I tried several times, had the same issue that you are experiencing. I contacted the dealership directly and got it worked out.

My response from Toyota after submitting on the above link..

Thank you for contacting Toyota and for choosing Toyota for your driving needs. We can confirm receipt of the attached ownership related documents for review.

We appreciate the opportunity to address your refund request for the tonneau cover for your 2023 Toyota Tundra. We are sorry for the delay and request your patience while we prepare for the remedy.

We have checked your Vehicle Identification Number,5TFNA5DB7PX071371, and determined that your 2023 Toyota Tundra is involved in the following Special Service Campaign(s) (SSC), which is outstanding:

Campaign Description: SAFETY RECALL 23TA03 (INTERIM NOTICE 23TB03) - Certain Model Year 2022-2023 Tundra and Tundra HV, Tonneau Cover May Come Off While Driving
    Campaign Status: Remedy Not Available
    Completion Status: Not Completed

Although we are not offering a refund for a tonneau cover at this time, Toyota will mail an interim owner notification to owners of covered vehicles by first class mail. The interim owner notification letter will advise owners the details of this safety recall, that they will receive a future notice once the replacement parts are available, and what to do if they experience this condition in the interim period.

I have the 6.5 foot bed so quad fold. I'm guessing it was an engineering decision to save money. From the tailgate my second panel has no latch. All 6.5 OEM are this was as is the bakflip branded.

Mine was a self installed oem cover about 1 week after I bought the truck.

as seen in a previous post where I posted a photo of my check from dealership.

I found taking the issue up with my selling dealership to be the most effective solution. Toyota brand engagement promised to call me back after some research and never called me back.

I have a double cab with the 6.5 ft bed. Took the cover off before bringing the truck in for oil change at the dealer (Balise Toyota of West Springfield MA). When asked about the recall they just said they are not issuing refunds and I have wait for the replacement. At this point if I get a refund I will probably go with the BAK Revolver as a replacement. Have not had any issues with the cover yet though.

I wrote to Toyota Brand Engagement several days ago, at the link provided earlier in this thread. I just received a reply today and was pleased to discover they will be contacting my dealer to arrange reimbursement for my tonneau cover. Thanks to all the advice in this forum. I'll keep you all updated. My cover was a dealer installed option btw.

Update: My Dealer was very cooperative and I had an appointment yesterday to get the cover removed and received a reimbursement check for the full amount. Part of the problem the dealers are facing is that there is no official campaign for the reimbursements and it's all being handled on a case by case basis at the moment. Now shopping for a good replacement - looking at the BAK Revolver X4S.

Also noticed that Toyota has removed all tonneau cover options on their Build a Toyota site. No longer listed as an available accessory.

My response from Toyota after submitting via the above link...

We're sorry to learn of the tonneau cover concern you are experiencing with your 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid and we appreciate you taking the time to comment us.

We apologize, as we are currently preparing a remedy for our tonneau cover recall. We recommend contacting your local Toyota dealer to address your reimbursement request.

Each Toyota dealer has a customer relations manager to oversee the various operations and address any concern a customer may have. We would like to refer you to the customer relations manager at an authorized Toyota dealer, where they can provide further assistance so your reimbursement request can be addressed.

If you would like us to initiate this contact to a Toyota dealer on your behalf and have a member of the dealer’s management team follow up with you directly, please provide us with the name of the Toyota dealer and your approval by replying to this comment.

I replied to the comment to initiate contact with the dealer, but I don't have high hopes since my service manager already told me No on a refund for the tonneau cover. I'm hoping the contact from Brand Engagement goes higher up to someone at the dealer authorized to make a real decision. :(

That's what worked for me. Dealer service rep initially said no refund. Then Brand Management contacted the Dealer and the Sales Manager reached out to me and arranged the reimbursement.

My OEM (5.5 box) has latches on every fold. I believe the 6.5 box has 1 panel with no latches

After 3 months I finally got my refund check of $1350 for my port install Tonneau cover. I initiated the process with Brand Engagement whom put me in touch with my selling dealers service manager. It was a pain in the ass and I had to check in with each party to hold them accountable. Each party(service manager) and the Toyota case manager was always pointing the finger at each other of them needing something, to move the process along, which created me being the middleman. Joke of an experience, but at least got my $1350 back.

I used my Tonneau cover daily and after 15 months and 20,000 miles it was beat to hell and falling apart.

Personally I think some of you are fretting over nothing. I've self-installed BakFlip tonneau covers on each of my 2 previous Tundras. I put roughly 150K on both trucks. When I traded them in, the tonneau covers still worked perfectly. I saw no reason not to buy and install another BakFlip MX4 on my new 2023 Tundra. My Tundras have all been short beds, however, so every joint on the tonneaus has had a latch. I have no idea why BAK would leave a latch off of their long bed covers.

I also routinely check the thumb screws for tightness, and confirm the latches fully engage every time I close the cover. I don't ever recall driving with the cover folded all the way up and leaning against the cab. I like having a functional rear view mirror, and that configuration always seemed like an accident waiting to happen. I have driven with my cover closed and the tailgate down several times, hauling lumber mostly, with no problems.

I hope you all get the resolve you're hoping for. I'm not going to give my BakFlip tonneau cover a second thought.

    Matt

I ended up getting the BAK Revolver X4S Tonneau cover through Cap & Hitch, along with an AMP Bed Step. Very happy with both.
The Revolver checked all my requirements:
    • Low profile Hard Cover
    • Able to still use the existing Toyota tie down tracks
    • Does not use space within the bed
    • Does not block the rear window when rolled up
    • Within my budget
    • Does NOT detach while driving ;)

For those who received a refund, did it come from the dealer or Toyota Corporate? Brand Engagement approved my refund, then the local dealer filed all the “paperwork “. The dealer said the check would come from Toyota and Brand Engagement didn’t really know who it would come from, but thought it was the dealer.

the dealer said 6-8 weeks (I’m in week 4 now) and Brand Engagement said 2-3 weeks after approval.

lastly, I was at the dealer today and they said everything was processed on 8/2. They did not take my cover though. If I get the check I guess I’m supposed to dispose of the cover myself?

Why in the heck would you dispose of it? Add some lock washers and a little Locktite and you have a free cover.

Oh trust me, I’m not planning on disposing of it if they aren’t going to take it. Today was their opportunity to take it and they did nothing.

In my case, I received the refund check directly from my Dealer. I drove in, they removed the cover and handed me the check. Only took 1 week to complete.

I just reached out to Brand Engagement as well to request a refund. I'm in MN and my dealership is Maplewood Toyota. They've been good so far. We'll see what happens.

Hope the process goes well for you. I went through Burnsville Toyota. It took a few phone calls for brand engagement to get the dealership to work with me. This was back in April 2023.

I'm taking mine in next week to have the cover inspected (per the Service Manager). They will only replace with the new cover if it cannot be fixed with the hardware alone. I'm expecting they will be replacing just the hardware since my cover is in great shape.

What is the update on this? The recall detail in the app used to say “Toyota is currently working on a remedy for this recall”. Now it says “Any authorized Toyota dealer based on an inspection, will repair or replace the tonneau cover FREE OF CHARGE.”

Anyone have details of what is entailed in the “repair”? I thought it was a faulty design?

Looks like they added a bolt to each side and switched up the hardware, eliminating the thumb-nuts.

As Matt2015 said its a hardware kit to replace the thumb nut. If the cover is damaged to the point where it cannot be fixed by replacing the hardware they will replace the cover and install the new hardware. It has to be inspected!

Mine goes in next week for the inspection, its still in great shape so I'm expecting the hardware will be replaced. My Dealership said the fuel line fix won't be available until October / November. Hopefully the second FOB will be in by then and we'll be completely caught up.

Update: The brand manager at the dealership reached out to me a few days after putting in the request, and I eventually had a refund check in hand one month later. I turned in the cover today during a service appointment. Now on to shopping for another cover, which will probably be the BakFlip MX4. I know folks have said the Toyota and BakFlip covers are identical, but I've seen the BakFlip up close on another truck, and there are some minor differences.

I saw the installation video for the Backflip MX4 and it looks identical to the Toyota cover, including the attachment point that toyota is apparently modifying.

Does this mean the MX4 is impacted? I'm sure this has been covered, but I have no idea how to find that information without flipping through every single Tonneau Cover thread here.
