Anyone have a Platinum that changed the 20" to OEM OR wheels and OEM OR tires that wouldn't mind sharing pics of there truck?

Just bought a pre-owned 2021 Tundra Platinum 4WD, Wind Chill Pearl, 15k miles. Want to swap out the 20" for OR 18" and OR shocks and rear sway bar.

Wanted to see what mine will look like. And if you have made that switch, please weigh in on the street ride difference.

    Thanks in advance.

If you're planning on off roading adding a sway bar will be detrimental.

Don't plan on doing any off-roading. Want the 18" for a bigger side wall, better ride yet keep it OEM look and also get opinions of the difference in ride.

I went the other way (18" to 20"). The 18" setup will ride noticeably softer, but also feel more vague in the corners due to the increased sidewall flex. Sway bar will help somewhat with the cornering feel.

Sway bar was biggest change in ride and handling, much flatter in turns. The 18’s give it a more compliant ride than the 20’s.

At the risk of sounding like an ass (I’m not trying to), can you provide photos of a “fairly” normal Tundra off-roading with a sway bar that would otherwise be going further?

While a sway bar (front or rear) can have some negative off-road mannerisms, the positives likely outweigh them for the vast majority of “wheelers”.

Back on topic, the OEM 18” wheels will be great on your truck. The sway bar will most likely be a good thing. The OEM off-road shocks are trash. Marginally “better” than the garbage (I had them too!) that came with your Platinum. If it’s a free trade, sure. Not worth paying for though. Better off to save for some Bilstein if you want to keep cost somewhat down.

Regardless, congrats on your new truck! I’ve had my Platinum since new in 2018. Still love it after 139,000 miles. Watch out hanging around on here though! We will gladly help you spend your money!

I'll try to find photos but when you add a sway bar you lose articulation. The sway bar ties both wheels together which helps when cornering on road but if off road on uneven surfaces if your left wheel is up high on a rock, the right wheel wont be able to drop down due to it being tied to the left wheel.

Edit: Found a video of a Ram demonstrating the difference.

Joe333x and Chad D. Thanks for your comments, but I wont' be doing any off-roading. I had a 2017 Platinum RWD. I put a sway bar on that and it improved handling remarkably. I was also pulling a 6000lb Chaparral boat and my RWD Tundra had no issue even on the steepest ramps that were wet. I would have stayed with RWD but I might get a travel trailer and end up in a few places that require a 4x4 for a brief period. So, putting one on the rear of my newer Platinum 4x4 is a no-brainer.

Now the whole point of the OR wheels was to merely drop down from 20" to 18" and keep an OEM look to it while improving ride quality. My basis for this was a test drive of a Pre-Owned Limited 4x4 with an TRD Off-Road package including the OR 18" wheels and OEM Michelins. Coincidently, the previous owner also had a sway bar. Ride quality was notably better than my 2017 Platinum RWD with 20" wheels, and this sealed my decision.

So just wanted to see pics from others who changed their Platinum 20" to OR 18" :)

Is there something special about the Platinum that you need to see? You could just look at any pictures of a Tundra with the OR wheels.

I think you will like the change and have nothing to worry about. Also, buying tires for an 18" wheel is cheaper than buying for a 20". I was just looking an if I bought Toyo's or K02's it was almost $400 less in an 18" for the equivalent sized 20". Just another added benefit down the line.

RobertD. Thanks for weighing in I agree. I could look at other Tundra's with OR wheels and I have. But most of them have chrome front fascia and more importantly, I would miss out on connecting with other like minded Platinum owners and possibly see other creative add-ons or upgrades. ;)

Regarding tires, I've had great success with Michelins, specifically the LTX M/S. That is my go to and aligns with my style of driving. If I don't switch to the 18s, I will immediately have LTXs put on and sell the Bridgestone's with 15K miles on the.

I had the LTXs on my 2017 Tundra, on my former Acura MDX and have them on my current AWD EX Pilot (18" wheels) which is my daily driver and handled 8" of snow like a boss. But yes, the 18s are a little cheaper, but unremarkably cheaper compared to all the other crap we all add on to our trucks...haha. I think you are right about the 18" looking good.

For all those who are jumping into this thread, a part from the ebay (ie used market), any suggestions where I could source the TRD-Off-road Wheels for a good deal. Don't mind paying for new ones. But want to get best deal i can get.. Thanks
