Sounds like a possible exhaust leak or something in the transmission pump. Does it change when you’re in gear?

Take a long screw driver or if you have a mechanics stethoscope and touch various parts under the truck to see if you can feel/hear any vibrations/noise coming from the them. Sometimes you can narrow it down to where the noise is originating from.

Kind of sounds like mine. My 22 makes ticking noises when idling in park. You can barley hear it but it’s noticeable when in a drive thru or next to a wall.

I can not hear it when I driving, but I noticed after when I use 4wd, I can hear it. I am thinking about the issue of 4wd, because at before when I shift from 4h to 4l, it has really strong kick in, literally feels like someone kick the truck, but I tried yesterday, the shifting is really smooth… I just send the truck to Toyota dealer, so I will follow it.

Maybe I am thinking about something wrong with 4wd or transmission…

It’s doing fine, still makes the ticking noise. And no I didn’t change the transmission, coming up on about 7k miles.

I have exact same noise when in a drive-thru while idling in drive. If I shift to neutral or park, it goes away.

Are you shifting to 4L while in gear or moving at all?

No, I shift on N and with parking break… might be the issue of transmission. The mechanic of dealer try to figure out what exactly happened.

    Some updates:

At last week, they reprogrammed the transmission, but it doesn’t work, the noise still exists and I also took a video about it.

I sent back my truck to dealership at this Monday, and they try to figure it out that where is the noise coming from, and why it not always shows up. Unfortunately they didn’t figure it out. They already sent the video to the Toyota Canada, Toyota Canada Suggested to check the starter, but the starter is fine so they sent my video to Toyota product engineer, and the dealership still waiting for their reply.

    Update:

The technician put my battery on and the product engineer of Toyota Canada asked them to take a picture of transmission serial number. So I can infer that the factory thinks the noise comes from the transmission. ( Sorry for the late update, because I am in Canada, I have no choice…)

    Another unusual thing is that:

1: when I try to shift from neutral to Drive or Reverse, I can feel the car shakes for one moment. ( it feels not strong but you can definitely feel it.) So I am not sure it is normal or not.

2: something I can hard when I shift to different positions ( like from neutral to drive, or reverse) I can hear a “click” sounds, not loud, but I can recognize it.

    Update 03 Aug, 2023

The sales manager just called me today and he said Toyota Canada decided to change a new transmission for me, but I need to wait around 4 weeks and than I can receive that new transmission…

Excellent news. I wonder if they are going to spend the time to tear down your original transmission to see what is wrong with it and if they would report that back to you?

    Good evening buddy,

the sale manager told me that the factory will bring the old transmission back to factory and check it or do more research about that bad transmission.

they might be not gonna to report me anything, but I will keep asking them.

Hmm. They obviously know the noise is still there. The TC is a seperate part. I’d ask if it was replaced. Other than that I’d put a scope on the rear main bearing area. It’s the one that’s been failing in some engines. When in P or N there’s no load on the bearing so it could make a noise when unloaded.

    Update:

last time someone just asked did they replaced Torque converter, I asked service manager and he told me yes, the TC comes together with transmission.

I came to underneath of the truck and took two videos, it sounds really clear. I given these two videos to service manager at this morning and he will send it to the Toyota Canada. Probably I will got the reply in this week.

Hello! When the 3rd transmission installed, I only heard once, but that one is not that loud compared with before. So I guess the 3rd transmission I installed should be ok, might be somewhere from muffler or something.

Thanks. Mine makes the same exact noise, just bought yesterday. Hoping just something to do with the muffler or one of the several heat shields in that area.
