So my 2020 CM door jam sticker says "The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed 1220"

That seems every low. What have you had in yours?

That's quite a good number for a half ton truck, no? It is also 120 lbs more than my old midsize wagon has to offer in terms of payload, which totally clarifies the need to purchase a truck ;)

But if it's combined with passengers, you still have to remove 150-200 for yourself, so you are back down to the 1200

My 2016 shows 1240. But they added a down rating sticker reducing that by 153. Assuming the sticker was added when the TSS package was added. So in the end 1087.

Well, the drivetrain, frame, and axles stay the same. So, the more crap you add to the truck, the less payload is left over for,.....well, cargo.
Huge cabs, 4wd, sunroof, heavy seats, extra speakers, "off road" suspensions, yada yada. If you need all that crap and still want a lot of payload left over, you need to bump up to a 3/4 ton.
My half ton Tundra has 1800 payload. If I added all the crap that most Tundras come with/people want and still wanted 1800 payload, I'd have to get a 3/4 ton.

My 2016 extra cab has a 6900 GVWR. The truck consistently weighs 5700 pounds with me, my everyday tools, and an average amount of gas on board.

So, I can still pick up half a ton of gravel with 200 pounds to spare.
