the original owner of my 05 Tundra and just replaced my TPMS sensors for the second time. The first time I replaced the four alloy wheels with original Toyota TPMS however they were twice the price as the Denso which seem to be the same thing. I opted for the Denso and replaced them once again including the steel wheel spare tire. This was the first time however I replaced the spare tire TPMS (19 years) as I never knew it had a sensor as I never had a light on. What I found was that the spare tire sensor was never programmed to my vehicle. I now have 5 TPMS sensors programmed on my Tundra. I used my Kingbolen K10 OBD2 programmer to manually program the TPMS sensors to the vehicle. I used my Thinkcar TPMS G2 to read the sensors after they were installed inside the tires so I knew which sensor what in what position.

Quick question, out of curiosity. Can the Thinkcar TPMS G2 program sensors (clone) without removing the sensor from the tire?

I’m thinking ahead over here. I went to discount tire yesterday to get a 2nd set of wheels rubbered up. I had them install new TPMS and asked them to clone those sensors to my existing sensors, but I have my doubts they actually did the cloning. I know there are tools capable of reading an ID just via proximity but all of the programmers I’ve found require you to insert the base of the sensor into a slot for cloning/programming.

 

I wish I knew the answer to this question as I just recently purchased the G2 so I would not have to pay someone else to do it since I already have my Bi-Directional OBD2 scanner. I have only used the G2 twice over the last few weeks both times on my 05 Tundra. I believe it can clone but only its brand of TPMS. Whether it can be inside the tire I have no idea.
