    Hey y'all,

I'll be hauling a tractor cross-country this week with my '03 4.7 AT Tundra and want to monitor transmission temps. I've spent over an hour reading threads here and elsewhere but still have some questions:

    - Is the Torque Pro app available for iOS! There seem to be dozens listed on Apple's dumb app site. If it is, how can I i.d. the correct app?
    - What iOS OBD solution - app and dongle - are you using to monitor trans temps?
    - Alternatively, is there a dedicated OBS code reader that provides trans temp readings? My cheap $25 reader doesn't display the trans temps.

I know this has been covered but I'm not having any luck finding answers to these questions.

    Thanks.

I swore the consensus on this was "You can't get an accurate trans temp" because there's no direct sensor, it was pulling data from other places. I'm not sure how the Scangauge tools are pulling that info.

What I read this morning was that engine oil temp wasn't available but there were two trans temp sensors available, one for the torque converter and one for the trans oil pan temp. I also read that newer Gen1 Tundras with sealed transmissions needed some PID coding to display signals from those sensors.

Post 32 in this thread shows Trans Torque Converter temp:
    https://www.tundras.com/threads/scangauge2-or-ultra-gauge.63631/page-2

This is one of the decent threads on the topic:

I monitor temps just fine using my Torque Pro app and my OBD2 dongle.

It's easier on the 4 speed transmission from what I remember.

Right, but I remember reading the way it's calculating is something not-entirely-accurate, like it's comparing the temp of coolant to oil temp or something along those lines.

Is this not ringing a bell for anyone? It's a super weird thing to be nestled in my brain, I had to've read it somewhere on this forum.

Negative. The only thing I recall is that it was likely checking pan temperature, not the torque converter. Pretty confident I'm getting accurate temperatures.

I think this is what I was thinking of: https://www.tundras.com/threads/obd-reader-will-not-read-the-oil-temp.114059/#post-2937066

But I also remember something specifically about 'trans temp 1' and 'trans temp 2' or similar, where one or the other was sort of muddled together from other values.

^^^ I've been reading so many of these threads today I do recall the calculated temp but I thought that related to engine oil.

Do you use the Torque Pro app on an iPhone or Android?

Follow-up: Are there iPhone compatible OBD Readers that display transmission temp?

    Summary
TBD s of 10/4/20023 - waiting confirmation that OBDLink readers and compatible apps support this.

    - The commonly used TorquePro app is android only
    - BlueDriver is a nice OBD2 reader and app but below are two comms from BlueDriver saying their product cannot be configured with custom PIDs to display transmission temps. The good news is that BlueDriver's tech team confirmed this w/in 12 hours. I recommend them for their quality tech support.
    - The nice OBD Link CX and MX+ may do this with iPhones but this seems to be unproven - please post up if you've used these devices with an iPhone to display transmission temps.

    From BlueDriver 2/20/2109
redtaco2007 to BlueDriver: Not sure if you guys are aware of a competing app called torque or not, but you can add PIDs to the app to pull display options that are not standard to the app. Can we do this with BlueDriever? I'd like to get the trans temperature readings that I can on my Torque app. I had to add a PID to the app to get the sensor readings, but I can't seem to figure out how to do the same in Blue Driver.

BlueDriver: We are working out legal and safety agreements before we could implement that

redtaco2007: ah. ok. Any plans to add the trans temperature readout capabilities for the Toyota Tacoma?

BlueDriver: Unfortunately transmission temperature is not part of the OBDII standard live data set and is not currently supported by BlueDriver. We will be looking in to adding manufacturer specific live data support in the future after we've completed implementing enhanced code support for most major manufacturer

    Hi Brandon,
I have a BlueDriver OBD2 device and app. It’s a great product! Is it possible to add a custom PID to the app to read the transmission temp sensors on my 2003 Toyota Tundra with a 4.7 V8? This is something that others have done using the Torque Pro app.
I can provide more details if needed.
    Thank you!
    Jim

Hi Jim, no unfortunately not currently. Potentially in the future. For more information regarding transmission temp specifically: transmission temperature is not part of the OBDII standard live data set and is not currently supported by BlueDriver at this time, however we are currently preparing a release with transmission temperature for Toyota. There is no ETA or a list of what manufacturers will follow.
New features are added in order of demand, if you have a free moment we would love it if you could fill out a brief survey at bluedriver.com/atftemp to help us prioritize and plan future additions!
    Thank you, all the best,

I'm pretty sure this is absolutely possible with the MX+ and OBDLink app. If I wasn't under the weather, I'd totally test it.

What’s this tractor and trailer setup weigh? Max towing for your truck is around 7100#. Do you have an external trans cooler? Be sure to turn the OD off while towing anything of substance. The 03 has the upgraded planetary gear set and should do fine.

OBDFusion is by far the best iPhone app.

It works really well on newer trucks that are primarily CAN systems.

I assume 2006 is mainly single wire communication via KWP2000.

Do you know the communication protocol being used here?

We’re new to the Tundra world…. Sorry, but loving this darn thing!
1.) How to verify an external trans cooler?
2.) How to turn the OD (overdrive? ) off???

External or auxiliary transmission cooler would be mounted on the front of the radiator on the passenger side.
The button on the side of the column mounted gear selector is the OD on/off button.
    How big is this tractor??

2,400 lbs for the trailer (7K GVWR tandem axle), 2,900 lbs for the tractor (1986 JD 855 with bucket, mower and blade) so about 5,300 lbs. The Tundra has the trailer pkg so it has the stock external trans cooler. Thanks for the tips and check-in on the weight.

The trailers has brakes on both axles and I'll be installing a Tekonsha proportional brake controller today. No WDH but in some trial runs it's worked pretty well.

Dead stock with oem 16" starfish wheels. We'll see how long that lasts. :) Topper of unknown origin.
Yeah, below is a link your very helpful post on the OBDLink products. For some reason my brain stalled and I thought they weren't iPhone compatible, or at least I thought the MX+ wasn't iPhone compatible so I skipped it. I've sent an e-mail to OBDLink asking them if customer PIDs can be added.

Thanks for the tip on a good iPhone compatible app. Wading through apps on the apple App Store is brutal.
