New member here, but not new to Toyota. I've owned only Toyota's my entire life and currently have a 2000 4runner that I've put way too much work into haha. I love the 4runner, but I'm looking to buy a house soon and hopefully a 2nd kid, so the wheeler needs to go and the family truck is going to replace it. Enough rambling, onto my actual questions.

I'm looking to get a 04-06 4wd Double Cab, but really don't know what to watch out for. From my research, ball joints are horrible like my 4runner, so those will be replaced. Also it's an interference engine, so WP and TB will be replaced if not done recently (90k interval). Besides those two, any real big issues to watch for? I've read about the

I'm not too worried about suspension because it will be replaced for some Fox coilovers and probably AAL until I can afford a full leaf pack (don't tow or haul very often).

Right now I'm interested in a 05 SR5 DC 4wd with some exterior scratches, 161k, clean title 2 owner and needing a TB. Listed for 11k, but I'm thinking I could get it for 9.5. http://monterey.craigslist.org/cto/5113923466.html

    I heard my named called...lol @sean

As for the 1st gens they are not really to bad. 4.7 is a interference engine so make sure the timing belt is done. I do know in the northern states toyota is replacing the frame do to problems. I have hear of the ball joint problem you asked but I haven't experience it myself. Tho mine is stock height. I think that is related to cheap lifts honestly.

Transmission and power (electrical) i have not or not really seen any problems with them. More isolated problems than anything.

Only bad thing can be if the pumps for emissions go out. Vvti engines have it 04 on up. Its been noted on the boards of part shortages. Alot of people toyota is replacing the pumps ($2000 plus repair) there is a simple bypass you can do only takes about 30 mins of your time.

Imo you find a good 1st gen go for it man.

You are correct. if the pumps are not too far gone, they can be cleaned easily if you have a few hours to spare and some basic tools.

Awesome info, thank you so much. Talked with the owner of the ad I linked in the first post and I'm checking it out Thursday. Needs some work (TB and WP) and the interior needs a detail, but otherwise new brakes, battery, all scheduled maintenance and he's flexible with the price. If all goes well I'll be a permanent member here.

So onto the questions haha, I plan on swapping in leather seats, I'm assuming they are drop in if I get the same manual or electric type.

Also does anyone know how hard the MPG drop with a 3" lift and 285 all terrains? Power loss? I'll search when I get to my computer but only on my phone at the time. Will update with my findings as well for comparison.

Passed on the linked Tundra as the interior is beat and my wife made one request for leather. Was looking at this one but he won't budge on his price. We are stuck at 13.3 which I don't know if it's worth it. Thoughts? http://goldcountry.craigslist.org/cto/5116286311.html

Has the timing belt been replaced and how much time is left on the belt? That alone can drop the price on the truck. Depends on the shop it could be 400 up to 1000 plus to replace t-belt and maybe water pump. Hint hint.

I just bought my 05. My bargaining chip was the timing belt was needed repkaced and the passengerside cam seal was puking. Easy to spot, look passenger side engine fornt of the head right under the big pkastic bulge of the timing cover next to the p.s. pump. If theres is substantial oil build up there, its leaking. 1200 dollar job. Do them all the time also water pumps leak drivers side toward the bottom. Gotta get on your hands and knees and look up at it to see it. Check for rust, always a good idea.

As for the power issue after lift and tires, yeah it went down a bit but not enough for me to care. Check my build

Why not take it to the dealer for a look-over? negotiate it off the techs findings...

Thanks for the responses guys. Unfortunately he is 3 hours away and today was the only day I could go see it, but I wasn't going to drive all that way if he won't budge.

It's been dealer maintained its whole life and has the records to show. One owner and timid belt was done at 90k so another 20k (1.5-2 years of driving for me). I like the camper but hate the idea of having to crawl in the back to get stuff and not being able to just throw a bike in. Plus it eliminates the rear rolling window. Id probably swap for a soft topper. Might wait a week and get in touch with him. My wife isn't a fan of the color, even though it's the same color as my current 4Runner...haha

What are your guys thoughts on this one? Bit higher miles and no leather but the TB was done 15k ago and the guy said he would lower the price for me if I came down this weekend. It's about 4.5 hours away though. http://ventura.craigslist.org/cto/5205072098.html

I agree. I just checked KBB and NADA using your info. Good deal. Mike is the resident expert here on first gens. Truck looks in very good condition. I was not surprised to see that the 2006 with 168000 could go for as much as $15K in that condition. (We are talking mostly CA (Ventura)Freeway 101 miles) Buy it!!
AND: It's registered properly. Peace and Love!!

Thanks guys, yeah he seemed to take amazing care of it which is good to know. My wife says no because no leather but that can be swapped out later if needed. Here is the interior. If it had leather I'd be there tomorrow.

Leather isn't was what it's all "cracked" up to be. Leather seat covers are much cheaper than getting a truck that sucks but has leather seats. IMO. I'm sure you will get some info here from other folks on this site where you can come up with some real good leather options.

Yeah it's just nice to have with the kid in the car. I found a guy parting out his tundra that would sell the entire leather and door panels for $900. Not bad at all but I'm not sure if the SR5 is wired for power seats or heated seats.

There is a good chance that the wires/connectors are there. My 07 SR5, has for example, the fog light wires even though I don't have factory fogs. The 2006 you are looking at may be pre wired. You need to check with @Mike . He probably can set you straight on this. It's just me, but that 06 Tundra looks nice. Can't imagine passing it up because of no leather seats. The only thing I like made of leather is my wallet, not much anything else. (and my horse saddles). heh heh

As for your seats having power connection ready so to speak is 50/50 on it. There is extra relays and power required to run those including heated seats. Sometimes it more than just plug and play so to speak but if you have the time its pretty easy man. 12v knowledge is required.

    Example here.
Mine is a 03 (Sr5) I did the conversion from manual to power slider. Tho toyota had power to the factory switch(dash) the wire going back to the slider was MIA. never found it after pulling the back apart to find it.

Just get Katzskin seats if she wants heated.

Side note: I see its in Camarillo. I used to live in Newbury Park. I have plenty of family out there. I'll see them next week. :)

Thanks for the help guys. He said he will do 12k no problem. I like the truck and service history but I could probably find a truck with 140k or less for the same price if I'm patient. I'm not in a rush to buy so it might be better to wait for all the features.

Just talked to the guy and he said he would do $11,500 for me since it doesn't have leather. Found a guy parting his DC out with leather for $900, but could probably get it for $750. Not bad IMO. Might have to pull the trigger.
