    Hi Forum,

Recently I've been having problems with my ignition lock cylinder so I changed it out with one on Amazon.

Now I can get out of park. my 02 Tundra v6 starts up fine but the gear shift wont unlock and go into reverse or drive.

also the key will not release from the lock cylinder and its a brand new cylinder

    anyone have any suggestions?

note: I made sure the taillights come on when I press the brakes to release the gear shifter. They do. So I know my brake light switch is fine and the fuses are all fine too

First mistake you made was ordering parts on scAmazon or fleaBay, but I suspect you know that already so I won’t harp on it.

First thing is do is remove the scAmazon cylinder, try and get your key out. How many keys do you have? Dealership can re-cut a new key based on your VIN with proof of over shop and ID. Worn key edges have been known to cause ignition cylinder problems; the ignition cylinder isn’t known for otherwise going bad. Granted, sometimes the dealership will make a bad cut, but it’s unusual.

I’d then reinstall the factory cylinder and try again with a new key, personally. Return the scAmazon garbage.

Curious. is the shift lock plunger at the break pedal releasing?

I may not be understanding the full picture.

Neither an old key, nor a new key turns in the old cylinder to start the truck?
So you installed a new cylinder from scAmazon, and it starts the truck, but now you can't take the key out of the cylinder and you cannot shift out of park once started?

    Is this correct?

Just for sake of curiosity, on the removing-the-key-from-new-cylinder, have you attempted to push the key in further, then jiggle it a bit while in the OFF position? I remember one of my older GM vehicles was similar with newly cut keys, specifically. I had to jam the already-inserted key pretty firmly to get there.

Do you ever hear the shift lock release? Hold on, I'll find a pic of where it's located.

Shift lock, I'm quite certain, is on the right in this pic.

Basically, if this plunger is engaged, you cannot use the shift lever at all.

Try pulling down hard on the steering wheel to the left and then the right while trying to turn the key. I occasionally have to do this on my 06 when the steering wheel gets locked in a funky spot.

Have you identified there is something wrong with yours? I wouldn't throw parts blindly at the problem. I also wouldn't take just what your given here and run with it. None of us can see what your dealing with. None of us can test the components out, you have to do that. If you don't think you know how, get some local help from someone who can inspect it with you in person. Just because the brake lights come on, doesn't mean there isn't a brake switch issue. Just because the ignition cylinder is acting wonky, doesn't mean that the shifter problem is coming from the ignition cylinder. Your original problem with the ignition cylinder is unclear. It just stopped working one day? You said it's damaged? Damaged how? The replacement one is OEM? Or aftermarket? I would not trust an aftermarket one. Are you sure it was installed correctly? Is there an issue with any of the wiring going to the ignition cylinder assembly? When you put the key in and turn the truck on, do you feel the "click" when stepping on the brake pedal when trying to shift out of park?

There is a lot of good advice here. To be honest, when mine got stuck, I removed the lock cylinder and removed all of the tumblers and reinstalled. I don’t advertise it (I guess until now), but you can start my truck with a flat head screwdriver or any key for that matter.

EDIT: which is why I was not too worried about it when my only key broke off in the door lock. Thankfully, my tailgate was unlocked and I was able to remove the fuel door lock with ease. I then replaced the 2 door locks with a matching set. One day I will replace the ignition cylinder and have it keyed to the one that I have.

Damage to the wire harness; well I did break something on top of the wiring harness like some plastic thingy cuz it was so brittle it just cracked an I don't know what it's for and that's all that I know of wiring that got damaged on the cylinder

So I took the 2002 Tundra to Daves Auto Center in Centerville Utah.

They fixed the stuck key and other stuck in park issue before in less than 2 seconds.
I did not watch them but they were in and out and it was fixed fast.
They did not charge me and said your welcome

    Amazing

When mine was stuck in park it was the little plunger that contacts the brake pedal. I dapped a little grease on it and pushed it in and out a few times with a screwdriver. Guessing it had a little dirt or corrosion on the chrome.
