2006 Tundra DC crank no start problem

Alright, I’ve been up and down the forums chasing the threads with info about this, time to ask for help. I’ve got a nice 06 Double cab that I built up with the basic 5100 lift. She ran great until it intermittently died. I replaced all the relays, then I replaced the fuel pump, tested/jumped the resistor, replaced. Some of the wiring….so far I’ve tried everything I’ve read about online. The odd thing is that when cold it will start then die after a few seconds. If I unplug the Maf it will fire and run, the. When I plug the msg back in it continues to run, better then unplugged of course. I replaced the MAF already. I’m guessing it must be an ecu issue of some sort? Unplugging the Maf causing reset some how? I’ve tried the unplugged battery reset multiple times to no avail

 

How many miles?
How long ago was the timing belt replaced?
Any codes active at all?

 

160k timing just did the timing belt at 158k, no codes ever

 

Open the underhood fuse box and check ECU2.

 

Hmmm no ECU 2, ECU-B and EFI NO.2 both good…

 

So I just tried it and it started and died, unplugged maf and it would fire and die immediately, plugged maf in and it runs fine…what the hell

 

What brand maf did you replace it with??

did you unhook your battery at all during this process?

may need to clean throttle body ??

 

ALL ? , that's a lot of shotgun troubleshooting. Care to mention which ones actually.

Given EFI No 1 is also part of the MAF and other circuitry, did you by chance check it closely

What wires in particular and did any have to do with area of MAF ?

Do you possess a VOM(volt ohm meter) so you can make some checks of the MAF area ?

 

We have seen similar issue before when battery gets disconnected or swapped. Ecu must relearn and often times this can cause a similar issue to what you are experiencing.

Also, 2k miles, just about enough time to rub thru the crank position sensor wire if you - as many often do - didn't route its harness properly during timing belt install. Check its harness to make sure the serp belt didn't cut through it.

 

Throttle body is clean, I got a Delphi maf. It ran worse with that (when it ran) than stock. I replaced the fuel pump c/opn and efi relays. I replaced the wire harness (plug) at the fuel pump as it was slightly corroded. I do have a multi meter and can certainly run some checks at the MAF, but I’m a few brain cells short of an electrical engineer and not sure where I would start haha

 

Also replaced crank position sensor ( I did route it wrong but caught it before I ran it and zip tied it out of the way, it’s good

 

You may only use Hitachi MAF0048, which is the OEM equivalent.

I'm not sure what MAF0048 fits. Maybe '05-'06 with VVTi are using a diff't MAF than your '04 and earlier non-VVTi?

MAF0048...it was identical to the OEM 22204-0F010 that was in my 04.

So sorry for the bad advice. I was today years old when I learned that there are many more differences in 05-06 than I had imagined.

You may only use Hitachi MAFxxxx (as suitable for your engine/year)

 

We’ll it’s running. I replaced the MAF (hitachi MAF0035) (actually cheaper then The one I got at Napa, and I get a discount). The fuel pump relay, efi relay, c/opn relay. The crank position sensor. The plug and wiring where it attaches to the fuel pump. Cleaned and tested the fuel pump resistor. After all that I finally decided to buy another oem fuel pump off eBay, dropped the tank and swapped it….and now it’s running. I am not convinced something won’t pop up again (maybe ecm next?) but I’m driving it now. The first time I swapped the pump I used a kit from URD https://urdusa.com/urd-2005-2006-tundra-fuelpump-filter-kit-all-engines/ the second time I dropped the tank, the plug to the pump and the wire harness was slightly melted and there was corrosion on the pins, so I swapped the kit over to another used pump and put it in and it ran for a while, then same problems. I will update if it exhibits the problems again. Thanks for the help!

I remember that now. That does make sourcing stuff a bit tougher. Really though, the truck is running and that's the important part.
