Anybody know if I can swap an Elocker from a 2000 4 Runner to a 2006 Tundra? Trying to find a cheap way to get a locking rear diff. Thanks!

2WD or 4WD would help folks give you fuller info.

Looks like they use a 8” rear diff, ours is a 8.4 bridged setup. So I’d say no

4runner is 4-link. Tundra is leaf spring. No direct drop in swap.

The 3rd member will require notching/welding/machining where it bolts in. It can be done but is a royal pita. Plus you'll need switches, control module and wiring.

Shoot, what's the cheapest way to get a locking rear diff? Or is an LSD good enough?

    Cheapest? ^ see above.

Next would be finding a used OEM lsd diff and swap it.

Third would be something like a powertrax no-slip or similar locker that installs in place of the OEM spider gears.

If it's mostly for snow an LSD (clutch or torsen) is a better idea. A locker will send the rear end all over the place.

E-lockers are pretty impressive. I'd skip the lunchbox lockers if its a DD. Did 4x4's come without lsd? Might just need to rebuild what you've got.

Are the OEM limited slips even worth rebuilding? In my searching i haven’t found the rebuild parts or pricing on the clutch plates for them.

I was wondering the same the other day. I’m pretty sure one of the new dudes who posted this past week has worn out LSD and is looking to fix chatter by overhauling his whole driveline. Any shop or wrench worth their salt would know it was chatter immediately if they test drove it cold. But it just led me to the inevitable “what will I do when that time comes?” question. I think I’d be tempted to peel the sticker off and go with something else.

4x4s did indeed come without them. Mine doesn’t have it. Part of the “Limited” package. I’ve always joked it meant limited options. No keyless entry. No LSD. Manual passenger seat. No climate control. Weak ass 6 speaker radio. C’mon Toyota

Wait …. Did any 1GT ever come with a power passenger seat? I’ve never seen that. Not that I’d ever want it, one of the kids would probably find a way to damage my amp. But I’ve never seen that option.

And just to be clear, the 2000 Limited AC 4wd 4.7 TRD OR package was the highest optioned most equipped Tundra offered. There were no platinums or higher trims. And it didn’t have keyless entry……

I added a keyless entry kit I bought on eBay for $14 about 14 years ago. It’s worked flawlessly. $14 Toyota. $14…….

Your 2002 is blessed with many features that my “launch edition” did not have. I do have the trans cooler and the DRL (which was promptly unplugged).

Don’t believe there is an OEM for the 2000 Tundra. Maybe the RS3000 stuff which I guess they used as the OEM. I just got some crappy no name keyless with two remotes. Has an LED indicator I mounted in the gauge bezel surround so it’s visible from the drivers window. Wired the parking lights to blink when you lock and unlock. It’s actually capable of more, just have to add the relays to the output channels. One of the best bang for the buck mods I’ve ever done on the truck. Never a hiccup with it.

Shocking, but good info. I’d be curious who the manuf’er is. I know you said it was generic crap, sometimes quality stuff got whiteboxed, and the only way to tell is checking the PCB for markings, the brain box for markings, or use the FCC ID on the fob to trace back to FCC’s doc submission. (Latter is usually pretty effective)

Audiovox has consistently gotten a lot of shit over the years, and while I used to talk a lot of smack about them bitd while flexing on other name brands, they've never put out shit quality (just had awful package designers). Stacked up against today's globalized penny-pinching market they churned out solid quality, and I'm not at all surprised you've had a good experience. They were always better than budget brands like Realistic or BOSS.

Audiovox (now Voxx) bought Code Alarm not long after your truck was sold, Code Alarm puts out quality auto add-on products still today. Voxx has some pretty big names rolled under them at this point ... Pioneer, Audio Research, Klipsch, and I'm sure there's more. I don't recall what their relationship to Gentex is, but I know there is one, and Gentex is and has been the largest provider of OEM multi-function rearview mirrors for a couple of decades now.

But you are getting near that 15yr mark that's pretty classic for units like that to fail, at least in the SE USA. PCB cracks/trace shorts, solder joint fails, cap fails (where used) being the bigguns.

...but are the ring and pinions the same size? Or maybe my question should be, will our 8.4 R&P fit onto/into a 4runner Elocker 3rd member?
