If it were mine I’d pop that panel off and sand from the back side to create some clearance.

for the first few months i didnt have this issue, but now since its a lot warmer here, i am starting to see the rubbing on our dec-2022 build platinum (picked up feb-2023). feb-mar 2023 was still winter for us so i didnt see any rubbing. the last 2 months the rubbing has now put a noticeable white area around the 2 bottom corners.

anyone heard of any resolution on this? i know there is probably more than just us in this thread with this issue. if anyone gets a 24, can you keep an eye on this and see if this happens or did they resolve it?

My 2023 1794 has about 1/32" gap between the "spoiler" and the tailgate. No rubbing, so far.

But I'm not a fan of the tailgate design, however. I live 7 miles from the nearest paved road. The spoiler collects a lot of dust behind it. When I wash my truck, it drips muddy water down the tailgate for hours afterwards. I always have to wipe the tailgate off a second time when everything dries completely. First world problem, I know, but still irritating.

My dealer is waiting for Toyota to approve the repair on my '22. They took pics and got a quote from the body shop and I am patiently waiting for them to call me to bring it in. Repainting the tailgate and insulating the top piece better is the plan once approved.

I have a 2023 Platinum with 2,000 miles and it's doing the same thing. Apparently, it's a common issue.

I have the same issue with my truck and I'm trying to get it resolved under warranty. After getting the runaround from the dealership, I had to contact Toyota Customer Care several times in oder to get any assistance. Resolution is still up in the air and will provide an update when I have one.
Dealer is now taking my truck to a dealership with collision repair to have the tailgate painted. I don't know what else they plan on doing to address the issue, but I'll update as soon as I have more information.

So I ended up getting this fixed by my local dealer under warranty. They had no problem doing it for me. Basically just got it repainted and they put a shim under the top piece so it wasn't rubbing anymore.

Sorry, I didn't get a chance to. I can ask what they used next time I'm there.

Just dropped mine off at the dealer and pointed out this issue. I mentioned the shims and also that I would prefer touch up in that area over a whole repaint. Will report back on their decisions.

This may be far fetched but worth a look - do all of us with paint wear issues have tonneau covers? I do. Wondering if the pressure or weight pushing down on gate, possibly caused the issue? I took mine off today before taking it to the dealer.

I don't have a cover. The problem is that the piece is plastic and when it warms up the plastic expands which causes the rubbing.

Have 2023 Platinum Blueprint Hybrid, 6 months old, and just turned 12K miles. Checked after reading this forum and mine has rubbed on left side of release handle. Just added BlackFlip MX 4 last week, so rubbing occurred prior to tonneau cover. Will talk to dealer next week about this.

I didn’t spend the money to just swap out stuff.
23 Pro with 2500 miles and no paint wear at that spot.

Picked mine up from dealer today. Thank you @Tundraaa3 for pointing out the other areas by the closing area/top of tailgate. It also have paint worn there. They took pictures and will get back to me with a factory decision. Photo below. Here's the kicker, I went over to the new lot after picking mine up and what do you know - a brand new platinum (grey color)with the wear already showing... Someone's gonna have some tailgates to paint.

The tailgate "spoiler" is just a dumb design. Not only does it cause the paint chipping issue, but it's also a damn dust collector. Every time I wash my truck it drips dirty water for hours afterwards. I hate the damn thing.

Instead of just forming the tailgate out of one piece of sheet metal, they stick a trouble-prone plastic add-on, then deal with the inevitable warranty claims from it. Brilliant.

Dumb design probably. Ultimately its still a badass truck. All things considered I @NewImprovedRon had a good suggestion of applying PFF under the spoiler. I plan to do this once mine is fixed regardless of the fix. Still find it weird that you can find this on brand new units.

A while back I watched a deep dive video from the tundra chief engineer who said the tailgate spoiler was added to keep dust, leaves, etc from blowing back into the cab when the rear window is rolled down.

Glad I found this thread, here I was thinking that I was doing something wrong when closing the tailgate or user error, but I guess not!

Thing is that winter is around the corner and steel + salt don't mix well together :(
