The Great HU Install of 2023

Here is a link to the bracket that I used. The rear camera does not come with a bracket, just some 3M double sided tape to stick it somewhere.

I went with black to match the weather seal and the short length (1.0").

 

I noticed the Kenwood doesn't talk to my TPMS sensors but the rest of the ODBII info comes through. Think it might just be a 2016 thing tho

 

Confirmed this morning; this adapter does work to use the factory gps antenna. I have sworn a blood oath to never again take this dash apart to access the stereo until I remove it. Thanks for researching and posting this adapter- I always prefer to keep factory connections when possible

 

I can also confirm that there's 2 (at least in mine) antenna connectors that resemble each other for the GPS and SiriusXM antennas. I had the SXM transmitter plugged in to the white connector (GPS) that went to the left of the dash and it wouldn't work. I about gave up and was going to use the supplied SXM antenna when I finally found the other connector (which is black) nestled among the birds nest of wires to the right of the dash. Hope this helps.

Can’t get my front camera to get me a picture, just a black screen. Worked on the Kenwood HU I just replaced and all I did was swap the yellow video feed to the new plug. Didn’t mess with 12v power to the camera

 

what plug did you use on the back of the alpine?

I tapped the 12v outlet under the HVAC control. Confirmed that has power.

 

what about your ground ?

 

Same source. That 12v out is working fine. I’m stumped.

 

Lol if you double checked power and ground, that is tied to cig outlets….have you cycled key off, removed key and then cycled key on?

 

I don't remember having to activate the front cam input in the settings like you need to do with the backup cam... Let me go poke real quick. Only thing I can think of is maybe a pin is bent where the harness plugs into the HU? Or not seated fully?

If you put the backup cam feed on the front cam input do you get anything? That one might be tough as I think the camera only gets power when in reverse and would trigger the backup camera input…

 

The rest of the story - I had a prior camera (same brand / model) that died. Replaced it but the wiring harness had slightly changed adding a ground. I was somehow able to splice harnesses to make them work on the Kenwood so I don’t have to pull another video cable through the firewall. Maybe the Alpine doesn’t like the wiring situation since it’s custom. Just weird the Kenwood worked fine for 3 years…

 

Can you hook it up around the outside just to test the brand new cable?

 

The rear camera kicking on when swapped proves everything new works. I’m convinced it’s the camera or the mix/match wiring harnesses causing an issue. I’m ready to turn off the front camera option button it up And wait for cooler weather to run a new wire/camera.
