Is it normal to take a few seconds to get up to speed?

I have a 2017 Tundra CM and I just did two trips totalling around 4k miles. When I am getting up to speed or going to pass someone on a single lane highway for example, I notice that it takes a few seconds to really get the speed up there and that the RPM's shoot really high in the process. I do not drive with a lead foot and I am not flooring the gas pedal either. I am new to the Tundra and am curious is this normal or something I should address at the dealership. If anyone else has had this problem, what was your remedy to it?

 

Your truck is really heavy, it's going to take some time to get up to speed. With a gasoline engine, the horsepower is produced at the very upper limits of the RPM range. It's okay to floor the gas pedal when overtaking as long as you're able to maintain control of the vehicle. Very large grins while doing so are also okay.

 

For bigger grins push the tow haul button

 

I refer to the "Tow/Haul" button as the "Tow/Haul Ass" button. You're perfectly fine. The Tundra takes some getting used to if you've been driving a car or smaller (lighter) vehicle. I went from a BMW 5 SERIES to my CM and its was a bit of a shift. I've owned numerous trucks over the years but the Tundra is by far my favorite. If you're not in a rush just enjoy the ride, of you are, Tow Haul Ass and watch everyone else get out of the way.

 

I am new to the Tundra, but I have had trucks of this size before and I am not used to seeing my rpms shoot to 5-6k before the transmission engages. Again I am not flooring it and I am not towing either. I will "experiement" with the tow button. Stay tuned. 8)

Hmm, 5-6k RPM jump does seem excessive. I have always thought my gas pedal was quite touchy as well, I think it is because of the Shim, that was put in there for the stuck accelerator recall. On a new truck, they might have changed the throttle body up a little bit, not sure.

It could also just be that the truck has not yet 'adapted' to the way you drive.

 

It took me a while to get used to the tundra. i have the 5.7, but even so it has always felt heavy imo. i had a chevy 5.3 previously, and while I would never ever go back, it def was lighter and more responsive. also, i've driven the ford 5.4, and it was also super responsive throttle. but i'm happy with my tundra, it's def got it's own character.

 

I tried the tow/haul ass button today and let loose. That said, I didn't notice any difference between having it on or off.

Then you are doing something wrong. It kicks serious butt when engaged on my 17. And it is the same as it was on my 11.

There may be something up. I would mention it at the dealer. I bought my 14' new and at just over 2k miles of being babied my transmission failed. I requested to take the tech for a drive to demo the issue. Right away he said it was probably the transmission. He was right. After climbing the RPM's it would slam into gear, sometimes chirping the tires.

See if you can take a tech for a ride to show him the issue. He (or she) will know right away if it's normal.

 

With the bullydog tuner when I step on the gas it shifts smooth between gears even when I stomp on the gas, no more feeling like the truck floated for a bit searching for a gear then jerk forward. I love it, tow/haul is cool but it does the same jerking motion when you stomp on the gas, always makes my wife give me the crazy eye as it shifts hard.

 

Which unit? I am new to this so forgive the naive questions. The Bullydog BDX or the Bullydog GT Gas? I obviously went to their website. 8)

 

My last truck before the tundra was a 5.4 liter Ford F-150 2wd... the Tundra feels WAY more responsive... my wife describes the Tundra as a hot rod desguised as a pickup...

 

I got the old school 40417 unit, the original system not the fancy new BDX, look into the DAP tune many people are saying that's better than bullydog but I haven't had any experience with it.

 

The tundra is like driving a 1970 GTO with a 455 and a quadrajet 4 barrel carb. Makes a shit ton of noise and then all hell breaks loose as it runs to red line pulling like a jet on take off. It takes some getting used too for sure especially out of a modern vehicle where you expect it to be all kinds of responsive. For me the Tow/Haul Ass button does make it more responsive as far as throttle response and a bit more on the butt-o-meter as well but the transmission is still "Sloppy" in my opinion. To me it shifts like an 89 Ford tempo that's low on transmission fluid when under throttle.

 

Sounds like low transmission fluid or something in the trans that needs repaired/replaced. I'd bring to the dealer and do what MotoTundra did.

 

Doesn't the tow/haul button only remap the shift points - keeps it in gear longer?

 

I think it also changes the throttle tip-in somewhat. The trans programming is pretty tech, it can also detect grade and considers how quickly the driver releases the throttle for downshifting.

 

When you say slam like how badly slam? Like spill your coffee slam or just a little jerk slam? My trucks been acting weird today it kind jerks into gear. 101k 16 5.7.

Like "tranny drop" type slam. The tach would go up pretty high, no forward movement no forward movement, then you could feel it engage and squeal the tires if I didn't let the tach come back down.

It took way too long to shift from 1st to 2nd. I posted video of it somewhere but I can't find it..... I was actually worried it would happen crossing an intersection and I would get t-boned waiting for it to engage.

Did that on a road after it rained... I had to go back home and change my drawers.

As far as I can tell, from goofing around with mine, it increases the gap between shift points on the mid-range gears so it doesn't shift up too soon - this is why it feels like it adds power and throttle response. W/o Beast Mode engaged, I get a bit of a lag when i floor it as the ecu gets out of the way. With Beast Mode on, the acceleration is significantly smoother and faster because the rpms stay up in the 2k-2.5k range even after a downshift.

Even at 105mph the truck keeps egging you to go faster like its bored lol

 

Holy crap that sounds horrible. I'm gonna have my fluid changed hopefully that outs my mind at ease. It happens when I'm going around 30 and let off the gas and push on the gas again I kind feel a jerking motion. I'm hoping it's just me being paranoid. But I sure as hell have not babied my truck so I wouldn't be to surprised I broke something.
