Engine shaking while driving.

I have a 2017 limited 4x4 I’m driving home from work and out of no where the check engine comes on and the truck start to shake especially when I try to give it gas. The truck also was shaking real bad at the red light. I don’t think it was limp mode I was still able to hit 60 to drive the rest of the way home just had to deal with the shaking. Mechanic shops don’t have room to check it this week and it’s my only transportation to work. I don’t want to take it to an auto store worried it will fully break down. Any ideas what it could be.

 

Have the CEL code checked. Any Napa oreilley’s or autozone will typically do it for free. You can usually rent the scanner if you don’t want to drive.

 

I wouldn’t drive mine if it was doing that. Get it checked out before something fails altogether. Is the light solid on or flashing?

 

It’s flashing.

 

Flashing means don’t drive it. It’s the more severe of the two. Park it and have it diagnosed.

 

The flashing CEL can indicate misfires. Check the wires that plug into the coil packs as well as following the harness as far back as you can. Look for evidence of rodents chewing in it as well as fecal droppings. You may have a loose plug or two as well. Might be a coil pack, more than one going bad would be unlikely. Just one cylinder misfiring can be pretty subtle. I'm guessing that you have multiple.

 

First thing run codes for sure. We're the rpms erratic when idling?

 

So I was able to run the code I got p0302. Looked it up it says it’s a miss fire in cylinder 2. What exactly does that mean. I’m assuming spark plugs. I apologize for the ignorance I’m not to knowledge of the terms.

 

How many miles do you have on your spark plugs?

 

That's the cylinder closest to the radiator on the passenger side of the vehicle. Look for any damage to the wiring harness in that area. It could be one bad plug or one bad coil.

 

I was able to run the code and you’re right. I have a miss fire in cylinder 2. Don’t see any chewed cables. Given my truck hit 130k this week I’m sure it’s time to change the plugs. Is it a pain to change them on these trucks? I’ve done them on other trucks but were easily accessible.

 

It's not too bad on these trucks, access can be a little tight for some plugs. You can try some trial and error testing if you want. Swap either two of the coil packs (easier) or two of the plugs. Run the engine to see if the code changes to a different cylinder.

 

My money is on a bad coil. Only buy OEM or Denso. Rock Auto has ‘em for about $50. Local parts stores will be double that. Single 10mm bolt and electrical connector. It’s a 5 min job. Use some boot grease on the rubber boot of the coil. Be careful not to break the electrical connector - it has a little push to disconnect. Also don’t over torque the coil bolt as you don’t want to strip the threads. I’d do this first. If you do replace the plugs use only NGK or Denso. Where are you located. If in SC, I can give you a spare coil.

 

I’d replace the spark plugs first (all), then the coil pack on the effected cylinder. Worn spark plugs can kill coil packs.

 

you could do the spark plugs and try it to see if it is still misfiring. If it is, you can swap a coilpack from a working cylinder and if the misfire moves then you know its the pack. But you should definitely do the plugs for sure because you are 30k overdue

 

I finally was able to find denso spark plugs and changed all 8. Still have the code P0302 popping up. So I swapped the coil closest to the radiator on the passenger side to the one right behind it. Deleted the old code and Scan for the code again and I’m getting the same code.

Do I need to drive it around the block for the code to jump or does it pick it up right away.

 

How did the plugs look?

 

Definitely well worn, but they look pretty consistent. Do you know which one was #2?

 

I set it aside when I pulled it but when I took the picture I grabbed them all and didn’t pay attention. It didn’t look too bad. That darker one came from the driver side. All the other ones seemed about the same.

 

Still shaking / running rough?

 

Yes it still idles hard. I didn’t want to drive it around the block as some one said I shouldnt drive it while the check engine is blinking.

 

The CEL is still blinking with the same misfire code after swapping coil pack and clearing the original code? If so, I’m afraid it may be a valve / valve spring issue. Next step is probably pulling the cover.

So I went ahead and disconnected the second cylinder and I didn’t notice a difference. I disconnect another coil to compare and i could immediately tell the difference. I just have more codes now. Now I’m getting P0302 (pending) P0302(permanent) P0352 and P0354

 

The other codes probably came from removing coils. I bet if you replace the problem coil and reset battery you'll be good
