First oil change.. questions.

I already finished but had a few questions:
1. A gasket came off the old filter should I have put that on with the new one?
2. How do I clean this skid plate?
3. How do I get this oil I spilled everywhere off the driveway?(I wiped it best I could)
4. When I checked the oil before changing it, it was about half inch or so above the full line, after running it after the change it’s in the same spot.

There should be an gasket that came off with the old filter. The new one comes with one. If you bought a Toyota brand filter it comes pre greased. If aftermarket, you should apply some oil to the gasket before install.

always ensure the old gasket came off before installing new filter. Double gaskets will leak.

As far as cleaning the skid, just wipe it with a rag.

the driveway may require a pressure washer with some degreaser? I’m sure someone on here has some tips for that.

 

Yes I took off old gasket. And bought a Toyota filter per @shifty`. Dropped the filter and got some dirt on it so I wiped it down, and put some new oil on it.
Was just curious if there’s some wire brushing involved with the plate.
And thanks I’ll look for a degreaser.

There’s also quite a bit of dried battery acid in the skid plate. Old battery was leaking a ton. Got that replaced

thinking about putting one on mine next oil change since I don’t go off roading, clearance isn’t a issue.

Should help prevent any accidental spills in the future as you can connect to the hose to a container. Def not needed but so aren’t a lot of things we do to these trucks.

 

Kitty Litter for the driveway. Stomp on it and grind it into it. Let sit and bake, wash away with pressure washer another day.

Still exists? Seek more aggressive tools. Luckily your driveway is concrete and not asphalt like mine, so it can still be salvaged.

 

Brakleen is also pretty effective on small oil spills when fresh. But there's an entire industry dedicated to oil stains on driveways

That said, I keep a sheet of cardboard under my vehicles when doing oil. Spills are inevitable.

 

I've had success with oil spills on concrete by using kitty litter. Just spread it out then rub it around with your foot. The oil absorbs right into it then just sweep it up.

 

Simple Green is a great cleaner for the skid and driveway.

 

While we're talking about the skid plate, why do we need that strip of foam? And why does it cost $78?!!

 

I used pool noodle to replace the foam on dads q45. Still holding up pretty good after 2 tx summers.

 

Brake clean. We clean up everything in the shop with brake clean. We buy it by the 55 gallon drum.

It sure is. Look for the red cap version. With chlorine for super effectiveness.

 

Question, what about cleaning the underneath, such as the frame?
Any special precautions I should take when cleaning parts like this? Gloves/mask? Etc. as stated before there’s dry battery acid everywhere.
I’ll look for brakeleen as well.

 

If you did not take a water hose to the battery area when battery was out, I would remove the battery, it's tray and spray the heck out of the battery area to help remove dry batt acid. No harm will be done unless you get crazy around fuse boxes or engine itself..

As for your comment "about half inch or so above the full line" was that reading taken with engine cold and after oil change same question.

 

After I first noticed it I first replaced the battery then got the engine bay detailed (they took a pressure washer to it)

as far as oil both measurements where within 5-15min after running. Just measured it again(after the truck sitting for a couple hours or so) and it’s about 1/4 between the low and full line. No leaks underneath!

 

Probably same for most but my 04 takes a qt to go from low to full line, when cold/truck on level surface.

 

That’s what I’ve heard. Is 1/4 okay or should add a little?

 

Being martinet type person, I’d personally add at least 1/2 qt if it were mine.

I was able to change my oil without moving the skid plate. I've got the v6, but there was enough room to reach in through the engine bay and get the oil filter off with a filter wrench. Saves a little bit of time.

 

I put puppy pee pads under the Tundra in my driveway before draining any fluids. cheap and absorbent.
