My ‘06 2wd DC has had clunk for a while, which sounds very familiar to this from reading forums. However, I cannot see any cracks in crossmember. Should I purchase a chassis Ear, or possibly remove crossmember and inspect closely for cracks. I’m thinking the cracks, if present, are on the top of the crossmember, which is not easily seen from under the truck…..

1st things 1st, did you check the tightness of all 4 fasteners?

    So yes…and no.

I checked for tightness, but not with a torque wrench. I have since purchased a proper wrench, my old one was in inch pounds and didn’t go high enough, and will re-test bolts with correct torque when I get home….

I mean if they were tight-tight, like, even halfway as tight as you'd torque your lugnuts, I'm sure it's fine.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't loosen up the mount bolts, use a floorjack with a 2x4 to lift the transmission 1/4" off the xmember, and whip it out to inspect, but it may be that the xmember lifts out, I'm not sure. Don't quote me on any of this, check the service manual first, or TSB instructions.

I swear someone on here had a trick for finding cracks in steel for cases like this. And I remember thinking, "Ah hell, that's genius". But my aging-ass brain can't remember for the life of me who said it or what was said.

When exactly are you hearing the clunk? When shifting out of park in R or D? When already in gear and stopping, or from a dead stop at a stoplight? Does it happen shifting back and forth from R to D with the brakes fully applied? A few more details may point to other possibilities.

Definitely at very low speeds. Kinda when getting on the gas and or brakes. No clunk from F to R shifting.
Hear it in the 5mph-10mph range.

I don't know what it's the xmember then. It may be. I would expect it to happen in cases of momentum mostly. i.e. switching from a dead stop to rolling, or at the end of firm braking event. But I'm not the expert.

Went under truck to check tightness of bolts again to find out all 4 were missing.

    Well, there is your problem.

The part number, if you want to go OEM, is in the TSB document.

Consider using at least a blue threadlock when you reinstall, and for best results, torque to the factory spec given inside the TSB document.

Thx. Was gonna ask about the threadlock.

Should I Jack up the transmission a bit, or at least take some weight off Xmember to get the holes centered. They are a little offset on holes so not sure bolts will start. Or just torque down if I can get them started.

Sorry for delay, I realized I failed to back down off the top mount of my rear shocks after I lifted. The bushings were squashed!

Use your best judgement. I'd probably try and tap at the mount with a rubber mallet first, or with a hammer and a piece of wood if you don't have said mallet.

If it's not shifting, if you do choose to jack up the trans, use a block of wood between the jack and trans. But you may also be able to loosen a couple of bolts on the ends of the xmember and tap it to get it to move also.

Not 2 days ago. Not sure how long ago. Maybe 8 months.
    I tend to procrastinate.

Ah I see said the blind man. Lol.

Mine also clunks when coming to a stop and when taking off. Sometimes it's a second or three after I've completely stopped that it clunks. Slip yoke needs greasing I think. All of my xmember bolts are gudentite.

You're 2WD though, I don't think you have any zerks anywhere on the driveline, do you?

Nope. From all I've seen around here no zerks in the 2wd model.
