Hello, I’ve had my truck for four years now and every time I’ve gone to fill up I have a max fuel range of 289 miles to empty since my truck only has the 26 gallon tank. This morning I went to fill up and my max fuel mileage say 425. I did notice that the gas light came on at 43 miles when it usually comes on with 20 miles left. Has this happened to anyone? I just did the truck back from the dealership for a water pump replacement

They disconnected the battery or reset the ecu. It will read very high distance to empty but will soon catch up to reality, like it did before the dealer service.

Yup, they almost certainly had the battery disconnected. It will take a couple tanks for the computer to re-learn the normal fuel consumption.

Ok that makes sense since I disconnected the battery to black out my steering wheel. Didn’t know that would happen. Is there anyway of avoiding that since I’m changing my battery tomorrow. Thanks for the help

Nope. It will correct itself soon.

It’s a little too late for tomorrow, but this cable is what you need to avoid it.

One end plugs into your OBD2 port; the other plugs into a 12v power source that will remain hot (I use my jump pack). This will keep all your user settings - radio presets, seat adjustments, fuel consumption data, etc.

Happened to me too. Mine is 15 4WD CM XP 125k on it. We were driving back to Florida from Colorado and somewhere near St. Louis when I shut down for refuel. It never restarted. I used lithium jumpstart to start and drove to Autozone nearby to get a new battery. Before that incident, max range after fill up was always around 300, like 295, 306 something like that and I believed my tank must be somewhere around 20 gallon. But I checked and found it is really 26 a day before. I did not care about it much. Right after battery change and fill up, max range became 400!!! I felt like my truck was cheating me the size of tank all along lol. It started 400 range. Next fill up range got down 360. And after that range is always between 300 and 350. Better than before battery change. I have disconnected battery many times but this never happened. Is my truck living pet or something

As stated already, It will auto correct as your ECU re learns your range. Don't really need to buy anything if you don't want.

Not knocking the advice. In fact I didn't even know that was a work around.

I might be in the minority but I have no use for gas mileage range. The only thing that matters to me is MPGs. I think it is a worthless measurement. Maybe that is because I don't always fill up. I also tow a 5000 lb boat but towing varies a lot from tank to tank.

bingo. consistent MPG tells me my ride is performing in spec - and nothing is wrong. range is a symptom. MPG is the cause.

As a side note, it’s recommended that you don’t let your tank get too close to empty. You should be filling up before you get below a quarter tank

    I wasn’t aware of that, but I don’t have a blower :(
Hopefully that will change one day :spending:

    it's just safer.

our tank is long and shallow.

at half tank, we have used 15gallons. go fill up soon.

I usually refill @ 19 gallons. which is a smidge below the half tank marker.

    and go get a blower.

I have always considered it prudent to fill at about 1/2 a tank. There really is no mechanical reason to fill before your light comes on because there is still plenty of gas left in the tank. Even when the range shows zero, there are about 6 gallons left. Plenty to keep the pump from burning out.

I do half tank also. No rhyme or reason honestly. Just annoying to sit and fill up 31 gallons if I run the tank low. I have plenty of gas stations around me so there’s never a chance of running out. Just habit I guess.

I fill up every week on the way home on the last day I work. That usually puts the needle between 1/2 - 1/4 tank, closer to 1/2.
