I think you are missing the point. This thread came about because of many reports of blown engines. Unless this was rare, the rating would definitely not be "excellent". That's all I'm saying.

Agree, and that was what I said in my discussion about it here. But it's "excellent" for at least a year or two is all we know. That's not a stamp of reliability moving forward. When someone shows up and does a great job at something once, that's not someone you would label as reliable necessarily. When they do it year after year, then that person would be considered reliable. We don't have enough data to say these trucks will all self destruct within 100k miles because we don't have many 100k mile 22s and 23s to know that. We also don't know if these trucks will last 300k miles with few problems which is the expectation for Toyotas.

Of course not... it's just an indication that this issue is not as widespread as it may appear.

I've had a couple of cars that did have substantial engine problems by design. Mid-2000's Porsches had an intermediate shaft that the cams ran on that could fail. Interference motor and the engine was done. You can google Porsche IMS/RMS. Years later there is data and it was 6% of the cars failed in warranty. Even without the social media firestorm we have now that amplifies everything, it was a huge deal at the time and continues to be. On Porsche forums you would have guessed the failure rate at 70%. Even at that rate, there was never a NHSTA recall or even warranty extension. The point being, I doubt the failure rate on the Gen3's is material. When it goes bad systemically, you know in a hurry.

This just popped up as soon as i got on FB. Poor guy barely got 100 miles out of his used 2022. Wonder if the previous owner knew something was up and dumped it.. Either way previous owner turned it in at the spot on perfect time ha

As a paying member of Consumer Reports, I’ve taken part in many surveys.
I just recently completed a survey on my former 2009 Murano. Vehicle was sold in 2016. Their data is dynamic and always evolving.
Anyways, each component of a vehicle has a mean time before failure rate and naturally it takes time to gather accurate data; longer time, greater accuracy.
Reminds me of the Dodge Ram commercial where they say it’s rated #1 in “initial Quality”. I know many Ram owners that had the new truck cock-swagger, but by year two they wanted to burn the fucking thing.
Just making the point that consumer report data can be an early indicator of future problems. Naturally, new vehicles break components less than older ones. This doesn’t mean we should disregard the statistical anomalies that appear early in the lifecycle of a new product.

Wow. Wonder if that previous owner is on the forum.

Seems that these failures come on pretty suddenly. I doubt he knew something was up.

Don’t have one yet. Still dealing with my 2018 Tacoma and a fender bender that happened over a year ago... But I can see light at the end of the tunnel there!

Before you ask I’ve only owned Toyotas. Learned on a manual first gen Tacoma when I was 8. Sold it when I was 28. Have had my 3rd gen (Tacoma) since then. That’s it. No other brands.

So if anyone is a Toyota fan boy it’s me. Just wanted to get ahead of you there!

You know what it feels like to get lost going to India, and insist you found India even though it isn’t India, and claim your trip was successful?

I also know this feeling every time I go to the grocery store to find some item my wife wants me to get on the way home from work.

Your memes are solid though, well curated and generally of the highest quality.

It’s all good. Last I checked, you didn’t have to verify the generation of your truck in order to post in any forum.
