    understood,

and not saying anyone in particular, but in general, these gen 2 and gen 2.5 guys are just persistent, most of the times, haven't even test drove one, and just because its new, its sucks.

my particular favorite is the the new truck is not even a "real truck", blah blah, well what does that make the older gens that have less payload, less towing, less torque , higher torque peak?

I couldn't even get into my 2016 without dipping well under 1,000 lbs payload, but that was a "real truck", ya ok.

In truth, Im a fan of all tundras, I have owned them all, one of my faves was my 2001 TRD, with TRD Luxury Sport Interior and TRD FJ wheels

Some of this is because old school pickup drivers are maybe a little put off by us later adopters... although I have had one since 1997... who, as you say, see them as a luxe Swiss utility knife. This trend surely has driven the changes we see in this market and the higher end offerings and overall higher prices across all trims. I am old and I can remember way back in the day when pickups were only sold in bare bones work trims and they were half the price of cars. Oh my, how the times have changed.

Just poking some fun into this conversation. Days of 2% interest rates will take some time to come back. I don't recall Toyota offering incentives as often as other brands if rarely. It seems like every two weeks Dodge is offering $11,000 off MSRP but I am sure they jack up their MSRP to cover that. I don't see prices dropping on trucks any time soon, there is just too high demand for them. As long as people are working trucks will sell. All you see on the roads these days is Trucks and SUV's.

All blacked out is starting to become a little overrated and less popular..... I live in a somewhat rural area/very close community of Knoxville. It is however a very very fast growing community and pretty affluent. Pickup trucks in our little area are king. Every high school kid/college kid or younger person in their twenties is driving trucks. It seems like every person is running around in newer HD diesels. They are more of these trucks than any other vehicles.

With that being said, all the blacked out stuff is being replaced quicker than you can blink with chrome. Not as much as the 1990's, but wheels, bumpers, grilles are being replaced with the chrome look.

Wd have about 10 guys where I work in their 20's and all have lifted Cummins, Duramax, Power Strokes. They are all removing their blacked out Fuel wheels and replacing with chrome and putting their stock chrome grills on to replace the aftermarket blacked out ones they bought, haha.

They say blacked out is completely played out and chrome look is coming back.......

There were times Toyota had some nice incentives. Back when I got my 2009 Tacoma in Nov 2008 it was just a couple months after gas prices really spiked and trucks were piling up on the lots. The dealer gave me $5000 off MSRP and Toyota finance had a 0% interest rate incentive. I also got $2000 trade in on a POS... a real POS... 1994 Chevy S10. I was really lucky that time around. But you are correct. It has been common and will be common again for Ford and Ram to routinely offer 5 digits off MSRP. That was normal until the pandemic.

I am not a huge fan of blacked out, either. But body color match looks way better to me than chrome accents. Just my preference...

I've noticed more and more blacked out vehicles lately, especially on grey ones. I don't mind blacked out, but I agree color match is the way to go. Color match > blacked out >>>>> chrome.

    No no no.

    The best pies are cream.

When they’re really well done, about 9 months later they pay further dividends in a lifetime of challenges and rewards.

I’m in no way implying the 3rd Gen isn’t a better truck than my now ancient and outdated 2nd Gen. That’s not my issue at all.

I don’t have an issue with turbo sixers either, although I do have to admit a deep dislike of V6 engines where a glorious inline 6 could fit instead.

That said the 3rd Gen doesn’t offer enough extra anything on paper over my ancient 2007 to motivate me in any way to part with the $$$ to acquire a 3rd Gen. Which to me is a problem, I expected a leap in capabilities and features that we didn’t get after a 15 year wait. Plus the recent release of the Tacoma and Land Cruiser show what Toyota can do when they actually give a rat’s ass about a product line. Those have most of what I could want minus the LC not getting E-KDSS and the TTV6 as options. They’re otherwise excellent in features that I value. So I then look at the Tundra/Sequoia and I can clearly see what products were the results of the “A” team and “B” team at Toyota.

Now Toyota’s “B” team might have come up with a Truck and SUV that are well made compared to the competition, and have some nice features; but they’re still “B” team level products for Toyota. Meanwhile the “A” team is over there making the “B” team look like clowns by designing products that are not only better made than the competition, but are knocking it out of the park on content, features, and innovation.

I feel that the 2nd Gen was an “A” team effort back in its developmental phase prior to the 2007 release, the 3rd Gen was not. That kind of pisses me off.

I understand that for sure, that 07 release was something for timing in the market, it absolutely KICKED fords ass compared to the then 5.4 slug they were running. So in that regard, I get it. I remember those tow tests, etc the 5.7 tundra just walked away from everyone else, it was a total ass kicker for engine performance.

payload, etc, wasnt really all that much more though and there is only so much you can do in a half ton, so I think the 1/2 ton platform has kinda been maxed out, they still came out with the most torque in the market with the hydrid though.

I just don't know what sense it makes to try and get 2000-2500 lbs payload in a crew max half ton or soemthing to reset the market again, it really needs to go up to a 3/4 ton at that point. Nissan tried the heavy half and it was a worthless endeavor and they are now cancelling the titan.

So I guess I don't know what more toyota can do to trounce everyone again, its all WAY more competitive now and the EPA has drowned out a lot of the fun with blown V8s, etc.

anyway, for my cash, after testing them all, the new Gen 3 tundra is hands down the best 1/2 ton on the current market, so we'll agree to disagree with the A-team thing, which is fine, totally cool with that

I would like to have seen the iForceMax returning more diesel like mileage along with the extra power. Plus user reports of mileage for both engines on this forum are pretty abysmal in real world driving.

I am also perplexed and disappointed the Tundra and Sequoia don’t have an option or trim level that offers full time 4X4 like a Land Cruiser, LC Prado, or Tacoma (2024). Toyota has the hardware and it literally bolts right up to the 10 speed already but I guess we can all go fornicate ourselves on that one huh Toyota?

I agree with you on payload and towing, we’ve pretty much reached the reasonable limits of what a 1/2 ton should be doing. I still maintain that Toyota could engineer an excellent 1 Ton, focus like a laser on QDR and towing performance, and there would probably be more buyers for that than the 1/2 ton initially because there’s plenty of Big 3 HD owners who are sick of Big 3 QC issues that would give Toyota a chance.

That has been my gripe as well. Just underwhelming given the time frame and the "out for blood" nature of the 2nd gen's debut. Toyota hardly moved the needle at all regarding payload, and if you look at real world experiences on Fuelly the 3rd gen gets ~3mpg better than the 2nd gen.

The new Tacoma and Land Cruiser have that "out for blood" feature set that tells me Toyota is banking on these vehicles in a way they are not banking on the Tundra. They designed the Taco to protect its market share and the LC to take a pretty huge bite out of Bronco sales.

Point is, Toyota used to offer sufficient rebates/incentives pre covid. since then they have never went back to the old days. on the other hand Ford, Chevy and Ram are going back to the old days.

Look at those prices. The reason I just couldn't justify getting one, especially with the new rates. The new ones cost more than $20k more than my 2020 I got in January with 4100 miles on on it. Truck prices are just insane right now. I know, I know, old prices and rates are in the past but ouch.

Ford Chevy and Ram have more inventory hence the rebates. NO DEALER does a rebate when sales are meeting targets

yes i understand. Toyota use to offer rebates on Tacomas and Tundras pre covid. I really and truly don’t understand why they can’t do the same current day though.

Ford, Chevy and Ram have huge amounts of truck inventory produced that they need to get rid of, Toyota does not. The Chevrolet dealer down the road from me has several new 2022 pickups on the lot.

I'm still gen 2 (2.5, whatever) in a 2020. Took out a loan, only way I could afford it. Did that because I drive them till they die, then keep fixing them when needed, so it amortizes out. I'm 57, and plan on this thing outlasting me. I haven't driven or done anything with a gen 3, because I don't need one. I confess, new looks on vehicles take me a few years to get used to, and I'm just now getting there.

To me, depends on the bits, but generally, a little bit of chrome, then body color>black>chrome. I may try to eventually body color mirrors and bumpers, dunno. Priority is replacing the HU, I want full-range high-quality ear-bleed, not just the sub.

As long as we don't get back to 80s/90s gold chrome and glue-on woodgrain interior, both of which Toyota was king, I'm good.

    :)
