Changed oil for the first time yesterday - the crappy plastic housing had a couple of chips pieces, so when I got it off I went ahead and bought a metal one to replace it. Used the spring, metal cylinder that came with it, put in new filter and 8 quarts 0w-20. Cranked it up and everything was good - noticed the oil pressure gauge sitting at low and barely moves up when accelerating. Truck has almost 90k miles and stayed in the middle on pressure before. Any ideas of what is up?

Did you use the correct filter for the new metal housing?

I never did this swap with my Tundra. Heard about some people using the wrong filters.

The metal housings come with a short tube inside. You'll need to swap out the long one from your OEM filter housing. Failure to do so could cause the paper filter to collapse causing low oil pressure. Post a pic of your oil cannister please.

Wasn't there a video of a Toyota technician discussing why swapping the housings is a bad idea all around?

There is so much information on this site it's hard to remember it all.

Metal housing is a good mod provided you swap out the long tube. So much misinformation on the internet...

I always performed my own oil changes, so the plastic filter cap was never an issue for this guy.

Topic has been kind of beat to death, the video posted above goes over why you should just stick with the correct cap but of course there is always going to be the few who search for a mod to fix a problem that doesn't really exist. When torqued properly the plastic housing has no issues when over torqued You can have issues getting it off so really the only advantage the metal one has is that you could over tighten it which could actually cause other issues like damaging the threads It screws into. Your particular issue sounds like you're using the wrong tube since if you got an OEM metal cap It doesn't have the correct size tube in it because it's not meant for our trucks.

I just didn't want to risk engine oil starvation. Used 100k mile motors are still pretty damn expensive for the 5.7L.
