This is clearly for discussion only, as some may have more experience in this field then I do...this occurred this morning at my residence. How and what would you have done differently?

...dogs woke us up barking at the front door...I grabbed one of the firearms and head down stairs to investigate.....as I look through the peekhole, I noticed an adult male outside of the door, trying our door handle....

I told the wife to stay upstairs, grabbed the phone and contacted 911, while pointing the firearm at the door and watching his movements via shadows until PD arrived....(2mins in the snow..)

PD contacted the individual and it was an older adult male who suffers from Alzheimer's....apparently, this guy wonders about every snow fall and has done this in the past....damn lucky for him he didn't gain access...

If you're in my household, I make it a point to protect those inside...we live in a decent/nice area...the house was still armed, so if there was a second and they attempted the basement or another entry, the alarm would have sounded...I would like to think that if said individual entered the premises, and I ordered him to stop and he continued; then I would have eliminated the threat...CO "make my day" law is worded as such that u have to prove the trespasser had intentions to commit other crimes then what they already did (trespassing) ...so, if he refuses my commands to halt (especially at gun point) then I presume he's there to assault my wife /kids and that won't happen if I'm there and can stop him....The wife was in tears upstairs shaking and had access to additional firearms if needed....I thought someone's life was going to end this morning....he's lucky he stopped otherwise it may have turned for the worse...this was a big eye opening for me on how important drills are....The wife and I have discussed scenarios before and one of them was acted out accordingly last night ...if u don't have a plan, come up with one.

Clearly calling the police before doing anything else was the best decision in this situation. Being armed for protection and having a plan is crucial, but its always better to call 911 1st before engaging if at all possible. That way if something goes down the police know they were responding to a home invasion from the get go vs that guy in detroit a couple of months ago trying to explain why he shot an unarmed woman on his front steps after the fact. Even though it was a scary situation I'm glad the old man got help, he could have easily frozen to death or worse if he got into your house.

    Dear Commander Zabroksi,

I'm writing to you to commend your employee, Police Officer Mike Kippes. At around 0400 hours, on January 4th, 2014 my wife, Carmen and I were awoken by one of our dogs who were aggressively barking at the front door entrance. After checking the exterior of the property from the second story loft, I secured my firearm and approached the front door in attempt to get a visual of the activity via the door peak hole. I noticed an adult male was at the front door and was attempting to gain access into our residence by fidgeting the door handle.

At that time, I contacted 911 and advised dispatch of the crime in progress and that I am armed. Your dispatcher assisted me by keeping me in a calm manner as I advised her of the status updates of the alleged suspect and my whereabouts in the residence.

Approximately three minutes into the call for assistance, I heard the engine sound of the Crown Victoria approach my residence to which I secured the firearm after observing the marked Thornton Police vehicle enter, and make contact with the subject in question.

Officer Kippes response time was swift, considering the current snowy conditions. Officer Kippes did not hesitate to contact the individual and immediately secured him in the vehicle and debriefed me on the subject. Officer Kippes was extremely professional, sympathetic and was able to answer all questions I had pertaining to the incident.

Officer Kippes response time and professionalism to the incident is an example of the professionalism law enforcement agencies strive to achieve. I have seen and worked with other Police Departments representatives who cannot match Officer Kippes diligent, professional, and friendly manner.

Fortunately, my wife Carmen and I have discussed scenarios as such in the past in case a crime such as this incident was to occur, and the plan came into hand.

Please relay our thank you to Officer Kippes, and thank you to Chief Nelson for having him with the Thornton Police Department.

    Best Regards,

    Sean Anderson

I'd have done the same thing... you come on my property (sense we're not in a neighborhood, being on the property is almost the same as being in the house) and i'm gonna be on alert. Callin 911 was definitely the best choice and it sounds like everything worked out well.

It did. I'm glad things didnt turn for the worse...just glad we had a plan in place that assisted with self control from me wanting to grab the shotgun and blast through the front door

Rebuilt engine, painted it bright green and hand-polished the valve cover. Lots of stickers.
Sounds like you definitely did what was best, by calling 911 first. Definitely commend you on being ready with the firearm too.
Only an idiot would try to get in my house. 7 people, multiple weapons, and at least one of us is awake at all times due to work schedules and Mom's inability to sleep. They'd be done as soon as they got in the door.
