Supply and demand are definitely at play, and as long as the 'market' is willing to pay the high prices, they will stay high. The best defense is patience (what part of the country you are in can also make a difference). I hunted around for several months but was able to find my truck on a smaller lot within a couple of hours drive. It had been sitting for a couple of months, and I was able to pick it up for ~5K under KBB.

It’s 100% men. I read things on here about how people can’t stand how long the Tundra (and Sequoia, 4Runner, 200 series etc) went without an update. One forum member just the other day said he didn’t like the 2nd gen Tundra because of the older interior styling, but now that the 3rd gen has a big screen and new looking interior, he loves it.

A truck is supposed to be a tool. Do we need this tool or not? Our ancestors hunted woolly mammoths with crude spears, and here we are cosplaying tough guy while complaining about seat comfort or the way a truck’s interior looks.

Not just a long time...the rest of their lives. The only way prices truly go down is for a major deflation event, which of course brings its own problems. I didn't want to spend this much on a pickup, and kept talking myself out of it for that reason. When I finally decided to just do it my desired build was under $67k, but that exact config now is over $69k. Darn near $3,000 higher just since the beginning of this year. Prices will always keep going up.

This probably will be my last truck and it makes me sad. I fall into the group that doesn't NEED a truck. I use it as such maybe 12 times a year, and most of those use cases could be done with a SUV.... but they're getting expensive too. I was happy with the $38k for my 2007, talked myself out of $54k for a 2.5 gen, and "waited" until it was $66k. I may have refused to pay MSRP, but when you look at that math.... I'm still one of the suckers born every minute.

I wonder why more Americans do not buy new vehicles in Canada with the current exchange rates especially if you live close to a border town? Would they cover the warranty?

I did a price comparison (not including sales taxes) using my truck specs but removed the bed mat as for some reason it's not showing as available in Canada right now. Also the US version would have 20 inch wheels versus the 18's in Canada.

    USA MSRP = $61,805

    CDN MSRP = $76,932 with exchange rate @ $1.35 = $56,986 US

Everyone uses their pickups differently. I think it's a mis-characterizaion to say they are "supposed to be work tools". In my neck of the woods, the rancher/farmers all have older 3/4-1 ton flatbeds for work. They drive their new pickups to church or runs into town.

My wife and I are retired and do a lot of traveling. We both hate to fly, so my pickup is our primary means of transportation. Our trips are measured in weeks, not days, so we travel with a lot of "stuff" including 2 large dogs, hence the need for a pickup. We enjoy the creature comforts of the newer trucks, and don't mind paying for them...within reason of course.

I paid MSRP for my 2023 1794. With the upgraded tires and extended warranty, I got out the door for just under $70K. That stung a little. But then, our properties and other assets have all appreciated nicely, so it's all relative. if I was living paycheck to paycheck, there's no way I'd pay that much.

I can not pay that much. If I need a new truck, I am not sure what I will do.

Many rooskis and ukrainians buy destroyed/salvage cars and fix them and drive. You end up seeing slavic church parking lots filled with mercs, bmws and other expensive brands. Perhaps this is the way?

It isn't much of a post, but it was important to add to the statistic.

Their demands are no less unreasonable than the automaker’s demands. It’s a contract negotiation, both sides come to the table with naked self interest. The auto industry has been fabulously profitable the past few years, and the employees who have contributed to those profits now want to have a conversation about how much of that $$$ should head their way. Then there are quality of life issues, work conditions, etc. I can’t speak for the UAW and what auto manufacturing is like right now, but if it’s anything like my industry the workforce is way short staffed, conditions of everything are worse from equipment to work life balance, and we’re all pretty damn tired of it.

And at the end of the day, the Big 3 make more money, the UAW make more money, and the cost to consumers continues to skyrocket.

There is quite a delta, but the price I quoted is apples to apples. The OP truck is a loaded hybrid, and my price is a base non-hybrid, to match the 2007.

Also, the hybrid will save you 400 gallons of gas at 20mpg over 2007's 13mpg if you drive for 15k miles per year. At current prices of $4.30 per gallon at my costco, that's $1600 saved per year.

Ugh, don't get me started on the boat market. The Woman and I have been wanting to buy a bigger, more capable boat and are debating between two types.

Lake boat with prop outboard, something like a Lund 1600 Fury. New, these boats are $45k+. Used, 5 - 10 years old, they're still $30k+.

River boat with a jet powerplant similar a Merc 200 Sport Jet, something like a Harbercraft 1775 Xtreme Duty. New, $80K+. Used, 20 years old in decent shape, $40 - $50K.

Needless to say, we're gonna continue putting around in our 50 year old, 13ft tinner with a 2004 Merc 9.9hp for awhile.

Er.. there is no increase. The Base model of a non-hybrid Limited 4x4 CM is $4000 cheaper than a base model of 2007 Limited 4x4 CM when adjusted for inflation.

At $1600 a year in saved fuel it will take 38 years to recoup my money in fuel savings vs driving my long paid off 2007. Minus whatever maintenance has to be performed.

Anyone tracking on Fla beach condos or mountain cabins? Many diserable ones are 2-3x what they were in early 2020. And they are selling. If you can swing a $1.2M cabin for a vacation home in Gatlinburg or an $750k condo in Panama city with $800 a month condo fee a $75k truck is pocket change

Holy smokes! Where on earth are you eating? Did the waiter crumb your table? Did your table have a table cloth? Did the waiter grind fresh cracked pepper for you? I know dining out has gotten more expensive but in my local restaurant I can get a sandwich and beer for $17-$25 pretax and tip depending on what sandwich and beer I choose. This includes a side choice as well as the illustrious ski town pricing.

as far as new truck prices go I'm out. I buy used trucks with mileage that I'm comfortable with so I can pay cash and not have to cope with the apr or unreasonably high payment options. Last year I paid $21k for my rig with 61,000 miles. Talked the dealer down $4.5k because I always buy anything within the last few days of the month. The sales managers always want to get those sales in before month's close. But each to their own and what they can afford I guess. Money sure does seem unreal though these days. Doesn't matter if it's a $30 French dip or a $78k truck, I'm not paying for either one of those.

This particular kind of weird, where everyone is just waiting to see what is going to happen, is generally when things start to turn. But who knows...

I think we're only beginning to realize the sheer magnitude of money that was printed and pumped into our economy. I read that something like $80B in PPP loans were handed out or forgiven under fraudulent circumstances, in addition to $90-400B* in fraudulent pandemic unemployment payments (at least half of which was taken by foreign entities :eek2:). Plus $80B more potentially pilfered from the SBA program. And all those sweet tiny stimulus checks, lol.

*How's that for an estimate range, lol

A brief look back at the 2008-2013 timeframe shows that during the financial crisis it took sellers 5 years to come to grips with what buyers could or would pay for real estate. The actual price bottom was in 2013, and that’s also when sales started to tick up again.

It took sellers 5 years to accept reality last time, so don’t expect them to come to terms with it in 6 months this time.

I bought my first Tundra in 2008 for roughly $45K. We also bought a condo in a Colorado ski town that same year. Both purchases were just before the market crash. Fast forward to today. A new Tundra costs around $70K. Meanwhile, our condo has more than doubled in value. In that perspective, the price of a new Tundra isn't too bad.

There are levels of smart and dump money. Dumb money or smart more money than god paid $10k over MSRP. Smart money that never pays over MSRP is buying now. Smart money that wants some under MSRP will be buying soon. People smart or dumb who want something for nothing will never buy anything

There are a ton of people with money now who are not interest rate sensitive that will be buying for a good while. Flaming deals are not on the horizon.

Buddy at work just bought a 2023 GMC Elevation 3.0 diesel, pretty much fully loaded by the way he describes it. I wouldn't know what fully loaded is on a GMC, he paid $68k. Truck is nice, I will say that. But $68k, I dont see where that money is at. Yes it has the nicer trim on the doors, pleather on seats/steering, heated seats/steering, in Miami mind you(what a joke), digital A/C controls and the fancy 55" screen and dash. Fancy bullshit double fold tailgate with grab handle and power open. But the kicker is manual passenger seat and manual rear view mirror. All this power crap on what is supposed to be a work truck. We were talking today and he agreed that these tucks aren't going to last the long haul. All this digital dashes and power tailgates and trim-fold gates are garbage in the long haul. It doesn't make the truck cost effective to fix it once it breaks. The new Tundra engine is riddled with sensors, actuators, solenoids, pumps, etc, it's a nightmare. Now they are adding electric motors also. I just saw Ford copy the tailgate of the Honda Ridgeline. Boy did people make fun of that truck.
