3 days back on stock wheels and tires- impressions

So I got my tundra in June 22 and drove it from Mobile, AL to Idaho on the stockers then ripped them off and put on blackhorn bh01 17’s with 35x12.5 Toyo at3’s. This set up weights 11lbs more per corner than stock and looks killer (I think). On Monday I woke up to a flat rear tire and took it in to the shop- had cracked one of the blackhorn wheels and was leaking. Tossed the factory wheels and tires back on and here is what I am seeing/ feeling.

WOW… does 11lbs and rolling resistance make a huge difference. The truck is so much faster, more nimble and brakes like a damn champ. The best way to describe it is going from the non hybrid to the hybrid in terms of speed and acceleration. I’m shocked at the difference, so much so that if I end up keeping this truck I am going to source the lightest 18 or 20in wheels and 275/65/20 tires to run on it for all the time we’re not doing gnarly off-road runs.

mpg has gone up 3mpg in 3 days driving my daily routes. Have to head to slc and back next week for work and interested to see how big of a difference it makes.

Titan 7 makes a forged 20in wheel with the 3rd Gen bolt pattern. If I remember correctly it is a 9in wide wheel, +20, at 25lbs/wheel. There might be something I'm missing about the wheel.

 

Yeah, tire size really seems to affect the mileage on these trucks. I went with only slightly larger tires than stock (275/60R20) and my mileage is only around 17 mpg on the highway, and I drive conservatively. It is what it is, I. guess, but I was hoping. for better.

I've never understood why they don't put a more proportionally correct tire size on the Tundra stock. My wife's 2022 4Runner looks great with the stock tires. I guess it's so they can advertise better fuel economy, but damn those tiny stock tires look silly.

Good insight, but how do you figure you're only 11 lbs difference per corner? Tires alone are 20 lb difference per corner, are your 17 inch wheels 9 lbs lighter than the stock wheels?

 

I plan to do a 275/60/20 with the 3PSF on them for an annual tire, Nitto Terra Grappler G2 for the exact reasons you mentioned

 

Maybe my butt dyno is not calibrated but I took my 37’s off today and put stocks back on and don’t feel much difference in acceleration. Certainly feel it braking.

 

my wheels are 21.5 each, stock are 37.
Stock tires 38lbs- new 65- 27 lbs difference
Stock Wheels 37lbs- new 21.5- 15.5
11.5 lbs more per corner

Funny thing is that I'm still getting only about 11-14 mpg in city, lots of stop and go

 

that kills mpg no doubt, tonight I got stuck in traffic for 40 minutes and it absolutely tanked my mileage from 19 to 16

 

I recently went from 315/70R17 KO2 Raptor takeoffs to 315/70R17 Territory MT’s from a Bronco Sasquatch. The territory’s are still the same diameter but they run more like a 285 in width. They are also 10 lbs lighter than the KO2’s were.

The difference is substantial. I picked up 1 to 1.5 mpg and the truck is quicker, but still have the 35” look. Im pretty close in mpg to my old 275/60R20’s

 

My winter tires are 275/60r20s, and I get 20+ mpg on the highway. Just keep it under 80.

 

This is a great example of how combined weight of the wheel/tire pkg doesn't tell the whole story. You removed a bunch of weight near the axle where it has less effect, and added 27 lbs to the tire, the furthest from the axle. Although the net change of wheel and tire is 11.5 lbs, you removed weight were it has the least effect and added it to where it has the most effect. I did the same with a Jeep and it really shows how tire weight has such a dramatic effect on performance, noticeably in stopping power on my Jeep in which the 37's made the stock brakes dangerous and couldn't engage ABS even on a flat clean surface.

Torque: the amount of force required to exert a rotational acceleration on an object is dependent upon both the magnitude of the force applied multiplied by the distance from the center of mass of the object the force is being applied to.

 

I remember reading from a tuner that the ECU (in the previous generation at least) senses a decrease in wheel speed in relation to throttle position and pulls ignition timing. The wheel speed decreases because of the longer radius of the larger tire combined with the increased inertia from the added weight. Not only is it harder to turn the larger wheel, but the engine also makes less power.

I agree the bigger tires make the truck look so much better, but I am loving the range I can get stock, and stock looks decent when you aren't doing a side by side comparison.

I'd love a bull bar (deer country, last tundra was a victim of a 5 pt buck) and bigger tires, but losing the range is a tough trade-off.

What bar are you running? Did you upgrade suspension to handle it, and did you notice a drop in mileage with it?

 

No idea, finally heard back from Blackhorn after pestering them for 5 days. New wheel will be here in a few weeks- bronze is currrently out of stock. Sending under warranty.

Ive got the C4 fab full protection front bumper. I popped off my roof mounted fly rod carriers (they chew mpg) and am heading to slc today till Friday and will report back on mpg going 80+mph for 300 miles each way. Yesterday I had to run to the burbs and back on the highway and got 19.7mpg with cruise set at 75, not bad!

 

I recently swapped out a set of Ironman M/T for a set of WildPeak AT3 and it made a big difference in the way the truck feels. The tire size stayed the same, but the WildPeaks are 11 lbs lighter per tire. The truck is much more nimble and responsive now.

Made it to slc on stockers and no fly rod vaults, averaged 16.6 mpg for 300+ miles with lots of hills, 2 mountain passes and lots of bad wind. No too shabby, but also not that awesome

 

Not surprising. I have noticed a huge drop in mpg above 70-75. Can't beat physics with a giant brick pushing through the wind...

 

Reviving your old post! How’s your ride? I put on the territory and I feel every bump in the road. No suspension mods just the tires and wheels.

 

I didn’t have any issues with mine. I ended up selling the F150 and buying an Lx570 and bought a new set of the same Territory MT’s for the LX. I liked them better than the KO2’s I had prior.
