I'll be checking out a Tundra this weekend and I was hoping I could get your all's opinion on the frame rust. Here's the picture the dealer has up online. Do you think this rust is manageable?

I'd pass on that. I see a lot of delamination around the frame mounts and someone has taken a lot of effort to cover up and spraypaint stuff.

The long rails don't look bad. It's the joints, nooks, and crannies combined with the cover-up attempts that would worry me.

That last pic alone would make me pass on that truck. Keep hunting for a clean one.

I agree, the 3rd, 6th, and last pic are the most telling/worst.

Yeah, it’s a little sketchy. Looks like someone just slapped a coat of undercoat on it and didn't do anything to really address the existing rust. It’s already corroded through in some areas.

Release the Kracken and walk away.

Eyeball in’ these frames is only step one. Gotta get the hammer out and tap around. Always check the hotspots. Overlap areas like the rear crossmember and spare tire carrier. Body mount areas are also suspect. Wheel well arches and lower cab and door pinches for body rust. This one seems to have some undercoating, not a good or bad thing, but likely covering up some rust. Some pictures make it look like it could be a lot of rust. Even moderate rust that’s redeemable is a no go for me. Ain’t nobody got time for that. Plus all that rusty hardware to deal with when doing any maintenance or upgrades? Pass.

haha, this to me looks like a decent frame. Mine is definitely worse than that, just finished needle scaling the whole framing and sanding, gonna be fluid filming it tommorow. Id say for a almost 20 year old truck thats not bad at all, but yea, maybe take it for a test drive and bring a hammer... then park somewhere nearby, and hammer away under there as much as you can

Dang, I was hoping this would be alright. Thanks for the advice. We've been looking for a good used truck for our move from Kentucky to Oregon next year. Guess I'll probably keep looking.

Are you in KY? We've got quite a few KY members who can help keep an eye out.

I personally feel like that's pretty bad for a KY frame. Don't get me wrong, both @NickB_01TRD and @Tundra2 are in KY and have had their frames replaced under the service campaign/recall, but ...

I would potentially be less-harsh on it, but the fact there's very clear evidence someone was trying to cover up spots with paint, I don't like when I see rust and I also see someone has tried to cover up the extent of the rust.

Yeah, we're in Louisville. Though the truck is in Bloomington IN. Do you think it would be alright/recoverable if it passes the hammer test?

Make sure you don't miss anything, especially around the welds if you do the hammer test. Quite a bit of scaling from what I see. You'd have to address these areas if you decide to purchase it.

Your call, if (A) you personally trust and enjoy dealing with people who hide problems on things they're selling and (B) that's what you want to fight with, knowing where you see rust enough to delaminate steel on the frame like that, the fasteners will be even worse, so maintenance like O2 sensors etc. can and will be a more knuckle-busting experience.

Personally, if you're willing to drive to Bloomington IN to get a truck, if I were you I'd be aiming the same distance south and hunting in and around the Nashville TN area.

    https://nashville.craigslist.org/se...7066&search_distance=150#search=1~gallery~0~0

The top result right now is freaking mint. Frame is spotless. Sadly it's 2WD

If only I had $17,000 to spend. The truck in Bloomington is at 223,000 miles and they're asking $7000 for it.

Understood, I assume you'll want 4WD also given snow etc.

The one I highlighted is overpriced for 2WD and I worry about anything under 120k miles on these trucks. But someone will likely pay $14k-15k for it because there are a bunch of "OMG LOW MILES, I WANT A VIRGIN" people out there who don't understand the issues that go with low mile engines at this age.

Yup about 45 minutes away from me here in Etown. @kentuckyMarksman is in Louisville as well. Good luck on the search. I'm assuming you're looking for double cab only?

Any cab size would work. 4wd is more important. And I can drive manual in theory. I understand how it works and ride a motorcycle, I just don't have actual stick shift experience.

When you get good at it, you can roll back and slowly drive forward repeatedly on the hill to freak the people out behind you.

I highly recommend that you pass on that truck. I'm also in Louisville, I drove to Bloomington in July to look at that exact truck. It's a LOT worse when you see it in person. There is a sizable hole in the driver side of the frame, the bed was filled with all kinds of crap (and a bit rusty too), there was transmission fluid all over the underside of the transmission, and the salesman couldn't get the driver side door shut without lifting the door up a good amount and trying to close it.

I think I may have pictures of the frame hole on my phone still if you're curious.

Man, @Kraken how'd you miss this?

Seriously though, what KM just posted that I'm quoting ... this is EXACTLY what I'd expect to find hidden on a frame like the dealer sent you pics of. And it goes to show you how shady some dealers are! Sent you some semi-bad pics, but left the worst out. It's so blatantly obvious someone sprayed black over that to conceal the orange, too.
