Towing MPG

Yep, wind resistance is a big factor. Towing a full size TT is like towing a big brick.

 

I got 14mpg towing my pop up when I had it, moved up to a travel trailer and I'm at 10.3, this past weekend I was able to squeak out 11.

 

Towing 32' toyhauler, 7100 lbs dry weight and 9900 GVWR. I avg 8 mpg on the flat and 6 in the hills, regardless of whether the trailer's empty or loaded. There's a reason why I upgraded to the 46 gal Transferflow tank.

 

6 inch lift and 35”s pulling 3000 pounds fully loaded, 9-10 mpg.

 

I get 10 mpg stock 60-65 mph
200 mile to 20 gallons
Hit some hill I drop to 8

 

I get about 7 to 9 mpg pulling my trailer.

 

First time towing with mine yielded ~11 mpg (93 oct. non-ethanol) running 75-80 mph for 130 miles on 4 lane with rolling hills.





My previous 2012 n/a averaged around 10 mpg pulling the same load, but obviously didn't pull it as effortlessly.

 

I pulled a truck back from outside of Cleveland Ohio back to Clinton Tennessee for a friend of mine and got 12 mpg.Dual axle trailer was probably at least 1500 lbs. and the truck was a 2001 Toyota Tacoma extra cab 2 wheel drive.I ran between 70 and 80 miles per hour there and back.Lots of hills in Tennessee going up 75 north.I was really surprised! 4:30 gears with 305/ 55/20 nitto ridge grapplers.I raced a Chevy Duramax up a long hill coming back and he was pulling a 12 ft enclosed trailer.I was all over him and then passed him before we got to the top. Black smoke was pouring out the exhaust.my buddy was really surprised.I wouldn't have done that but when he went by me ,he covered me in diesel smoke!

 

I just towed (Lund Impact 17') from Minneapolis twin cites metro to Devlin, Ontario and got 14MPG using Tow haul mode and S5 the entire time. I have a Borla cat-back (same as TRD Pro) and stock intake/filter, Bilstien 6112's @ 1.9" and Coachbuilder +2 shackles. Tires are 275/70/18 Generals

 

We love it, great quality, light weight towing..
I really liked the Nest, but wasn't available in 2017, so went with the 19' Flying Cloud.

 

I average 8mpg when towing my 26 foot travel trailer.
2.5"/1" lift with 295/70/18 tires

 

Off-topic: how do you like those GoRhino bed bars?

 

TBH, aside from aesthetics, it’s pretty worthless. It’s made well and looks cool so I am happy with it but there are cheaper ways to get a lightbar up high.

 

Love the honesty! Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking: we had them in the 80's, but there was no practical reason for them.

What do you have for your rear suspension? Did you use the +2 to level your truck?

I plan to keep the factory rake. What do you think of this setup?
I plan to do 6112s in front @1.9”, 5100s in the back, +3 shackles and firestone ride-rites. I plan to also add a 1/4 shim on the driver side to get rid of the lean.

 

Are you guys using tow mode? I towed my buddies camper when we went hunting. Found that tow mode was too much, his camper probably only weighed 3000 lbs. at most. Cant remember mpg.

 

Im kind of wondering that myself. My camper is only 3800-4000lbs fully loaded. Dont really think Tow Mode is needed to tow it and wondering if it is a waste of gas to use it.

All these guys claiming they get 10 plus mpg towing with 35s and lift? I have a 2018 6’ lift and 35s. I’ve never seen above 12.5 since I’ve got my lift. I’ve never seen above 9 towing anything. I think a lot of people on this site are in denial.

They probably just drive slower than you. I can get 19 unloaded with 285/75R18 LTs. Keep it under 65, and let it slow down a bit on hills instead of revving to keep speed.

 

I know this is old but wanted to weigh in on the Airstream Sport. We have a 2019 22FB and the platform is great, The trailer is so simple to work on since if it a rather basic one. The weight is 3,634 lbs dry and has a tongue weight of about 500 lbs so easy for the Tundra's to handle without blowing out the payload.

The other advantage is that the 22FB is narrower so it doesn't need huge mirrors to see the sides of the trailer. My Sport has a been lifted about 4 inches and still handles great. Bad news is they stopped making the narrower platform in 2019. Now all the Bambis are 8' wide compared to 7'-4" wide Sport 22FB.

There is a classified section on airforums.com that could be a good source to find a good Airstream.

 

9mpg towing this at 65mph this weekend. 5.29’s with 34” tires on the tundra and doesn’t like to be in 6th so it stays in s5. Bit ridiculous it’s so low but it is what it is. At least I’ve got the 38gal tank.

 

Get 8.5-9 pulling this. In total right at 5,000 lbs., 500 lbs tongue weight. Pulls nice and straight. Disc brakes both axles on the trailer so it stops decent, too.

 

Drove from NE San Antonio down to Corpus Christi and back, about 160 miles each way. Averaged 6.2mpg there and 5.7mpg on the way back. This was towing our jayco 264BH.
I am on 37s, have 5.29 gears, 46 gal LRA tank, and a lot of other weight in the truck.
I used to average 8mpg on 295/70/18s and stock gears.
All fluid temps stayed under 200 while going 70-73 mph, trans temps are the two 190's

Yes, I tow in S4. If I tow in S5, the engine load goes up to 90%+ and the temps go up 10-15 degrees.
For a while I was still running the 295/70/18s with 5.29s, with that setup I could run S5.

 

Boat looks like it should be more then 500 lbs heavier then mine. Champion 2200 Bay with 200 Mercury. 95 gallon gas tank. 4650 on Cat scales with 1/2 tank of gas. I have 3 group 29 - 31 AGM/flooded cell batteries. I get 10 to 11 mpgs. For those with disc brakes on a boat trailer check your brakes yearly. I had a caliber sticking. Easiest way is to check for heat on rotor. Mine was showing 180 degrees with IR thermometer.
