    In Search Of A Tundra
Hi there. Retired, on the road full time the past dozen years, and in the need to transition from aging motorhome to truck & trailer. In search of something reliable since breaking down in the middle of nowhere is truly unpleasant (ask me how I know). I have decided that a good used 2nd gen Tundra, double cab with moderate miles, preferably white, will suit me best. So here I am.

Anyways, nice place you have here. Lots of good information to peruse as I hunt for my ideal Tundra… or something close that doesn’t give me a stroke when I see the price tag. Thanks for having me.

    Ted

    Welcome.
Not sure about the stroke/heart attack, but 2/2.5 gens can be had for reasonable price, some higher than others.
Others will mention it, but make sure to have it inspected independently if possible (if getting under the truck a tad too hard) and make sure all maintenance is up-to-date or haggle as the prices to budget for future repairs.
If north of the salt belt, check for rust if anything, and some might say stay away from flex fuel trucks.

All in all, you should be happy with what you can find within budget, take care of the truck and it will take care of you and until you lie in the ground....

EDIT: Oh, and cute blackie.... I have one too.....

That’s Kiki, a 3.5-year-old (estimated) adoption from the Humane Society that has been on the road with me for nearly three of those years. Great traveling cat, shy with strangers, loves to take walks on a leash.

Thanks for the tips & encouragement. I’m a Nevada resident, currently campground hosting in New Mexico, will spend the winter from October onward near Yuma, AZ. So car buying can be tricky. Smartphone camera for looking underneath should help but I’m not going to be looking at rust belt Tundras where I am.

No shit..... mine's KiKi, too (well, from the Japanese anime.... but my kids call her all other kind, blackie tend to stick....lol)
Ours was a rescue, too. Found by a dumpster at maybe a week old and was in foster family with other cats and dogs.
I ended up adopting another cat first, but from the same foster family, but I loved black cats so after a weekend (scheduled out of town like months prior) I went back and got her.
    Best decision ever.

So if you are along the I-10, rust shouldn't be an issue, but 3rd party inspection might yield some surprising information you might not have known.
Of course, trust your luck and go with it, that's how most of us roll, too.
Maybe consider Houston/San Antonio area, too? There's quite a healthy group in Texas, too.
Oh, also look up the "Tundras for sale" section, might see something you like and go from there.

Ditto, named after the girl in Kiki’s Delivery Service because of her black cat familiar. That cat was “Jiji” and it means something like “gramps” and it was male, mine’s female, so I didn’t use that name. ;)

    Progress report:

I have one I’m in the process of buying now. A white 2010 5.7 double cab 4X4, 136k miles, $16500. Just got the verbal report back from a mobile inspector I hired—he’s a second time Tundra owner himself and knows all the ins and outs, currently has a 2012 with 280k miles—and aside from cosmetics here and there it’s solid in his opinion. So after I receive the written report w/dozens of photos, if I still feel good about it, I’ll follow through.

Follow-up edit: nope, this was not the one. I’m putting my search on hiatus. I don’t really need to buy this year. Maybe next year.
