Engine shutoff on highway

Was on my way back to Las Vegas from kanab Utah on the 15 and my truck stalled. The engine light came on as well as an error message about the breaking system telling me to go see a dealer. All power to engine was lost and I couldn’t accelerate. Video enclosed. Don’t mind the swearing I was befuddled. Not even 2k on the odometer.

Ooof. That’s not cool at all. I’ve seen a couple of posts for the 22/23 shutting off in a similar fashion, though they were often a bad bearing and motor. Hopefully yours is as simple as a software glitch or bad sensor. Still doesn’t inspire confidence…

 

Yeah I’ve seen a few posts about it as well. It’s terrifying. This isn’t cool. I’m heading to Toyota tomorrow.

 

We’re you able to restart the truck after turning it off? Or after letting it sit? Or disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes?

Or is dead on the side of the road?

 

That sucks. Hope it's only minor. WAs it ok after you turned it off and on again or did you have to drive out of there in limp mode?

Wouldn't worry about the swearing, I put the sound on and I'd say that was very cool, calm and collected of you. When mine went into limp half of Greenville's morning rush hour could have heard my cussing - not that many of them would have understood it!

 

It started right back up after I shut the thing off. No codes or anything

 

Lol thanks for the kind words. I think I was calm because I’ve seen these posts pop up here but always thought it wouldn’t happen to me. This is a serious issue that Toyota needs to look into

 

This seems to be a "common" trigger case. Engine running into issues when accelerating & trying to pass. It doesn't look like you mashed the pedal like some other folks have done. Interesting that a lot of these issues seem to happen in this same scenario.

This is ridiculous... And makes me angry that we buy brand new very expensive trucks and have to deal with these issues like we bought a used $5k truck with 200k+ miles on it. Please keep us posted

 

Make sure to file a complaint with NHTSA. Without government intervention Toyota will keep denying there is a problem and won't move a finger. Toyota has a long history of ignoring safety problems.

Update: they’re blaming it on my aux beam giving the truck a low voltage reading

 

Surely that isn't an aftermarket add on, which begs the question what are they going to do about it???

No it is an after market add on. It’s my switch panel. I’m gonna take it out and see if it happens again. And pray I don’t die

One of the first questions asked if you start to lemon law a vehicle.

 

If there is any truth to their claims, the sensitivity to the electrical systems on new vehicles is scary. Imagine the electrical load of running a winch on one of these set up for off-road, let alone an auxiliary switch panel.

 

I have been running my Trigger Controller for 20k miles. Never had an issue like this.

Mods that I have that draw from the electrical system:

• 12k Winch
• Trigger Controller
• KG-1000 GMRS Radio
• 12v 15 amp Aux Power panel for my bed

Never once have I had my truck spontaneously die. [Knock on wood]

Of course every situation is unique…but IMO they’re feeding you a giant load of bull$hit because they don’t want to (or can’t) diagnose it.

 

Yup, probably time to find out from an vehicle electrical specialist just what those beams and switch are drawing, there is absolutely no way a properly wired set of kosher lights is drawing enough to kill an electrical system, especially when the vehicle is running. I am going to assume that you didn't pay Jeff Bezos for some Chinese crap that is designed to set fire to the vehicle?

 

I run a mix. I’ve got 2 light bars (Lasfit), 2 amber fogs (Rigid), and 2 Amazon Chinese Ditch lights (wired separately) running through my Trigger Controller.

I monitor my voltage readings in cab with the Trigger Controller. Everything is rock steady, even with the cheap lights.

Edit: I will say though that I’m pretty well versed in electrical. So I know how to wire everything correctly, what gauge of wire to use, what size of fuse to use for the amp draw, ensure everything is soldered & securely spliced, etc.

The only thing I have left to do is make it all look pretty. Probably going to drop everything to a set of bus bars and run those to the battery instead of having it tied into the battery terminals.

Do you have it installed using a wiring harness with a relay?

 

I thought the folks with the wastegate issues had the same problem, engine dies but fires back up w/o codes. Could be mistaken though.
