Hi there, I am getting conflicting feedback from my dealer here in Canada regarding my 2021 Tundra Platinum when it comes to TPMS sensor programming between summer and winter tires.

I have the OEM rims with the TPMS sensors installed on the truck currently and the works as designed. I am in the process of buying a set of winter tires on a different set of rims with OEM TPMS sensors in them. The dealer is telling me that each time I switch the tires I will need to bring the truck back to them for programming so that the truck reads the tire pressure.

Is this true? I have not had this issue with other brands (Honda) previously. And I really don't want to pay anyone to change over my tires when I can do it myself for nothing.

If it is true, and I opt not to install the TPMS sensors in the winter rims, does this negatively anything on the vehicle other than not seeing the tire pressure in the dash?

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

    Happy Friday :)

The 20/21's read the sensors without having to go to the dealer. It can be a pain at times to get them registered to the truck and getting them to read the pressures by following the steps in the manual, but the truck does do it. Mine was a pain when I did it and the truck was being stubborn, but it did eventually work. Now I avoid that headache by using the Autel TS508 TPMS scanner.

I went the Autel route for my 2011 Element. Bought the programmable sensors and cloned the original Honda parts. It also reads my 2017 Fiat 124 Abarth and my 21 Tundra. I have little doubt I could clone the other vehicles the same way I did the Honda.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I am going to go with TPMS sensors in both sets of wheels and if I have issues I will look at getting a programmer however it seems that that shouldn't be necessary.

    Cheers,

Every truck is different....mine was stubborn. The AutelTS508 was well worth the money for me.

For my 21, the procedure requires a couple of details not listed in the manual. After the swap, drive it one cycle. Next time you go to drive it, leave it in park until the warning light goes on solid. Make sure your dash display is on the tire pressure display. Press the reset button 3 times and the light starts flashing. When it stops flashing, go ahead and drive and it will shortly reset.

It's a finicky system. I did mine that way the last time I rotated tires. The pressures came up, but the tire positions were wrong. I did a same side, front to rear rotation, but the positions were diagonal from what they were supposed to be.

Mine did that once on a rotation. Put a sensor in the 5th wheel and do a 5 wheel rotation. Went back under and turned the spare so the valve was at the back and repeated the reset and everything sorted out. But, yeah it is kind of ridiculous.

I apologize ahead of time if this sounds like a stupid question....

I have a '21 TRD Sport Premium with the factory 20" rims and tires. I purchased a new set of 18" SCS Ray 10's and Nittto Ridge Grappler 275/70R18's. I want to purchase a new set of factory TPMS sensors. Do I purchase the exact same sensors that my truck was equipped with or do I purchase the TRD Off-Road sensors as the Off-Road is factory equipped with 18" wheels? I know that it has to do with the tire pressure but can the same factory sensors be re-programmed to adjust to the optimal inflation for the 18" Nitto's? The dealer hasn't been very helpful as they seem lost. Any help/input is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

You may want to look at @Jeff_5_7 and get his opinion. Obviously nobody that does not want them does not need them. I like them because I do not have to pull over to find out what is going on with my tires.

Just an FYI, 2018 does read the TPMS locations as well when rotated.

I am honestly not familiar with the difference in the factory ones and the TRD Off road ones. Is it a mounting issue on a different style/material of wheel?

I would think as long as you can get the factory sensors properly mounted in the off road wheels it should work. They just read and send tire pressure data, shouldn't matter if its on a 20" or 18" wheel.

I am not familiar with the difference of the 2 myself. I just bought 5 TPMS from Toyota through Discount and got a sweet deal since they messed up on the first ones. I went out to the truck and because it took so much time I made a quick round of the truck looking mainly at tires and wheels. When I got home and was looking at again the tires (changed from 35 to 37) and then I seen it. The TPMS stems were rubber and long as hell!! I know the manager and drove down there the next day and asked him if he inspected my truck after everything was mounted. He said yes and why of course and we walked out. He is a wheeler and said "OMG it is hard to find good help!!" We both had a good laugh and he said he could fix me up.

    Sorry, just started drinking LOL

I bought TPMS for my truck and gave the VIN number. It does not matter what wheel you have, they should all be the same otherwise the sales would be all over the place I would think.

I would check around for dealers that give discounts local. There are so many that do and easier than paying shipping and make sure you have an easy return path if needed. They usually have discounts for Tundras.com, local clubs, etc. but they are out there. I believe it was a difference of $120 and $87.50 that I paid per sensor

Thank you for the reply Jeff. The dealer got back to me this afternoon and stated that they're not certain if the factory tpms sensors would work or not. They were certain that they would however charge me a 25% restocking fee if I had to return them in unused condition. That is unacceptable as in order to find out, they would obviously need to be installed. Ludicrous!

I get mine from these guys, https://www.tpms.com/. They are reasonable and Costco orients them to my truck for free once I bolt the wheels on. Not sure if 2018 Platinum is a different part number.

Thank you for the link bmw345. My son bought me the HUF OEM sensors with gunmetal stems from TPMS.com. I sincerely appreciate the help!
