On a six hour trip today. Stopped about 4.5 hrs into the trip. After getting back going noticed it getting warm in the Tundra. Checked all my controls everything seemed to be set correctly. Noted not much air flow out of vents even on High fan. Also noted air that was coming through was not cool. Temp out side was 74 and I had it set to cool to 64. Had the AC on and fan on High. Nothing doing to get that AC to work.

Got to destination and unloaded the truck and talked on phone a while. Went to move there truck and the AC works and the fan blows like crazy?

Any ideas or thoughts on what happened? Appreciate and thank you for your input in advance.

Computers. Some times less is more. Now that everything is computer controlled, something else decides what happens. Glitch? Auto AC mode overriding user input? Hard to say.

Hard to say with your description, but sounds like the "auto" mode was messing with you. Whether it was pressed accidentally or you have the setting saved to activate "auto" mode with start up.

This may not help for your application, but then again it might. I used to have an issue exactly as you are describing in my 4runner. Turns out that my evaporator core was freezing over. If I was on a longer road trip with AC blowing cold for a long time it would happen. I normally would just flip the AC off for a few minutes and let it defrost and it would work again and the fan would blow strong again.

I ended up having a leak in the evap core and the problem went away once I replaced it and recharged the system.

It would be hard to imagine you have a bad evap core, but it definitely sounds like something is freezing over. If it happens again while driving, just turn off the AC for a few minutes and see if it starts working again.

Yup sounds like exactly what the post above said. Happened to me in my old car. Turns out refrigerant was low. Your actual situation may differ.

What would any of that have to do with his brand new truck not having good airflow out of the vents? Think the temp issue and fan speed issue are related together. It’s under warranty, take it to the dealer.

In my situation, it was about 80 with high humidity. My BMW automatically decreased the fan speed. It was barely blowing and blowing warm air even though I had the fan set on high. I stopped for about 15 minutes to get gas, bathroom, whatever. When I got back in the car, the AC was working just fine. Had it checked out, low refrigerant.

For sure dealer should check it out and fix it if the refrigerant is low or evaporator is leaking. If condenser is damaged and leaking, that’s another story.

It does sound to me like a frozen up evaporator. Any puddle under the truck where you unloaded? Could have a plugged up evaporator drain (mud wasps, etc cause weird problems like that…) but if it’s draining and the cab air filter is clean, then a trip to the dealer would be my next move.

The issues are likely related. If the evap core freezes over due to low refrigerant, it will restrict airflow out of the vents. The issue certainly needs to be repaired by the dealer considering the age of the truck, but simply trying to help OP with his question.
