Door Speaker replacement - 2way or 3way?

I haven't been in the speaker game in like 20 years (back when precision power amps and kickers were top of the line). I'm actually looking to upgrade some speakers to the wife's car (2011 hyundai santa fe with inifinity). I've always enjoyed 3 way speakers, but wanted to ask more qualified people the best options. I looked on crutchfield and see some JBL 3 ways for $80 for a pair. I've always previously had pioneers in my old truck. What would be a good option, 2 way, 3way? brands that are good now vs ones to stay away from?

 

Like you, I have been out of the car stereo mod phase for a couple of decades. I am a new Tundra owner (I recently purchased a used 21 SR5 DC) and quickly realized the stock sound system needs help. While I am still researching, I have learned that the door speakers need to be rather shallow in order to fit. So, to answer your question, I'd say get whichever you like most but be sure they will fit before placing the order. Personally, I like 2-ways. Lots of good info in the Tech12Volts forum.

 

More speakers (of different sizes) the better.
Having a dedicated midrange makes a big difference, but i'd be a little wary about a set of 3 ways for $80. You have a link? Most 3 ways are going to cost $500+

This is for the wife's car, I drive it occasionally and want it to sound good, but I'm also the kind of person who listened to pioneer 3 ways in his old ranger for 17 years and thought they were fine. I'm not expecting a THX experience lol. The least amount of "mods" I can do the better. Would rather just replace the speaker with a better one than adding mids, drivers, tweets all over.

I never, and will never spend $500 on a pair of speakers unless they are subs and come in a box with an amp, not cheap, just not going to pay fake prices.

 

Normally when we say "3 way" it referring to 3 way components....meaning 3 separate speakers and passive crossover. They run $500+ and usually come with a 6.5" a 2.5" and 1"/.75"/.5"

What you linked are more refered to as Coax speakers.....more of an "all in one" package. They have their place (rear fill imo). I would think you are better off with a 2-way component over a 3 way coax.

 

Thanks for the verbiage correction. I went ahead and ordered the PowerBass OE-675 replacements for her car for now, I think we'll be upgrading the head unit and some other stuff during christmas time, I'll have plenty of time to research wiring diagrams and all that jazz.

 

How are those PowerBass working out?
