Got a buddy that will wrap my chrome side mirror caps.
Said it's better to remove them to wrap around the complete edge.
How tricky is it to remove just the chrome caps on these trucks?
    TIA.

It’s pretty easy, just remove the mirror glass (it pulls off) then you’ll see 5 or 6 tabs that you can release with a flathead screwdriver. You’ll probably break a tab or two but it’s no big deal. When removing mine, I broke one tab on each cap pulling them off, but they still clip in securely. You can check out the 1AAuto video on mirror removal for our trucks to see the process visually.

    Thank You Sir.
Glad I posted instead of going out there & trying to pry / pop them off.
    Much appreciated.
Will report back if I go for it.

Spot on. Last summer I bought a roll of Chrome wrap and pulled my caps and wrapped them. It worked out very well and was super easy to accomplish. You're gonna love the way it looks...

Talked to my buddy . . . he remembered doing his Gen 1 Tundra . . . said it was a little sketchy with the potential to break the mirror, and the tabs on the back.
He's just going to do them in place and use a little primer-prep around the edges to minimize pull-back.
It'll be matte-black over the chrome and said I may see a tiny little bit of the chrome if you get up close and look for it . . . no biggie for me. I don't want to be on a parts hunt for broken mirror pieces over something cosmetic. Plus I can yank it off in a year or so if I don't like it.

It can be a PITA to pop the mirror off. It's best to tape the glass before removing. I had to swap out one of mine after someone/something smashed my passenger side. Here are the OEM paper instructions from Toyota I posted in the 'What'd You Do' thread many moons ago: https://www.tundras.com/threads/wha...t-gen-tundra-today.2558/page-678#post-1820473

I think that reply also includes a link to Sue's video for removal, and other tips. Check it out.

Sometimes if you heat tabs on parts, they're less prone to snapping off at removal time....

Fair warning...... you may not be happy with the results if you don't wrap the edges over the cap. That stuff will shrink and with out the edge to wrap around, it'll be a pain in the neck to keep the wrap tight and secure to the mirror cap.

I removed my drivers side pretty easily with patience and this plastic tool. No broken tabs

Did you manage that without removing the mirror glass?

Yes. Lightly separated enough with a small flat head screwdriver enough to allow penetration of the plastic trim tool. Then slowly moved it around in a circle to release the clips.

Nice! You're the 1st person I've seen show this is something possible to do.

I guess the next question is ... are you replacing, color-matching, or ??

Here is the post from my thread doing it. A couple pictures down it shows the cap side and mirror side and can see where the little tabs are. I used a metal pick with a 90* tip to get around and bend back the tabs. I bought mirrors off ebay with matching caps and basically broke the chrome caps off my mirrors and broke the other mirrors so I could use the color-matched caps. So maybe don't do that, but maybe this will help.
