Took the Tundra today for a quick business trip, 217 Miles round trip, 1st leg, running between 65-75MPH showed 19.8MPG (Dash Gauge) all interstate, rolling hills for Eastern Pennsylvania
Now the interesting part. As soon as I started return trip, received emergency call and completed return leg running significantly higher speeds. Traffic cooperated generally pulling out of the way when I was approaching. Fill up just a few minutes ago and mileage divided by fill gallons indicated 21.9MPG. Dash gauge showed 19.9 through 20.3 throughout the run.

This Tundra flat moves out. Tracked very well and completely stable for the run. Impressive for sure. Now if I can get my 2nd FOB and have the Front alignment squared away, I will be one happy camper :)

I'd be happy with those mpgs. On our recent 2300 mile roadtrip, we got 19.1 going and 17.8 coming back. The wind was the primary difference. 80% of our return trip was driving directly into thunderstorms. That was with the wife, 2 large dogs, and a fully loaded bed. The truck ran like a dream.

Thinking this through, most of return trip trans was in 10th gear with RPM's hovering around 2000 RPM with drive mode set to ECO. Speeds well north of 80MPH.

Interesting. I haven't noticed any difference in mpgs in ECO mode, and I don't like how sluggish it makes the truck feel. I use Normal mode about 90% of the time, and Sport mode when I'm feeling froggy.

Aside from better fuel mileage, the biggest difference I enjoy over my 2015 Tundra is the additional range. My 2015 would get 320 miles on a full tank on a good day. My 2023 gets north of 480. That's a third less fill ups, which can save a lot of time on a long trip, if only my wife's bladder wasn't so small. :)

Agree, eco mode throttle response is sluggish at lower speeds. TBH-didn't notice this yesterday. Like you, run normal mode around town and then shift to ECO on Interstate. My total DTE next refill went up to 540 after yesterdays run.

That's nice to hear your mileage is improving. How many miles do you have on your truck? I'm still under 3000 miles and my "Distance to Empty" has never displayed more than around 485.

I don't understand ECO either. Awful throttle feel and no better MPG as you state.
320 on a tank is hard to live with. You start looking for a station at 200 or so vs 300 or so. Really a pain in the ass with a trailer and the lower MPG's.

I stepped up a tire size from factory to 275/60R20, so I suspect that reduced my mileage a little. I'm also wondering if that throws off the DTE calculation. I'm not exactly sure what inputs the computer uses to make the DTE calculation.

I have 275/70-18 tires on mine and I think it had a small impact on the mpg's. Usually the MPG computer on most vehicles is pretty optimistic but I've noticed on mine it's actually unoptimistic (is that a word?) and will generally show a mpg number that is less that what it is when you actually do the math. Seems my sweet spot for mileage is below 70 mph, depending on the headwinds I'll be in the 20-22 mpg range. With the 32 gallon tank I can go a long way, once went 640 miles from Boise to Rawlins Mt on one bag of gas.

I drive back and forth from southern Arizona (4500 feet in elevation) to Phoenix (about 1000), which is about 180 miles one way. I make this trip once or twice a month. Going uphill I get about 19-20 going 75mph on the I-10 (speed limit out here). Going back to Phoenix I can get 21-22.

I'm impressed. It's not as good or as fun as my 392 Challenger, which got 25mpg going 88, but hey, for a brick of a truck it's not too shabby. Just gotta be a patient driver is all... Which is hard for us muscle car guys:rofl:

I got 22.3 mpg on a 4.6 mile in-town trip through stop-and-go traffic yesterday. Go figure.

You're killin' me man. I just traded my 2021 Challenger Scat Pack on my 2023 Tundra and sold my 2012 Tundra. Thinking maybe I should have kept the Scat Pck and the 2012!

Yes The Tundra's a big brick and air pusher. My Roush as long as I stay out of the SC runs 25 MPG. Hit WOT and the damn gas Guage goes backwards almost as fast of the tach revving up. :)

I have the sr model without the front air dam spoiler. Over 65mph the mileage drops substantially. At 55mph it’s around 24mpg. At 75mph it’s just over 20mpg. Thinking the aerodynamics of a moving brick are the culprit.

Non hybrid. I just passed 5900 miles and recently averaged just over 20 for a week of mixed vacation driving. As soon as I return to daily driving in the city though it drops to low 17,s. Still, I’m pretty impressed. It’s a lot better than I got in my 4 runner and not far off my Highlander.

I just returned from a 1200 mile roundtrip from Colorado to Missouri. I'm a little disappointed that the dash display showed I only averaged 16.8 mpg, since it was mostly flat plains driving. I did not calculate actual mileage the old fashioned way.

Does anyone know how the on-board computer calculates mileage? Is the distance based on tire revolutions? If so, wouldn't larger than factory tires result in an incorrect mileage calculation?

When you go bigger tires, the MPH and MPG will be off. Need speedo calibration or find the percentage and added to the hand calculations.

Thanks. My tires are 275/60r20s, so their diameter is only 0.5" more than stock, and their circumference is 3" more than stock . If my math is correct, that means for every mile the odometer shows I'm actually traveling 1.015 miles. Over a 1200 mile trip, that's only 18 additional actual miles. So, my actual fuel mileage was around 17, not 16.8. I'm still not too happy with that.

I've also noticed my "Distance to Empty" after a fill up has gradually dropped from around 475 miles when the truck was brand new to around 460 miles now, with 4K miles on the odometer. That's contrary to many of the reports I've read. Most owners report their mileage improved over the first few thousand miles.

At this point, I'm only getting about 2 mpg more than my 2015 Tundra with the 5.7L. I'm still enjoying my new truck, but so far the mileage is disappointing.

On my fill-up yesterday, third tank since new - I got 22.4 mpg (calculated) on mostly country roads. The computer showed 21.6 but I fill up the same way every time - one click on the pump, wait 30 seconds fill till second click. I have been driving like a grandpa though.

I didn’t spend the money to just swap out stuff.
ECO mode is how manufacturers force idiots that can't control their lead feet into being slower and smoother. Sport mode probably allows for a higher shifting RPM to really bring out that potential power.

ECO should not be used by people who already know to take it easy on the roads knowing the wear and tear and loss of fuel efficiency of frequent accelerations/braking. Having a hybrid motor also helps reduce the wear and tear, especially if you are in bumper to bumper traffic. I have yet to research what the outcome of having a dead hybrid motor and battery would do to normal operations. Would it simply stay in gas motor mode like I am some poor SR5 chump? Who knows until I read on it. Reading is hard.

Oh man, it's hard to go from the 392 exhaust note to the... "Sound" if you can call it that, of the Tundra

Sucks getting older! Apparently back doors and hauling things are more important than engine roars and doing 120!

My DTE reading a week ago or so. Can easily squeeze 600 miles out of a tank if I had to.
