What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

I tried just about all listed Toyota models from like 2005 to 2008 on the flashing software and those 2 additional buttons just never showed up. No biggie.

I just dealt with mine after some storm damage, and got fucked over. I wish you luck man. Up here in MI they told me my truck was worth 2200!
Fought them for a couple weeks, made little ground. F StateFarm.

 

Looks like it's time to turn it into a full-time dedicated trail rig.

 

Just looked at my Firestone Destination 3 tire receipt from 3 years ago.

22k miles and the rear tires are almost bald. Talk about shitty tread life.

Gotta get a rear tire plugged tomorrow under their paid tire protection plan.

I’ll have to ask what the likelihood i can can new ones for 1/2 the cost. These tires should last to 70k miles.

Downside is i did my own rotations.

 

My rear Terra Grapplers G2s are wearing down so I'll be tired shopping before long as well. May go with Cooper ATP like I did with my Ford.

 

I put together a spreadsheet with all the obvious damaged parts. Using OEM or equivalent prices it sits at $3400, but I'm sure I'll find some more when I actually inspect it thoroughly.

This is my fun weekend rig, so I have plenty of time to negotiate with the other parties insurance. In fact I don't really have the time to work on it until mid January.

I've got the same issue with our Highlander. Came with some tire that's supposedly 60k mile tire. Just hit 25k miles, already need new tires. Total crap.

 

I wouldn't doubt if Firestone gives me crap like I'm ineligible under the tread warranty since they didn't do the rotations every 5k or some bullshit.

I was in the far right lane approaching an intersection to make a right turn. The other driver crossed through a gap in the two lanes of traffic to the left to enter a business driveway. I was about 20 feet away when I first saw the fender poke out. I was traveling at a reasonable speed, just no time to react at those distances.

 

Interesting, these images are taken from the same FSM, but show different specs for the LBJ bolts on the 1st and 3rd pages. WTF?!

 

Well, I guess that’s the last time i EVER buy a Firestone tire. A-holes wouldn't patch the tire because the hole was at a 45 degree angle.

They also wouldn’t give me a discount on new tires because the tread depth was too low regardless of the tire wearing out prematurely at 22.3k miles instead of the 70k miles i should have gotten (Firestone Destination 3).

Jerk tells me the tire wear needs to be 100% uniform across the tire to cover it or i need to show paperwork the tire were rotated every 5k along with a yearly front end alignment. Tire wear was 2/32” off on one side.

Ended up going to a local place that still plugs tires. $10 job and done!

 

If you don't want it to be a total loss I would suggest letting the insurance company write a preliminary estimate but do not go forward with dropping it off at a shop for disassembly. Once it's deemed a TL that's pretty much final. You can use the check that you get and add money to it to fix it otherwise it could probably end up as a total loss.

But the insurance company will be factoring aftermarket and LKQ used parts to lower the cost of their estimate. They most certainly will not approve for OEM parts. The general age that most insurance companies approve for OEM parts is anything less than 2 years old.

American made. Their plugs are vulcanizing thus can be considered a non-temporary repair. I've saved so much hassle, especially living in a city where construction is off the rails, by plugging my own tires and even my friends and neighbors tires.

Anyway ... it's worth a shot having one of these kits and learning the simple process. Internally patching is always better, but in 30-40 years now of rolling on plugged tires, I've never had one fail, never had a tire blowout. But I've also never done something stupid like try patching a hole outside the tread surface.

Just don't buy your kit on scAmazon. Same BS problems with counterfeiting of products on things like this. Buy from them directly.

I think there was a certain kit on Big Gurl people here said was good. I recall seeing maroon colored plugs instead of black though.

They can, but big box tire shops are intentionally difficult. If it's not a cut-and-dry vertical puncture in the tire tread, and not within 1" of the sidewall, they'll make any "liability reasons" excuse why they can't patch it. After all, they're a tire store. Their aim is to sell you tires. Nature of the beast.

For plug kits, really it's all about vulcanize or not vulcanize IMO. I'm not sure how it works, but all of Safety Seal's plugs are supposed to be self-vulcanizing and physically bond with the tire once installed, I guess traditional plugs stay put based on the pressure of jamming them in?

And I'm a nationalistic mofo, so I'm always going with the company putting out the produce that's American made. Although, now they were acquired a couple years back, I'm not sure if everything is still American made.

Safety Seal does have brick colored plugs also, I can't recall if mine are brick or black.

My oem price list is just a good reference for negotiation. Insurance will always lowball right of the batt because 90% of people accept whatever they say.

Im doing all the work and will be sourcing the parts. I have no problems with used oem or quality aftermarket parts. Just planning ahead to make sure Im made whole on the deal.

 

A long travel rig would be fun but not practical for my needs. I would have to build another truck for the camper. I've got too many projects as it is and I like to spend time outside the shop too!

 

That’s the one thing that scares me about our trucks. I’m pretty sure there was some poor guy back in 1979 who ended up with a total loss on his practically worthless (at the time) 1955 Chevy Bel Air.

 

I keep the $10 Slime version of this from Walmart. Patched many a tire with never a problem. Always go to town with the rubber cement. Even the ones that say they don’t need it. With the tire on the vehicle I rotate the tire out and up to about 2 o’clock or so position. Deflate, ream, prepare plug with lots of goo, insert, pull insertion tool, let dry a minute and cut the excess plug off. Re-inflate and roll out.

 

Insurance uses specific vendors for pricing to get the lowest prices. They also never write a complete estimate until the vehicle is disassembled due to hidden damages.

I deal with this mess on a daily basis dealing with insurance companies on collision repair. They don't really take any pricing on parts from the consumer in to consideration because they are looking for the lowest price possible.

You can absolutely try, but I wouldn't get your hopes up.

I've got the same kit. Probably patched 20 tires with it. Only one that didn't work as 3 plugs jammed in a UTV tire where it got punctured by a stick.

 

That sucks! My toyo at2 tires have probably 25,000 on them and have a ton of tread left. As far as the rotations go, I prefer to do my own. After getting new wheels even more so, but needed it done this summer and couldn't do it due to carpal tunnel surgery so let DT do it...yup scratched up 2 wheels and left perfect circles around the hub then claimed there was no way it could've been done by them..lesson learned. Their insurance paid but what a damn headache.
