It sounds like two drum sticks hit together. Happens only once also when taking off from a start. Everything is greased. Any thoughts
Reverse is the same one tick and away I go

Could be a u-joint. You try propping up your phone under the truck with the camera rolling to see if you can pinpoint what's clicking?

You're 4WD so the TSB on crossmember failure doesn't apply to you. You're also in NJ, which means rust, have you checked to make sure nothing on the frame is cracked?

Video would help. If you take one, you can drag and drop it into www.imgur.com then copy/paste the URL here for us, it'll show.

There are splines where the front and rear portions of your rear driveshaft mate together. The driveshaft is joined at the center carrier bearing. If you separate the driveshaft there to access the splines and you grease them, I am betting the sound goes away. There is a castle nut that slightly backs off overtime and allows the splines to move very, very slightly but it creates that distinct sound that you have described.

I've had this same issue with a 2003 Tacoma and my 2001 Tundra. It's pretty easy to fix and it just requires some high pressure grease and about 30 minutes of your time.

If you remove this flange via the castle nut, you will see the splines. Take the nut off and tap on the flange with a block of wood or something to remove it. Slop some grease on there and you should be good to go.

If your feeling the extra credit, mind documenting your step by step process either through video or pictures so that any folks with similar issues can just refer to yours in the future?

This is just a guess. But if it seems to tick at same speed 8-10mph its your abs "setting". Does it always happen around 5-10 when first driving or backing? If so its normal. It very well could be whats mentioned above also.

This was it!! Was able to tighten the castle nut about a quarter turn after all was said and done. Thank you so much. After about a year of ticks I’m pulling away silently, well as silently as a gen1 gets anyway. Cheers
